Has no one else seen this yet? Huh, okay. Not even Neverending?
Love and Thunder starts with Thor and the Guardians discovering that the galaxy is being attacked by Gorr the god butcher. Or rather, the gods are. And since the only god we really care about is Thor, I suppose this is a quest for self-preservation. So of course they have to put children in danger to distract us from this. Anyways, the other big part of this movie is that Jane Foster is back, but dying. So to heal herself she takes up the broken hammer (which was preserved on the same piece of ground it fell on,which was pretty neat) and becomes another Thor.
This movie is pretty much a full-on comedy. Possibly even a complete satire. You'll have to decide for yourself. Personally, I felt like Taika Waititi was way too overindulgent here without necessarily being artful about it. Its a very silly movie full of quips and gags, but not necessarily cleverness. Its as though they took this particular aspect of Ragnarok and expounded it by a factor of ten. Personally I found that because so much was shrugged off as goofy in the first half of the film, it was hard to give anything in the second half much credence. Ragnarok had much more balance to it.
The performances and the way they were directed also seemed particularly off. The dialogue didn't seem to flow quite right at times. Chris Hemsworth's performance suffers from much of the same issues as the paragraph above, which Natalie Portman's return as Jane didn't feel very authentic to me.
There were two performances in the movie that worked really well, mind you. First was Russell Crowe, who was hamming it up as Zeus. But the real star of the show is Christian Bale as Gorr, a character that has a good arc and is acted in such a way that he seems frightening and pathetic all at once.
The locations are all very green-screen without really giving a sense of place at any point, which is disappointing. There are emotional stakes with Thor and Jane at some point, and the movies message shines through at the climax, but otherwise this movie didn't work for me that well.
5/10

It wasn't great! Like rainbow vomit. The MCU's first comedy, and not in a good way.

I gotta say I dug it. Everyone I went with liked it as well, and I'm not particularly in love with taika's specific type of zaniness but it mostly hit for me.
Those first ten minutes really make you miss the guardians, and you can really see that ppd production on guardians 3 really fucked this phase right up (seems like we could really get the story going with some more galactic adjacent stories).
And even if it isn't everyone's cup of tea it's quite remarkable that we are watching a pseudo rom com Thor movie in the MCU.
The cameos all hit for me, and very few jokes induced eye rolling. Natalie Portman has by far the worst comedic timing in the movie and it shows but she's respectable enough.
That's a dug it for sure. 7/10

