Goblet of Fire has been airing on HBO all month. According to the people of CS!, that's the best Harry Potter movie. So, I decided to re-watch it for the first time in 8 or 9 years, and I don't agree. Prisoner of Azkaban is the best one. Yeah... it has that stupid time-travel stuff, but at least it has a personality. These later years, "darker" Harry Potter movies, all blend into each other. Goblet. Phoenix. Half-Blood Prince. Deathly Hallows. They're all the same shit. It's just Harry Potter being a pussy and letting other people save the day for him. Meh. Prisoner of Azkaban works because it was made in-between Chris Columbus and the other movies, so there was jiggle room for Alfonso Cuaron to have some fun.

I don't always like his work. For instance, I thought Gravity was kind of lame. P.S. IanTheCool

Cuaron is clearly the best director to make a Harry Potter movie, but I can barely see his signature in that movie. If not for his name and the fact that it was a clear improvement over the first two movies I don't think anyone would be holding Azkaban up as the standout.

Cuaron is clearly the best director to make a Harry Potter movie, but I can barely see his signature in that movie. What about the shot during The Whomping Willow scene where Hermione, clinging to a branch, passes by right in front of the camera, a shot Cuaron mirrored in Gravity when Sandra Bullock, still attached to the spinning debris, does the same thing?

On this subject, I made this list earlier in the year, but if you asked me now, I'm pretty sure I'd switch around the top two:

I made the thread where I watched all the Harry Potter movies. I hardly remember any of them but GOF was the best easily hands down no contest not even close.

I made the thread where I watched all the Harry Potter movies. I hardly remember any of them but GOF was the best easily hands down no contest not even close. The movie doesn't even make sense. There's a deadly competition involving teenagers for no reason other than shits and giggles. And you HAVE to do it if you're chosen. What kind of school is this? And when Harry Potter's name shows up, even though he didn't enter his name, people just go along with it even though shady stuff has been going on ever since Harry Potter enrolled at the school. They're too busy worrying about school dances to focus on the villain's lurking in the corner. Then, when the bad guys unleash their attack and Harry Potter is almost killed, a bunch of random ghosts show up to save the day. Come on. Goblet of Fire is bullshit. Prisoner of Azkaban is bad too, but at least it has enough humor and electric filmmaking to make it an enjoyable experience.

I don't remember it all that well, to be honest. It didn't leave much of an impression on me. Then again, none of them did, except for a handful of good scenes.

To me the first two were mired in Chris Columbus nonsense, Azkaban was a problematic transitional films, and then final four films all kind of feel like they were padded out in order to keep the gravy train rolling for three extra books and four extra films. GOF was the sweet spot where they were moving things along while still getting more mature. It's not without some problems of its own, but it was the only HP film that seemed to be firing on all cylinders.

Chris Columbus nonsense? Maybe the second movie. The first Harry Potter created the world, introduced the characters, established the cast & crew, and got John Williams on board. It's like James Bond and Dr. No. It has its flaws but you gotta give it props for being the genesis.

FLASHBACK FRIDAYThe REAL reason why Doomsday joined ComingSoon in 2000. It wasn't to discuss Gladiator. I bet when PhantomKnight and PG Cooper were in Kindergarten, they shit their pants when these photos were released. Jibbs too, but for different reasons. He was in college and ate bad taco's. thebtskink was there and he smelled it.

Meh, I was more interested in X-Men. I didn't start to become "into" Potter until the first movie actually came out, and even when it did I liked LOTR more.

You're not a Benjamin Button like Dracula . There's no way, at 7-years-old, you sat through 3 hours of LOTR and thought it was great. It's a movie about people walking.
