52. When Marnie Was There (Ghibli)Pretty standard non-Miyazaki/Takahata Ghibli movie, but there's some interesting undertones and it taps into a certain teenage yearning pretty effectively.

Is this one of your weirdo anime’s you’ll be unleashing at the Film Club? No. It's not quite good enough. I'll probably keep recommending Angel's Egg though, which is not Ghibli and won't be showing up in this list.

51. Cinderella (Disney)The prototypical Disney Princess movie for better or worse. The story and characters are pretty hollow, but the filmmaking is really solid and oddly suspenseful.

50. Coco (Pixar)About here is the point in the list where I'd call the movies "good". And indeed, I like Coco, but I'm maybe not quite as enthusiastic as everyone else. You need to accept some rather lame writing choices for the story to work and the emotional revelations don't really hate me. On the other hand, it's a really beautiful looking movie that's generally fun to watch.

49. Finding Nemo (Pixar)Probably a movie I respect more than I like. It doesn't really appeal to my sensibilities, but I can appreciate a well-made family. The father-son dynamic is really strong and Thomas Newman's score is excellent.

It's been a while since I last saw Finding Nemo, so I can't definitively say what my thoughts on it are.

48. Lilo and Stitch (Disney)The alien antics are okay, but the movie's greatest charms lie in the dynamics between the sisters and how the film subtlety plays on real issues experienced by Indigenous communities in North America.

47. From Up on Poppy Hill (Ghibli)The teen drama is cute enough, but what really works here is the film's wonderful sense of place.

Lilo and stictch better than Nemo.... He’s a Zoomer. The movie and TV series were a huge part of his childhood.

Lilo and stictch better than Nemo.... He’s a Zoomer. The movie and TV series were a huge part of his childhood. Both Lilo and Sitch and Finding Nemo played pretty similar roles in my childhood. Movies I liked ok then moved on from. I probably had more fondness for Sitch given Nemo came when I was older and a bit more annoyed by "baby movies" but I don't think either was especially important to me. 46. Pinocchio (Disney)Simplistic in characters and theme, but fuck me is this movie weird. Pinocchio comes to life and is just sent off to school, is lured to an island where children are transformed into donkeys used for slave labour (which is never undone or addressed once Pinocchio moves on), and then Pinocchio comes home to a note that's just like "Geppetto was eaten by a whale." Disney movies probably got better with more structure but there is an appeal in the sheer lunacy of Pinocchio.

45. Monsters, Inc.Often lumped in with Pixar's golden age given when it was released. Personally, I think the film is a little more middle-of-the-road than great, but it's an endearing little adventure movie with fun characters and some solid laughs.

Nah, Monsters, Inc. is one of my favorite Pixars. Has one of those endings that always gets me, even just thinking about it.

44. Mulan (Disney)Falters a little in act three but the story is pretty solid otherwise and the film has a handful of standout elements.

I'd probably put it a bit lower, the middle section works but its beginning and ending are kinda meh. Good songs though.

43. Frozen (Disney)The film that really announced Disney Animation was back in fighting form. Personally, I think it fizzles after the first act but that first act is really good.
