Mad Max isn't near the level of Return of the King, but Mad Max at this point absolutely deserves a nomination.

Mad Max is definitely not better than Return of the King. Mad Max is a fun ride and visually stunning, but none of that compares to everything Lord of the Rings accomplished. Even if Return of the King is long or not even the best of the trilogy, it's way better than Mad Max. That's really not even debatable in terms of coming at that from a cinematic standpoint. And I really, really like Mad Max, but come on, it's no contest.

You think Thunderdome is better than Return of the King. At least Thunderdome is logical. If Mel Gibson had giant birds, he would have used them.

Those kids were shit and you know it. And the giant birds weren't? Where the fuck were they during the 10 hours of the LOTR trilogy?

Well, they would have seen the birds flying in. But after the ring was destroyed, it was safe to bring them in.
Heh, I forgot Return of he King won Best Picture.

It won 10 other Oscars that year too. In an alternate universe where Doomsday 's brother was a Reelis host, it had a 0% chance of winning Best Picture.

www.avclub.com/article/fury-road-might-have-been-even-better-mel-gibson-m-231884I made a similar statement back in May, but mine was coming from a different point of view. There's a reason Mel Gibson was a movie star and Tom Hardy, quite frankly, isn't. That's not a criticism towards Hardy. He's a great actor. He just doesn't have the natural charisma and presence that demand global attention. Gibson had it, and had he been in Fury Road, Charlize Theron wouldn't have been the de-facto hero of the story. It would have still been a Mel Gibson movie with Theron in a Rene Russo type role. Some "feminists" may have hated that, but the movie IS called MAD MAX and not Furiosa.

Just watched Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome for the very first time. For a movie I thought was going to be a turd I thought it was pretty good. Sure it's corny and they toned everything down about 5 levels but all that considered it's got some good sequences and fun action. It's certainly no Fury Road or Road Warrior but I probably liked it better than the first Mad Max.
