There used to be a thread about interesting documentaries - I searched and couldn't find one in the new site so I thought it would be worth adding unless someone can point me to an existing one. I was just over on Netflix watching some good ones. So far... Dead Famous DNA - really interesting three episode one with a pretty good kicker at the end lol Death By Fire - investigation into an alleged deadly arson in Texas - after the convicted was executed. Russia's Toughest Prisons - we should be more like them with respect to Maximum Security prisons Death and the Civil War - creepy as fuck My Amityville Horror - interesting film and update with Danny who was the eldest son and only about 10 at the time the Lutz's lived at 112 Ocean Avenue The Killer Speaks - interviews with killers themselves or those close to them Death Row Stories - about re-investigating some questionable cases. H.H. Holmes America's First Serial Killer - pretty horrific stuff in the background of the Chicago World's Fair Forgiving Dr. Mengele - one twin survivor's journey and return visit to Auschwitz with a former SS Doctor who also worked at the notorious camp The Jeffrey Dahmer Files - interviews with police and apartment neighbors A Death in St. Augustine - Investigation into a possible murder by a husband who is also a cop Killer Legends - a look at the real origins of several urban legends ========================== That's all I have watched recently - there are a few more that I watched a while ago but this should kick off a thread and possibly interesting discussion Yes, yes I do watch a lot of creepy and macabre stuff - thanks for noticing

Some good ones that are a little less macabre
Mysteries at the Museum - a really fine series from the travel channel about the stories behind obscure objects in history that can be found in museums.
America's Book of Secrets - examines the little known secrets hiding beneath and beyond the scenes in America
Secrets of the Dead: Bugging Hitler's Soldiers - Secrets of the Dead is an interesting history series - this episode deals with the discovery of recordings of German pows in England and what they discussed when they thought no one was listening. Fascinating stuff
History's Mysteries - another great History Channel series
The Devil's Bible - there is a huge medieval tome scribed by hand called The Codex Gigax - it has the largest illustration of Satan in any bible and has incantations and priest's spells and a lot of other interesting things compiled into a single volume. There is no other singular handwritten work that compares to it - who wrote it? That's the question experts try to uncover as well as the history behind such a work - very cool documentary

Secrets The Sphinx - very interesting how they pieced together the clues to best figure out when an who built it.
Ken Burns Civil War - had to re-watch the classic after all this Flag talk

Only one recently I have seen is Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. I would recommend it.

The Bible Rules - a very interesting look at passages in the bible and how they came to be put in the book
World War II From Space - this one really maps out the world conflict in a unique way
Cropsey - starts as a Staten Island urban legend and then evolves into an interesting documentary on a serial child kidnapper and missing children from the island

Carl Panzram The Spirit of Hatred and Vengeance - never heard of this serial psychopath from 1928 before - but it is a very good documentary on his writings
And on the subject of bad men - Josef Fritzl: Story of a Monster - the case of one of the world's worst kidnapping, captivity and incest. This monster kept his own daughter as a sex slave and fathered several children with her over some 20 years

Mystery Files: Hitler - this poses an interesting theory that makes sense as to what really changed Hitler from starving artist to leader of the Nazi regime
Titanic's Final Mystery - well, I'm only a few minutes into this one and it really seems that this expert knows what he's talking about concerning the myth that the ship was poorly made - he's standing next to a piece of the hull in that traveling exhibit of artifacts explaining how well it was made - like a battle ship

Two more I have to mention:
Soaked in Bleach - controversies in the case of Kurt Cobain according to the private eye Courtney Love hired to find Kurt weeks before his death was discovered and the suspicious activities of people close to the situation and, gaps in the official reports.
Kids For Cash - Two Pennsylvania judges involved in a $2,000,000 kickback scandal that sent a large percentage of teenagers to juvenile detention for years over very small infractions. A large amount of the kids parents were persuaded to sign attorney waivers because the judge had a zero tolerance policy and was going to send their kids away anyway. Some of the things 24 year old kids were sent to J.D. for an average of 4 years = having a fight in school, talking back to adults while waiting for the school bus, and possession of a bike this kid's parents bought for him that turned out to be stolen. Quite a few kids were emotionally messed up from the experience of being unjustly incarcerated in their developing years.

I recently watched 'Dark Days', about the homeless community living in shanty towns beneath New York in a disused subway tunnel in the 1990s.
Fascinating and less bleak than might be expected.
Amazingly, one of the homeless characters apparently featured in Deadliest Catch some years later, having moved to the country and become a fisherman. No reference was made to who he was in the show, but somebody watching recognised him and spread the word online. Unfortunately he died a few years later, no older than 35.
Highly recommended. (Dark Days, not Deadliest Catch.)

Front line: Syria's Second Front/Children of Allepo.
Quite an eye opening documentary. The things they have to go through, I don't know if I could do it.

If you want something really heavy to watch I'd suggest Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father if you haven't already seen it. This is one that is best gone into knowing as little about it as possible, so I'll just leave it at "highly recommended".
ETA
I've added The Central Park Five and Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine to my queue. I'll update after I've watched.

There are very few documentaries that actually hold my interest. Here are the one's that I've watched more than once and recommend.
Restrepo and Korengal, both follow The Men of Battle Company 2nd of the 503rd Infantry Regiment 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team. The best war documentaries I've seen in a long time.
The Hornet's Nest, while this one is just as good, it focuses a bit more on the family documenting the war in Afghanistan.
What all three do right, they show just how connected military members become. We do become a family.
Murph the Protector, many know the movie Lone Survivor and Lt. Murphy from that film. This documentary is a great tribute and bio of the man who risked his life to get the call out to save his team.
Indoctrinate U, I love this documentary for what it exposes. I've tried to take college classes and had the same type of teachers/professors try to push their ideals onto me instead of teaching the actual course I signed up.
Expelled, while some would be turned off because it's Ben Stein (his monotone voice puts some to sleep). It does a wonderful job of showing that we've stopped allowing science to continue research because of a theory.
Fat Head, Tom Naughton saw the documentary Supersize Me as a challenge and shows the other side of the coin that Morgan Spurlock made millions on trying to expose the Fast Food industry as the exact reason for the obesity problem.
Metal: A Headbangers Journey, what makes this documentary great is that it really explores the origin of the genre. Unlike Heavy Metal Parking Lot, this was done by a fellow metal head and gives a good explanation of why people are into the music for multiple reasons.
Comic-Con: Episode IV - A Fans Hope, while I'm not a huge Morgan Spurlock fan. This one is good and it does show where the now famous Convention started and what it turned into and the direction it is possibly taking, less about the actual comics and more about the media juggernaut it branched out into.
