42. Atlantis: The Lost Empire (Disney)This movie is neat! It has some cool design elements and the adventure storyline is good fun. I will say the movie loses some points once the characters actually make it to Atlantis but as far as a more action-oriented Disney movie goes, this is pretty good.

41. My Neighbors the Yamadas (Ghibli)Unlike most of his peers at Ghibli, Isao Takahata experimented a lot with basic visual style and My Neighbors the Yamadas is his most brazenly unique. Like a lot of episodic narratives, Yamadas runs out of steam as it goes, but it's distinct visual identity which mixes a simple aesthetic with absurdly ambitious and detailed set-pieces really stands out. Plus there's some funny parts.

40. Only Yesterday (Ghibli)Not Takahata's most visionally inventive work and I'm not crazy about the framing device, but the 60s' set flashbacks to teen youth are really wonderful. Easily Ghibli's best portrait of slice of life adolescence.

I remember liking Atlantis. Frozen I might put a little higher, though.

39. The Great Mouse Detective (Disney)Rumblings of the Renaissance. A very fun movie bursting with energy and far more entertaining than anything Disney had put out in over a decade. Also, Vincent Price plays the villain, so that's awesome.

Oh man, The Great Mouse Detective. One of the staples of my childhood. I think I first saw it as a rental or as a loan on VHS from a friend, but at the time (mid-to-late 90's), it had apparently gone out of print. So, I obsessed over trying to get my own copy, but to no avail. Until Disney finally re-relased it on VHS in 2000 or 2001. It's a movie I still have quite a bit of affection for. And in the boxes of old toys my parents still have, somewhere there are plushes of Basil and Ratigan.
Ratigan's song rules, by the way.

Ratigan's song rules, by the way. Maybe the best scene in the movie. 38. Princess and the Frog (Disney)The script is very messy but as an attempt to recapture that classic Renaissance feel, this is pretty successful. Lots of charming elements, none more so than the villainous Dr. Facilier, who has a great musical number and the phenomenal voice of Keith David.

I still need to see that one, actually. It's good. It's the 38th best Disney/Pixar/Ghibli movie.

37. Big Hero 6 (Disney)Solid boy-oriented Disney adventure, if a bit derivative of the works of Brad Bird. But what gives Big Hero 6 such solid ranking is Baymax. I love that robot.

36. Onward (Pixar)I might get some heat for ranking this so highly, but Onward is a rock solid coming of age movie which has a lot of fun playing with its fantasy elements and its climax is quite exciting. It's not exactly a game changer, but it's good filmmaking and the fact that it's generally seen as low-tier Pixar speaks volumes to high the studio has raised the bar for family entertainment.

I liked Onward just fine. I thought the more character-driven stuff was stronger than the fantasy elements, but still, good movie.

If Onward had come out in 2009, when it was cool to love Pixar, people would have LOVED it.

35. Kiki's Delivery Service (Ghibli)A deceptively breezy Miyazaki effort about a young witch in training which is actually about pursuing your passions and the burnout which comes from a job you love. Doesn't have the special it-factor to propel it to Miyazaki's best work but it's still a very charming movie.

34. Fantasia 2000 (Disney)The live-action segments are ass and not every segment works as perfectly, but the highs are really high. The best part of the film is the Al Hirschfeld love-letter to New York set to "Rhapsody in Blue", which is so wonderful it makes the whole movie worth watching.

33. The Jungle Book (Disney)The movie so good it tricks people into thinking the 60s weren't a low-point in Disney animation. Mowgli kinda sucks, but the rest of the ensemble is on fire. Wonderful supporting cast, dignified villain, and the music is good too. The last film made while Walt was alive and in some ways the last gasp of that classic Disney animation.

32. The Little Mermaid (Disney)Neverending has mentioned that the script here has quite a few drawbacks, but the overall execution really overcomes this. An incredibly confident production that marked a major turning point in Disney that really holds up. The highlight is the music, which is arguably the best of the Renaissance, and the villainous Ursula.

The movie so good it tricks people into thinking the 60s weren't a low-point in Disney animation. What are you talking about? There’s only 3 movies. 101 Dalmatians, which is a bonafide classic, and Sword & Stone and Jungle Book, which have their fans. I’d argue the 1940’s were the lowest point in Walt’s era since WWII and the animator’s strike took its toll on the studio. Neverending has mentioned that the script here has quite a few drawbacks. It’s a “problematic” princess movie but the studio had to take a step back before taking one forward. I don’t think you can come out the gate with Jasmin.
