Yup, that's what I've heard it preaches as well. Gotta love Kirk Cameron. "If you want to make God happy, max out your credit card like the three kings did when they got gifts for Jesus!" True story: a few years ago before I got married the Catholic church I got married at made us go on this weekend-long marriage retreat. It was as lame as it sounds but in the middle one of the people putting it on said 'if you want to watch a great, fantastic movie about marriage then you need to watch....' and I thought 'lord no is she going to say some horrible shit like The Blind Side?' And she said '....Kirk Cameron's Fireproof. It's my favorite movie.' I almost started laughing to myself because I knew the exact movie she was talking about, the one where he's a firefighter, his marriage is falling apart and the only person who can help him is good old JC. My wife bought it for my birthday as a gag gift later that year and we watch it on the anniversary of our retreat with beer and wine and just laugh at it because it's so entertainingly dumb. Later on I found out Kevin and Bean in LA had a segment way back when about the movie. They do a good job breaking it down.

PG CooperHOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS (2000)Like every child who grew up in post-1960's America, watching Chuck Jones' cartoon adaptation of Dr. Seuss' The Grinch was a Christmas tradition. So when I heard that Ron Howard was making a live-action movie with Jim Carrey, I had mixed feelings. On one hand, this was back when Jim Carrey was still a respectable actor and comedian, so there was potential for greatness. On the other hand, Ron Howard might fuck this up. And it turned out to be the latter. I absolutely hated this movie when it was released and was SHOCKED when it became the highest grossing movie of 2000. I thought people had lost their minds and hoped they would come to their senses. That was 14 years ago. So... I give up. You guys win. The Grinch is amazing and a classic. Give it all the awards and honors. Whatever. I don't care anymore. But if it makes you feel any better - not that my opinion matters - I get it. The Grinch is funny because "he's us." Ron Howard and Jim Carrey turned him from the angry creature with a small heart into a millennial. That's fine. I guess it's funny. But also understand that it completely destroys the magic of the story. We're not supposed to be The Grinch. The fact that we've become one is a little sad and I'm sure Dr. Seuss and Chuck Jones are rolling in their graves. They warned us about this shit and we ignored them. D+

Been doing some watching of movies I haven't seen yet with an Xmas bent.
Four Christmases - this was solid, has a good amount of physical humor that gets kinda hokey and eye roll inducing but vaughn remains charming as hell with great timing. It's not a masterpiece but it's def one I'll add to the rotation in the future. 25% metacritic is a bit low in my opinion, holiday comedies are rough with critics though.
Surviving christmas - speaking of rough... This one has a 7% on rotten tomatoes. But the user score is in the 80s. And it's not as bad as the reviewers say, affleck plays a millionaire lonely boy who goes back to his childhood home to try to get some existential answers but gandolfini hits him over the head with a shovel and affleck offers them quarter of a million to stay for the holidays. I have a feeling that the incest jokes towards the latter half turned some critics off, but after thrones normalized incest to a degree, i found the jokes hit on this watch. Wouldn't buy it or anything but it's another one I'll stop on if I see it on tnt this week at my parents.
For some newer stuff... Holidate - on netflix, not really an Xmas movie per say, only starts and ends with Xmas but also not a bad rom com for a few hours. The leads have good chemistry and there's a few good jokes sprinkled in. You could do worse with netflix original romcoms.
Happiest season - filmed in the burgh and available on hulu... It's not bad. There's some really funny parts but a weirdly tone def ending that is completely insane and unrealistic really kinda destroys the good will built in the beginning. There's some really weird interplay in the end, and a relationship you think is coming doesn't end up being anything as lessons are learned... Somehow? I think? Really strange ending but does produce some laughs.

BLACK CHRISTMAS (2019)Right before the pandemic, D-list YouTuber PG Cooper got a shot to make a big-time Hollywood movie, a 2nd remake of Canadian classic Black Christmas. The result? Well — let’s just say PG Cooper is lucky that Doomsday didn’t ban him from these forums. The original Black Christmas is a prototypical slasher film. It created early versions of many of the tropes associated with the genre. This remake is really a remake in name only. It’s a Generation Z horror movie about gender politics at college campuses. Yup. You read that correctly. The whole movie is about a disgraced professor and a frat seeking revenge on the woke feminists on campus. But of course, the woke feminists fight back. They ain’t no victims. Overall, I didn’t dislike the movie. It’s good for what it is — and the cast is really good. I like Imogen Poots! But I understand the hate for it. It’s a feminist wet dream with no subtlety whatsoever. People don’t want that right now. But the movie is fine. Give it 10 or 20 years. People will come around. Like they did with Jennifer’s Body.

All I could think of in this movie was how choppy the editing was and how it was obviously cut to shit at the last minute to get a PG-13 because they saw what a dog it was.

To All a Goodnight (1980)It didn’t take long for Black Christmas to get ripped off. But oddly enough, this movie came out early enough in the genre to pioneer a few tropes of its own. So why has it been lost to history? Well, cause it sucks. That’s something PG Cooper missed when he did an entire video essay badmouthing Friday the 13th. That series succeeded, where many others failed, cause it had an it factor that those other movies are missing. This movie came out 5 months before Friday the 13th and has the same exact twist ending. It came out 11 months before Christmas Evil, a notable movie featuring a killer dressed as Santa Claus, a premise it shares with this movie. So why did those succeed and this fail? It’s cause this movie has no personality. It’s paint by numbers. It’s lack of execution. It has no pizazz. It’s ideas lost in a void. Friday the 13th is not high art. It’s not even technically a good movie. But PG Cooper owes it an apology. Merry Christmas

I COME IN PEACE (1990) a.k.a DARK ANGEL“I come in peace —“ “— and go in pieces.” LOL. What a dumb movie. This is less a SnoBorderZero movie and more a 1godzillafan movie. Dolph Lundgren plays a narcotics cop going up against an extraterrestrial drug dealer. It’s a fun concept for a schlocky sci-fi action movie but it takes far too long for the main characters to learn what’s going on. It’d be like if Sarah Connor didn’t learn about Kyle Reese and the Terminator till the 3rd act and most of the movie was just the trials and tribulations of a young waitress. Lundgren spends far too much time fighting red tape instead of a goddamn alien. When it’s good it’s good but when it’s bad, well, that’s most of the movie.

Finally watched Bob Clark's Black Christmas earlier this month and I was amazed at how fucking good it is.
Went in expecting a schlocky, exploitative early slasher and it was anything but. There's an argument to be made that it's superior to Carpenter's Halloween; it certainly is far creepier and has more style to go around (and came out 4 years prior).
The ending is also such a knockout. No wonder their shitty remake attempts since have been so maligned. Bob Clark, what an odd and interesting career that guy had. I'd like to remember him for Black Christmas and not Baby Geniuses.
