Was that beginning shot supposed to be paying homage or something? Looked like stop-motion animation.

The spidery droid with a brain in a bowl is a Bomar monk.  Jabba's Palace is actually a monastery of the Bomar monks of Tatooine which has been taken over.  Like most monks, they are a peaceful bunch, so they didn't put up a fight.  They also didn't leave.  We first saw a Bomar monk in Return of the Jedi, when one frightened Threepio as he and Artoo were being admitted into the palace.

I wouldn't say it's paying homage so much as establishing that they continue to reside in their monastery, regardless of who sits upon the throne of the local underworld.

Neverending tomorrow's the day, do you worst.  If you get a few episodes deep and wonder 'is there a story to any of this?' don't worry, it's not you.

I enjoyed it, but it's clearly got a more serious tone than The Mandalorian.  There weren't any humorous characters to be found the entire episode.  That's not necessarily a bad thing, per se.  I do worry that it may wind up being too dour.  This is supposed to be a Star Wars show, and Star Wars has comic relief characters.  There is likely to be a protocol droid making it's way into Fett's Palace.  I just hope it's not a carbon copy of Threepio.  It doesn't have to be prissy to be funny.

Trivia for anyone who's actually still watching: Danny Trejo's cameo was supposed to be Guillermo del Toro but he was unavailable so Rodriguez had to go to his go-to guy, I believe del Toro was posting Nightmare Alley.

I haven't watched this week's episode yet, but going off what Doomsday said earlier and to paraphrase one of our favorite Spielberg movies: "Where's the plot, Smee?"
