Goodfellas speaks for itself. Casino holds up because it gets better with age. The Departed....doesn't. Yes it does. |

I've watched them each again within the last two years. I still prefer The Departed. To me, the non-stop style of Goodfellas gets in the way of my investment in everything because the movie never really allows us to sit down and breathe; it's constant noise and camera movements -- more stylishly done, I'll grant you, but it's just exhausting.

The Departed is better than Casino. Why does PG Cooper hate Casino? Did Casino have sex with your mother? Watch the movie again then give us our apology. I agree with Doomsday. The Departed was my favorite movie in 2006 but now it's just Top 10. I think what REALLY hurts The Departed is that absurd ending. I remember watching the movie in theaters and the entire auditorium said a collective "what the fuck?" But everyone was so caught up in the heat of the moment that we all let it slide by. Now, it's tough to swallow. Plus, Jack Nicholson was super over-the-top. His role was almost comical. The Departed is the type of movie that's fun to watch but when you actually think about it it's kind of stupid. |

It also just glosses over some pretty important points like Costello working with the FBI. That could have been a huge point in the movie but it's barely mentioned. It's just a choppy movie that's not nearly as deep or profound as people pretend that it is. The Godfather, Goodfellas, heck throw in Scarface, it doesn't hold a candle to those movies.

If the movie were more exclusively about Costello, then sure, that'd be a problem, but it's not. It's about DiCaprio and Damon, and as such, that twist was handled appropriately. And as to your thoughts on Costello in general, Nicholson's character works because the character is clearly meant to be insane. I like Scarface more than Goodfellas, but I'm a bigger De Palma fan than you guys. I prefer Scarface, too. |

All of your negativity towards The Departed is unwarranted. The movie is excellent. And I don't hate Casino. I quite like the film in fact, but it lives in the shadow of Goodfellas. Been meaning to give it another look though. Also, comparing all these films to Scarface and The Godfather is a bit pointless. They're all crime films, but they're very different from Scorsese's gangster films stylistically.
