DraculaPG CooperJustinAmy Heckerling wants to know if you can find her work. You should watch the movies Kathryn Bigelow made before The Hurt Locker. I know some people have a hard-on for Near Dark, but the only note-worthy movies on her resume were Point Break and Strange Days. And I'm not pulling a Doomsday here. When she became the first female Oscar winner for Best Director, I devoted an entire month of Netflix's DVD-by-mail service to renting all her movies. They were all awful except for the two produced by former husband James Cameron. And yet... she made The Hurt Locker. She made Zero Dark Thirty. So that brings up the big question that everyone is asking this Oscar season: does Hollywood create opportunities for women and minorities? I'm sure Amy Heckerling can still make great movies, but if no one hires her, how is she supposed to?

I'm a big fan of Strange Days. Bought it recently on DVD actually...though I'm still hoping for a BR.

Point Break is fun in that cheesy Top Gun sort of way, but it's not great cinema. Strange Days is kind of a mess and Near Dark doesn't do a lot for me and I don't think K-19 The Widowmaker has that many defenders. Her post-Hurt Locker work is also a little over-rated, but I do think they're a lot better directed and most of my problems with them has more to do with the writing. It was a little weird when The Hurt Locker came out and suddenly people were coming out of the woodwork to claim she was a master and that her previous work was great even though they were rightly ignoring it before.

I'm a big fan of Strange Days. Strange Days is my favorite Bigelow movie. K-19 The Widowmaker has that many defenders. I'll never forget when Harrison Ford went on Conan and mocked the movie. That may have been the moment when Bigelow set her path on movies like The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. Can you imagine casting Harrison Ford in your movie, back when he was still a box office star, and he trashes your movie in a talk show? This may have also had a negative impact on Ford's career because he hasn't had a hit since that appearance except for Indiana Jones 4. I think most directors turned their back on him after that.

RECOUNT! Academy members are asked to re-vote in disputed Best Picture categories. www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/recount-oscar-voters-today-would-773522BEST PICTURE (1977)
Old Winner: Rocky New Winner: All the President's Men Rocky goes down for the recount; today's Oscar voters give best picture to Alan J. Pakula's Watergate drama, All the President's Men (although Network and Taxi Driver came in a close second and third place, respectively). PG CooperBEST PICTURE (1990)
Old Winner: Driving Miss Daisy New Winner: My Left Foot Good news for Eddie Redmayne: Voters this year are looking favorably upon wheelchair-bound performances. They pick Daniel Day-Lewis' My Left Foot as the best film for 1990, overturning Morgan Freeman's Driving Miss Daisy. DraculaBEST PICTURE (1995)
Old Winner: Forrest Gump New Winner: The Shawshank Redemption If life really is like a box of chocolates, this time Forrest Gump got the crappy coconut-filled piece. The THR recount awards best picture to The Shawshank Redemption. Pulp Fiction came in third, with Quiz Show a distant fourth. JohnBEST PICTURE (1999)
Old Winner: Shakespeare in Love New Winner: Saving Private Ryan All's fair in love and war, but this time war gets to take home the trophy. Steven Spielberg's World War II epic wallops John Madden's Shakespearean rom-com by a margin of more than two-to-one in the recount. IanTheCoolBEST PICTURE (2006)Old Winner: Crash New Winner: Brokeback Mountain The gay cowboy movie was the best picture of 2006 — according to today's Oscar voters — beating Good Night, and Good Luck; Capote; Munich and … that Don Cheadle movie that nobody can remember. The three other nominees were Born on the Fourth of July, Dead Poets Society and Field of Dreams. I know you hate Field of Dreams and think Dead Poets Society is overrated. So that leaves Born on the Fourth of July. Is that what you would have voted for?

These are better choices.
Also, I'm with Dracula. Born on the Fourth of July is way better than anything nominated.

These are better choices. I'm surprised you aren't outraged about All the President's Men. 1976 (or `77 - IanTheCool) is probably the only year where the Best Picture nominees made sense, but giving Best Picture to All the President's Men seems a bit far-fetched. Rocky, Taxi Driver and Network are better movies.

Daniel Day-Lewis' performance is worshipped in acting schools. His performance is indeed excellent. The rest of the film is pretty sub-par.

All the President's Men is still an awesome movie worthy of recognition. Yeah... but it's still the 3rd or 4th best depending on who you ask. It's like giving The Grand Budapest Hotel the Best Picture award even though Birdman, Boyhood and Selma are more deserving. The movie is typical Oscar-bait nonsense and so is Daniel Day-Lewis' performance. Michael Keaton got screwed in 1990 and he's getting screwed again in 2015.

Neverending ...bigging up Field of Dreams? You are on to a hiding, my friend. For whatever reason, despite the subject matter being Baseball that nobody in the UK has a remote affinity for, that film is widely considered a stone cold classic and I've never met anybody in my circle of acquaintances that doesn't love it. It's a classic just for seeing Darth Vader and Mufasa in a live action role and being awesome. Baseball has a magical quality that transcends sport, and that no other sport has managed to replicate. I've no idea why.
