If you can make it to the ending. Sleeping beauty is a fucking snoozer.
But I had a feeling you were gonna over rate it right into the top ten so at least you surprised me.

But I had a feeling you were gonna over rate it right into the top ten so at least you surprised me. I try to keep it interesting. 24. Lady and the Tramp (Disney)Kinda stunning that the fucking talking dogs movie has one of the better developed love stories in all of Disneydom. The film seems just as concerned with class and suburban elitism as Sirk's All That Heaven Allows (released the same year) and the film is subtly one of the most visually confident entries in Disney's filmography.

23. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney)This movie is a tonal mess and everyone knows it, but consider for a second how amazing it is that a 900 page book has been adapted to a 90-minute movie with essentially four main characters that works as seamlessly as it does. Disney was drunk on hubris when they thought they could bring a novel as dark as Hugo's into their world, but from that hubris we got a gorgeous looking movie with great music and easily the best villain in all Disney. Pretty darn good for a project that was inherently misbegotten.

I've really been meaning to re-watch this. I haven't seen it in I don't know how long.

22. Aladdin (Disney)Similar to Dracula, I have mixed feelings about the Genie and the influence he had on animated movies in America. That said, Aladdin is still an incredibly fun adventure with wonderfully defined characters, an imposing villain, and some awesome set-pieces. Certainly not the deepest of the Disney Renaissance, but for a kid, it might just be the most rewatchable.

21. Castle in the Sky (Ghibli)Of the two Miyazaki movies about wacky castles, this one is definitely my favourite. Some really fun design elements like the robots and the third act at the titular castle is especially great. Also, one of my favourite Ghibli villains. Dude starts as just sort of a calm and corrupt military leader, but you slowly learn what a bastard he is as he gets closer to his goal.

Certainly not the deepest of the Disney Renaissance, but for a kid, it might just be the most rewatchable. Not just for kids. But even when I was one, when all my friends were touting The Lion King, I was Team Aladdin all the way. Sure, it has simplistic themes, but they're very valuable for kids and delivered with a tremendous amount of heart, with some great songs thrown in along the way.
And Genie rules.

20. Toy Story 3 (Pixar)A thematic retread of Toy Story 2 but I can't deny just how well-executed this movie is. The prison-break elements are very strong and lead to some amusing set-pieces, but it's the emotional framing of the story that really puts Toy Story 3 over the moon. There's a reason that a cartoon about talking toys became the most widely acknowledged tear-jerker of 2010 and for audiences that had invested into these characters for years, 3 brought a powerful send off. Or so we thought anyway.

19. Zootopia (Disney)There's a fair amount of eye-rolling stuff here (looking at you Shakira) but this movie really delivers as both a family adventure film and as a surprisingly solid piece of social commentary. The film's alegorical elements are far from perfect but the message here is a lot more sophisticated than what we usually see in kids movies. That it pulls this off while also being a damn good crowd pleaser is pretty impressive.

18. Porco Rosso (Ghibli)Who'd of thought the talking pig movie would be a better anti-war aviation story than The Wind Rises? Indeed, I was shocked not just by how good Porco Rosso was, but how Miyazaki balanced cartoon silliness with a surprisingly mature story. This is deceptively one of the man's most adult movies and it's stylistically very cool. Also there's a talking pig who flies a plane.

17. Toy Story 4 (Pixar)Toy Story 3 may have seemed a perfect ending, but it's fan pleasing finale was also dodging the question of the toys dealing with obsolescence and also prevented Woody from really growing. Enter Toy Story 4, a sequel that no one seemed to really want including myself, but what we got ended up being pretty great. While 3 may have been the ending the fans wanted, 4 is the ending Woody deserved. Beyond that though, it's also just a really fun Toy Story movie with excitement, good jokes, and fun new characters. This past decade may have been an uneven one for Pixar, but Toy Story 4 proved the filmmakers could still tap into that old magic.