Thor: Love and Thunder(7/7/2022)
As sequel-crazed as Marvel has been, one thing you have to hand to them is that until now they’ve been pretty steadfast about limiting any one superhero to having no more than three solo movies. Iron Man was super-popular but his trilogy ended way back in 2013 and while Robert Downey Jr. still showed up in all sorts of other MCU movies that was indeed the last dedicated Iron Man film. But their stance about that clearly seems to have changed because Thor has, surprisingly, become the first of these characters to land a fourth installment, which is likely the result of a lot of factors. For one, Thor is sort of the last of the original Avengers left standing. I suppose The Incredible Hulk and Hawkeye are still around, but both were determined to be side characters unworthy of their own movies a long time ago. Secondly, Chris Hemsworth has only had sporadic success outside of the world of Marvel and may be more willing to keep the checks coming than some of his former co-stars. But I think the biggest factor is that director Taika Waititi kind of reinvented the Thor series with the character’s third film, the well-received Thor: Ragnarok, and Marvel likely felt that cutting off this new creative golden goose after one movie for arbitrary reasons would be foolish. So Thor has returned for a Waititi helmed fourth installment: Thor: Love and Thunder.
The film picks up some weeks or months after the events of Avengers: Endgame and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has been traveling the universe going on adventures with The Guardians of the Galaxy (who, despite their heavy presence in the film’s advertising, are only in it for all of five minutes). For mostly arbitrary reasons it’s decided by his companions that it’s time for them to part ways and Thor goes following a distress beacon sent by his friend Sif (Jaimie Alexander), who warns him that a malevolent being called Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) has been murdering “Gods” with a magic sword called the Necrosword and may be coming for Asgard next. As such, Thor teleports back to New Asgard where he finds that his former flame Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) has somehow picked up his newly repaired Hammer and has herself become a thunder god. Unbeknownst to him, this is because she has been afflicted with cancer and hoped the hammer would heal this and it’s not entirely clear if it is. This reunion is less than peaceful, however, as he bumps into her in the middle of an attack by Gorr in which he kidnaps several Asgardian children and teleports him to a distant realm. To deal with this Thor, Foster, Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), and Korg (Taika Waititi) must devise a plan to save them.
I should say upfront that I was not expecting greatness from Thor: Love and Thunder. Unlike the last couple of MCU movies (Eternals, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), which seemed to promise some new revelation or development in the whole MCU experiment to be revealed, this one really just advertised itself as providing something of a romp in the style of Thor: Ragnarok. That, to me, is not a good thing. I generally found Thor: Ragnarok’s comedic tone obnoxious, a little bit of Taika Waititi goes a long way. Ultimately that movie was able to strike a decent enough balance between that and more conventional MCU drama and ended up just on the right side of annoying and I liked the movie overall, but it wasn’t an approach I wanted much more of out of the MCU. Sure enough this sequel takes that style and turns the irreverence up even more, which is not what I want but even if it was I don’t think I would be satisfied by what the movie is doing because the movie is shockingly unfunny. Don’t get me wrong there is some stuff here I’d legitimately consider clever and witty in that Taika Waititi way but it didn’t make me laugh much and surprisingly I wasn’t alone in that. The nearly sold out opening day Marvel audience I saw the movie with, who would normally be happy to lap this stuff up, was not really audibly laughing much in the screening even at pretty obvious attempts at humor.
Oddly enough the film’s strongest element is the thing in it that’s not very comedic at all: its villain Gorr the God Butcher. Christian Bale plays Gorr as this lanky gray man covered in strange scars and sharp teeth like a sort of cross between “God of War’s” Kratos and Gollum from Lord of the Rings. Bale feels pretty dedicated to the role but the character also kind of feels like something out of a different movie and the movie rather botches the stakes of his evil plan. We’re told that he’s on a quest to kill off the various Marvel versions of the mythological gods but outside of the Asgardians the MCU has not really set up what role these “gods” play in the universe. My understanding had previously been that the Asgardians were not true gods and were in fact just advanced aliens who early humans mistook for gods, but this movie really seems to think every culture’s deities are like that and what makes them distinct from regular powerful aliens and how they continue to interact with “their people.” Beyond that the movie’s just too busy horsing around to really explore the extent to which Gorr’s vengeance quest may be justified, and if the film really had balls it might have tried to tie that in with the Jane Foster character’s situation and whether or not “the” god was failing her in her time of need.
Really the movie has tonal inconsistencies throughout. It feels like it was written to be a much more straightforward MCU movie and then Waititi came in after the fact feeling obligated to wedge his comedy into it whether that was appropriate for the story of not and there are pretty big swings between irreverence and themes that are actually quite dark. When handled with care this sort of “laughing so that you don’t cry” sort of thing can work but I don’t think that’s really done correctly here at all. Even beyond that the movie has plenty of problems unto itself. The Guardians of the Galaxy are totally wasted in their brief appearance at the beginning of the film for example. I also don’t think that the film’s trip to the land of the gods, complete with an extended bit with Russell Crowe playing a Marvel version of Zeus with a ludicrous Greek accent, kind of went nowhere. There are some striking moments that stand out like an extended fight scene in black and white but whatever stakes would have been in place for that scene have been so undercut by the film’s general goofiness by that point that it feels like a waste. The whole movie kind of feels like a waste really. If it had managed to capture that balance that Thor: Ragnarok managed it could have been pretty fun but I think Waititi got a little high on his own supply and got it into his head that he could just wisecrack his way into everyone’s good graces but maybe he should have put more thought into it. There is enough here to keep it from being a disaster and there have certainly been worse Marvel films but this isn’t the revitalization they needed.

Saw it on Saturday, yet haven't gotten around to getting down my full thoughts. But my personal reaction is that I liked it a hell of a lot, probably just as much as Ragnarok. This feels like even MORE of a Taika Waititi film than Ragnarok was and a lot of people's personal reactions seem like they're gonna come down to how much they like his brand of silly humor. Fortunately for me, I'm 100% aboard his style of storytelling, so I pretty much ate this up. The humor really landed for me, but also, the movie hits its dramatic beats pretty darn strong. Actually, I think Jane's storyline gives this film a certain pathos that Ragnarok was maybe missing, or was just a bit too buried under all the humor. If the first half maybe leans too silly, then the second half finds its tonal footing more, but I enjoyed the hell out of it the whole way through.

