I used to be in the camp of people who preferred Goodfellas over Casino but not anymore. Casino is better because it perfectly balances the criminal activities and domestic issues of the Robert De Niro character. Goodfellas isn't that successful. It's disjointed. It's basically a series of anecdotes held together by the narration. Casino feels like it's telling a cohesive story, and an important story too. Goodfellas is just the tales of low-level gangsters who are irrelevant in the big scheme of things. I'm not saying Goodfellas is a bad movie. Don't take this the wrong way. It just doesn't hold a candle to Casino.

It's a series of episodes in the life of Henry Hill. Casino is more focused. It's telling two stories side-by-side in perfect harmony. I also feel Joe Pesci is a lot better in Casino. He doesn't really do anything in Goodfellas. Andy Garcia is more important to Godfather III than Pesci is in Goodfellas and probably got screwed over at the Oscars. In Casino, Pesci feels like a bomb waiting to explode. His character is actually important in that movie.

All Andy Garcia does in Godfather III is hook up with his cousin. That was horribly odd to watch. Pesci is awesome in "Goodfellas", plus the scene at his mother's house is priceless.

Joe Pesci is awesome in Goodfellas but he doesn't have a lot of screentime and he isn't important to the story. Andy Garcia in Godfather III is the catalyst for everything that happens in the story. I think Garcia had the edge over Pesci at the Oscars but lost cause he starred in a disappointing sequel. If Godfather III had lived up to expectations I can almost guarantee Garcia would have won over Pesci. Casino is really where Pesci's impact is felt. He's a major character in that movie and the one that fucks things up for De Niro.

I've seen Godfather III once and I don't remember Garcia being anything special in the film. Then again I forget pretty much the entire movie even though I didn't dislike it, it just didn't have any signature moments. Yeah Pesci isn't important, but he brings a lot to the film and mirrors its energy really well. But his monologue "do I amuse you?" is quoted all the time, no one even remembers anything Garcia does in Part III except hook up with Sofia Coppola.

his monologue "do I amuse you?" is quoted all the time Al Pacino's "every time I pull out they pull me back in" is quoted a lot too, but that's beside the point. That's not Garcia's fault. He's great in the movie. The movie just didn't live up to the other two so people wrote it off.

Yeah, but that doesn't lend to the argument that Garcia was better than Pesci just because he had nothing to work with. Pesci had a better 1990 than Garcia did, I mean the guy got shot in the back of the head AND was hit by full paint cans. The man deserves his praise Neverending!

Joe Pesci had more screentime in Home Alone than Goodfellas, and he had more chemistry with Daniel Stern than Robert De Niro and Ray Liotta. It's possible he won the Oscar for the wrong movie.

I've always wanted to pick up Casino but the blu-ray packaging is stupid. It's one of the older ones that is also an advertisement for the blu-ray format that says NOW IN HIGH DEF BLU-RAY. Blech.

Goodfellas was re-released on Blu-Ray this year for the 25th anniversary. Casino SHOULD be getting a 20th anniversary re-release but if it doesn't happen I'm sure it'll be re-released for the 25th anniversary. From here till 2020 there will probably be a new format. 4K is all the rage now and I've heard that a new version of Blu-Ray is around the corner.

The Departed is better than Casno, but not Goodfellas. Goodfellas is in a class by itself.

Goodfellas is kind of overrated.
Now, before everybody gets on my ass, I still give it 3 1/2 stars. I just don't think it's a masterpiece.

Goodfellas speaks for itself. Casino holds up because it gets better with age.
The Departed....doesn't.
