31. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Disney)Not an easy movie to defend in terms of character or narrative but holy hell does it look amazing. This was the first feature-length animated movie made more than 80 years ago and it still looks fantastic. The gems in the cave in particular are just so darn pretty and the more macabre horror-inspired visuals are really darn cool.

Not an easy movie to defend in terms of character or narrative What's that supposed to mean?

Not an easy movie to defend in terms of character or narrative What's that supposed to mean? The story structure is wacky and Snow White is the most bland and boring of protagonists.

Not an easy movie to defend in terms of character or narrative What's that supposed to mean? When you actually watch it the movie is about fifteen minutes of setup and a seven minute conclusion and a whole lot of nothing happening for the rest of the running time. A lot of mildly entertaining antics from the dwarfs that gets old very quickly. The voice acting has also dated very poorly and the protagonist does not have much of a personality even by fairy tale standards.

the most bland and boring of protagonists. the protagonist does not have much of a personality even by fairy tale standards. I'm familiar with that criticism but I think the intent was to have someone to ground the story. The Evil Stepmom is theatrical. The Dwarfs are goofballs. You need someone to react to them and guide the audience along. Like Vicky Vale in Batman.

30. The Cat Returns (Ghibli)Easily my favourite non-Hayao/Isao Studio Ghibli movie, which is kind of shocking. It's definitely a sleight movie and nothing about the animation is particularly exceptional, but it's just so darn charming and fun. The Baron is the star here, but my favourite character is Muta, chubby cat with a love of food and a bit of a grumpy streak. And despite the breezy nature of the story, there is a certain wistfulness to the ending I find oddly stirring.

Which is good because my girlfriend LOVES it so I'll definitely be seeing it again.

29. Toy Story (Pixar)I think this movie has been lapped in basically every way by its sequels which made ranking it here difficult, but it's hard to overlook the massive achievement the film was and what it did for movies. And even if I think the sequels are better, the original Toy Story remains an endearing watch with some rightfully iconic moments.

It's hard to really separate myself from the nostalgia of the first Toy Story, but I will acknowledge the sequels do indeed go deeper with the characters.

28. Moana (Disney)Formulaic? Maybe, but this movie looks beautiful and is also the most purely fun adventure from Disney animation in quite some time. You gotta give it up for a crowd pleaser which works as effortlessly as this.

Easily my favorite non-Pixar animated Disney movie in quite some time.

Moanas a lotta fun I only just watched during the q. Better songs than frozen if you ask me.

Frozen's only true standout is Let It Go. Maybe also Do You Want To Build A Snowman? Moana, on the other hand, has How Far I'll Go, You're Welcome, Shiny, We Know The Way, Where You Are.
Just one of the many ways Moana has Frozen beat, IMO.

27. Inside Out (Pixar)Easily Pixar's most unique and original film of the 2010s. The high concept works wonderfully as metaphor and the film's core message - that it's necessary to express sadness, is an important one for kids and adults. That all said, the high concept creates a distance with Riley that keeps me from fully loving the movie. That and Bing Bong sucks.

26. The Wind Rises (Ghibli)The film isn't quite the complex anti-war text I was expecting from an aviation-obsessed pacifist depicting the life an engineer who made planes for a war effort he found futile. And yet, it still ranks quite highly here. The simple fact is it's a treat to see Miyazaki apply his sensibilities to an ambiguously adult story lacking many of the fantastical elements he's associated with. Perhaps not as thematically rich as I was hoping, but great drama all the same.

25. Sleeping Beauty (Disney)frankyt suggested I'd be overrating this movie and he's probably right. Certainly, the characters here are all kinds of basic and the story isn't much but this movie has style to spare. Disney clearly viewed this as an epic and put a lot of money into animating this thing beautifully. The stained glass-like art style gives the film a lot of flavour, while the villain Maleficent is aesthetically one of the coolest. If nothing else, no other Disney movie ends with a battle against a fire-breathing black dragon and that goes a long way.