Haven't seen the movie yet but I do find of interesting that a tweeted this hot take on a whim back in September and it seems to have come true:
To be clear, I don't outright dislike Taika (though Jojo Rabbit was...not good) and I am going into Thor: Love and Thunder with an open mind, but the critical reaction to this one is interesting and does seem to signal a growing frustration with Taika.

He's probably over-exposed at this point. Between this, Jojo Rabbit, the three TV shows he has on the air currently, his voice work in Lightyear, Free Guy, and several cameo appearances all over the place people are probably getting sick of his schtick. It's probably for the best that Next Goal Wins got delayed again.

Thor: Love and Thunder
Many have come close, but Thor is the first one to reach the four-movie mark in the MCU. We’ve gone from Shakespearean fantasy, to boring romp, and all the way to zany action-comedy. What’s in store for us in movie number four with returning director Taiki Watiti? Well, I would say there’s a strong argument to be made for this being the first comedy of the MCU. But it wasn’t a good one.
What’s the difference between an action movie with non-stop laughs (like say Guardians of the Galaxy) and a downright comedy? That’s something I’ve pondered since seeing this and I would say the difference in this movie is that comedy was in the driver’s seat the whole way. I have no problem with dark jokes that might involve cancer, but there’s a style to it that I didn’t see here. It’s more like they had a mere outline for your average superhero movie, and then went back with layers and layers of gags and jokes. Is Thor being in a love triangle with Mjolnir and Stormbreaker funny? Maybe. Could make a great meme. But it defies logic, even for this ever expanding franchise, for Stormbreaker to get jealous and float into frame. And the movie is littered with jokes that feel wrong, and with many that aren’t even objectively funny.
Then we have what you could call the highlight of the movie: Christian Bale as Gorr the Butcher. Or at least I’d feel more comfortable calling him that if it didn’t feel like he was tricked into this script. I was really excited after the cold opening to this film which could be argued to be the best scene in the movie (besides the November Rain sequence, of course). We have real emotion, the promise of considering what makes a god a God, loss of faith, etc., but it never follows up on this potential. Not even close. But going back to what makes a comedy a comedy, at least in this case they’re consistent. Because what do lots of comedies, especially those of the 80s variety have in common? The “straight man” to the wise crackers is always the villain. The “adult” in the suit that we laugh at for being so serious and managing to think he can outsmart our heroes. I’m being a little unfair because the finale to this movie was very adequate, if not maybe a bit rushed, but leading up to this all I can think of is the scene with Gorr and the children, a scene that promised to be chilling and terrifying, stepped on by the weird kicking-the-alien-head-around joke.
This movie is the perfect embodiment of what I expect non-MCU fans expects an MCU film to be like. Cheap thrills, saccharine emotion, and NON. STOP. JOKES.

I enjoyed it, but only as a Taika Waititi film. It feels more like a parody of a MCU movie, rather than one that's supposed to actually be in it. Like those joke Thor shorts that were made around the time of Civil War. Funny and entertaining, but I never thought they were meant to be canon. This felt like two hours of that. So a decent parody Waititi movie, but not a very good MCU movie.
So this might have been a situation where they just went "You've won awards, people love you, you can do whatever you want". Sometimes that's not a good thing.

I've actually been saying the same about a bunch of stuff that's been popping up recently. Like the musical in Hawkeye and the Avenger-Con in Ms. Marvel. It's like they're doing things from the perspective of people in the MCU having watched the movies, and not of having experienced or learned about the events. I'm not sure how families of those who died in New York would be okay with such a happy, chipper stage play. It would be like having a D-Day or 9/11 musical. The Avenger-Con being akin to something like a Navy Seals-Con.

With the sheer amount of crazy shit that's happened in that world I have my doubts that society would even be moderately recognizable at this point in its history. In the real world we can't even handle a moderate increase in the price of gas without completely freaking out.

Christian Bale is awesome in this. The rest is shockingly bad.
I don't love Waititi, but I did find Ragnarok amusing and even though Jojo Rabbit struck me as fundamentally misguided, it was still made with energy and charm. This on the other hand was a slog. It's one of the most hideously ugly movies Marvel has ever made, the story's a mess, Thor's character feels completely bungled from the interesting places Ragnarok-Endgame took hom, and the movie is completely laugh-free despite essentially being a full-blown comedy. I found most of the movie to be annoying and a waste of time.
Bale did rule though.
