If Mad Max won Best Picture, could any of us REALLY say that it would be an embarrassment to the Oscar name at this point?

It has a decent shot at getting a District 9 style nomination that goes nowhere, but it's definitely a dark horse and as the heavy hitters come out in the next few months it will look less and less like a possibility. This is shaping up to be a really good year and the Academy probably isn't going to have to think too far outside the box to fill their ballots.

There's Mad Max: Fury Road, Inside Out, Sicario, Steve Jobs, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Revenant, The Hateful Eight and the two or three obligatory Oscar bait films. What am I missing?

Carol, Room, Youth, Joy, Spotlight, Brooklyn, probably a couple of other movies with one word titles, Bridge of Spies, maybe The Martian, Son of Saul, In the Heart of the Sea, The Danish Girl, Trumbo... there are options

Yeah, I'd say RIGHT NOW it's the best film of the year still. But like Dracula has highlighted, the real competition has yet to come.

There are three other films this year that I'd put above Fury Road as of now, but it's still one of the best of the year for sure.

Draculathe real competition has yet to come. Yes, but let's not forget that the Oscars are still doing 10 nominations. That was my point. Mad Max: Fury Road does have a chance of being nominated. The festival season didn't give us any heavyweights. Steve Jobs has received great reviews and lots of press, but that's mostly because of the subject matter. I highly doubt it'll be a major competitor during awards seasons, like The Social Network was 5 years ago. So, really, we're just looking forward to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Revenant, and The Hateful Eight. The Danish Girl and Suffragette might get obligatory Oscar-bait nominations. Spotlight and Truth might get the "big issues" nominations. David O. Russell might continue his streak with Joy. And there might even be room for Trumbo. But... that's about it, I guess. Mad Max: Fury Road, Inside Out, Sicario, Steve Jobs, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Revenant, and The Hateful Eight are the safe bets right now. That's 7 movies. There's room for 3 more movies to make some noise.

Why are you so confident The Force Awakens is a heavy hitter for a Best Picture nominee?

Why are you so confident The Force Awakens is a heavy hitter for a Best Picture nominee? Because if it lives up to the hype, all the Star Wars geek in the Academy will put it the ballot.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has to be Dark Knight good if it wants a chance at winning Best Picture.

When I first read this, my gut reaction was that it was absurd. Even so, immediately after that reaction I realized that Mad Max does deserve a nomination at minimum. It sure as hell deserves an Oscar for Best Picture more than Return of the King.
