I spent most of yesterday using Letterboxd to write out lists of my top ten favourite movies of every year from 1920 to 2021, along with parallel lists of the most popular movies (as defined by Letterboxd logs) I haven't seen. You might be thinking "Gee Coop, that sounds like a huge waste of time. Why the fuck would you spend your day doing that?" Valid points to be sure, but I thought this might actually make for a fun game for the forum. So here's what I'm thinking; once every week or so I can post a year. We all post both top tens for our favourite movies from that year, and the most popular movies we haven't seen, and then reflect on both our picks and which of the movies that we haven't seen we'd be most interested in watching.
The letterboxding part of it is most easily done on Desktop. Go to the "Films" page to look through year by year. I adjusted by filters to hide short films and television. I also mostly ignored documentaries except where they seemed largely fictitious themselves. Although you guys don't have to be limited to the same parameters I set. It's also easy to flip-flop between showing watched films and hiding watched films.
Anyway, I think this could be a fun way to spark some discussion, not to mention Film Club inspiration. Let's get started with our first year...
1968
My Top Ten:
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey 2. Once Upon a Time in the West 3. Rosemary's Baby 4. Night of the Living Dead 5. Shame 6. Planet of the Apes 7. Kuroneko 8. Hour of the Wolf 9. Targets 10. The Lion in the Winter
Man, what a year. 1967 gets more attention for launching the New Hollywood, but 68 is even better if you're just looking for a bunch of great movies. Sci-fi and horror really thrive here, even Bergman is dipping his toes in the latter. I will say my bottom two picks are at a bit of a distance from the rest of the list. I like both a lot (Targets especially has really grown on me) but they could definitely be replaced. A rewatch of Head could be a game changer.
Ten Most Popular I Haven't Seen
1. Theorem 2. Yellow Submarine 3. if... 4. The Great Silence 5. Stolen Kisses 6. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 7. Death by Hanging 8. Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One 9. Witchfinder General 10. Memories of Underdevelopment
Interesting mix of world cinema and exploitation. We also get the first of many appearances for Pasolini with me as I haven't seen any of his films. I think if... is probably the movie I should see the most, but given what a seminal year 1968 was for horror I think I'm gonna go with Witchfinder General.

I remember doing my Nova awards for sci-fi and getting to 1968 and being reminded that both 2001 and Planet of the Apes came out. I was like, ooo boy.
You should watch Yellow Submarine. It's a lot of fun.

I should rewatch it. I did buy that nice Blu-Ray for my Indiana Jones video all those years ago. Any of this unseen movies really grabbing your attention? I watched The Swimmer on thebtskink's recommendation for Film Club some rounds back and it almost made my top ten. I've also seen The Party. It's very racist. But not entirely without merit.

I think I'm gonna go with Witchfinder General. … … … The Conqueror Worm (dumb title) is a Vincent Price movie about witch hunting. It was released in 1968, same year as Rosemary's Baby and Night of the Living Dead, so I'm curious how dated it is even for 1968. LOL! The title of the movie is actually Witchfinder General which is an awesome title. I don't know where Conqueror Worm came from. Fuck that title. It also has a Wicker Man vibe to it, so it might actually be really good. David Webb! Fucking Jason Bourne is in this movie. Also Margaret Nolan the Bond girl. You know, the one painted in gold during the opening credits of Goldfinger. You know, the one Sean Connery smacks on the ass and says to her "go away. Man talk." The title of the movie is actually Witchfinder General. Witchfinder General is also the name of a metal band. Witchfinder General is also the name of a metal band. Yeah, they named themselves after the movie, like Black Sabbath and Black Sabbath. Spoke too soon. It's a British exploitation film. Supposedly, it's based on a real person, one of Deexan 's relatives I presume. Dude would go around killing random women he thought were witches. Can't speak for the accuracy of the story but the death scenes are brutally realistic. Those poor actresses and stunt people. I hope they got paid well cause that shit was hardcore. That aside, it's an interesting movie. Not good nor bad, just interesting.

Any of this unseen movies really grabbing your attention? High School is on the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die list (currently down to the last 121), but like a lot of Frederick Wiseman docs it's kind of a bitch to find since he self-distributes.

The Conqueror Worm is the name of an Edgar Allen Poe story. AIP distributed it in the United States and was hoping to pass it off as one of Corman's Poe films.

I would definitely recommend Targets. One of the coolest examples of a director making lemonade from his lemons and just going above and beyond.

If anyone wants to catch up with '68 please do so. In the meantime...
1987
My Top Ten
1. Full Metal Jacket 2. RoboCop 3. The Last Emperor 4. Lethal Weapon 5. The Untouchables 6. The Princess Bride 7. Evil Dead II 8. Raising Arizona 9. House of Games 10. Au Revoir les Enfants
My top 3 are pretty firmly locked in. The rest of the list is a bit more uncertain. I definitely like all these movies a lot but there's a lot of 4/5s in here. Could definitely see this getting shaken up with time.
Unseen
1. Dirty Dancing 2. Wings of Desire 3. Where is the Friend's House 4. Maurice 5. Opera 6. The Monster Squad 7. Bad Taste 8. Can't Buy Me Love 9. Babette's Feast 10. Adventures in Babysitting
Maurice is leaving Criterion Channel at the end of May so there's a decent chance that's the movie from this list I'll see first but Wings of Desire is most certainly my most egregious blindspot. Many a friend have insisted I finally check this out and I should probably stop stalling on that.

Gen X nostalgia series I did but ultimately decided to focus on the movies that those people still stand by rather than stuff like Monster Squad which even most of them will admit doesn't hold up.

Guess we'll have to wait for you to do a deep dive into the directorial works of Fred Dekker. You could call it "Stacking the Dekk" I figured I had my testosterone fueled action movies sufficiently covered with RoboCop and Lethal Weapon.

Can't imagine this next year is gonna get a lot of traffic, but I gotta respect the random number generator.
1923
I only did top 5s for 1920-1923.
Top Five
1. Safety Last! 2. Why Worry? 3. La Roue 4. The Ten Commandments 5. A Woman of Paris
Harold Lloyd kicking ass. Bottom 2 are pretty weak here. Ten Commandments starts well but becomes extremely preachy. Woman of Paris...eh, credit to Chaplin for trying something new and stretching himself as a director but this does not light my world like his other silent classics do.
Unseen
1. Our Hospitality 2. The Smiling Madame Beudet 3. The Hunchback of Notre Dame 4. Three Ages 5. The Pilgrim
Two Keatons and a Chaplin here but the standout for me is definitely The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Seems to be one of the most iconic Lon Chaney movies.
