HOE! HOE! HOE!25 DAYS OF CHRISTMASDAY ONE: BAD SANTA (2003)I have a confession to make. I am NOT a fan of Bad Santa. I know. I know. I'm a bad person. I just don't like how it goes from a raunchy comedy to a sappy Christmas movie. I'm not saying you can't combine both styles. I'm just not a fan of the way this movie does it. And to think that the Coen Brothers are the executive producers makes me even more disappointed. Bad Santa, in case you haven't seen it, is about Billy Bob Thornton as a mall Santa Claus who ends the Christmas season by stealing money from the stores he works at. He's also a raging alcoholic who curses a lot, has a bad temper, and has sex with random women. It's everything a 12-year-old boy wants in a Christmas comedy. But since the movie also has to appeal to adults, Billy Bob Thornton's character meets a strange fat kid and a slutty bartender who show him the true meaning of Christmas. How sweet. Like I said, everyone and their grandmother thinks Bad Santa is hilarious but I don't agree and I will get coal for Christmas this year. Oh well. D+ says me and not Doomsday

Not a great movie, but a very entertaining one and should hold up pretty well over time.

DoomsdayINVASION U.S.A. (1985)If you watched Red Dawn and thought to yourself, "it can't possibly get worse than this," you were wrong. You were VERY wrong. Invasion U.S.A. is about a Soviet terrorist, with an army of Latin America guerrilla soldiers, showing up on the shores of Miami Beach and causing mass chaos in the middle of the Christmas season. The movie is wall-to-wall action scenes with a paper thin story and almost no character development whatsoever. There's constant explosions and shootouts and carnage. It's like a Michael Bay movie before Michael Bay was a thing. And at the center of it all is good ol' Chuck Norris. His role in the entire movie is to chill at the Everglades by day and kick ass by night. Invasion U.S.A. is the very definition of mindless entertainment and it takes about 40 minutes for it to get REALLY interesting, but that's okay. No one watching this movie is expecting Citizen Kane. B- says DoomsdayHERE'S A TASTE OF INVASION U.S.A, STARRING CHUCK NORRIS

Ya know, this would be a fun one to drink to with family. This movie has Drunk Doomsday written all over it. And it predates Lethal Weapon and Die Hard.

KISS KISS BANG BANG (2005)Remember when Batman and Iron Man made a Christmas film together? Directed by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon screenwriter), Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a noir spoof about a criminal posing as an actor in Los Angeles and getting stuck in a murder investigation with a private eye while also romancing a childhood crush. The movie is mostly forgettable unless you're a fan of quirky comedies, but it is notable for being Robert Downey Jr's first starring role in a major studio film after recovering from drug addiction and being released from prison. And it's safe to say that Downey would have never been a movie star without Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The Robert Downey Jr who received an Academy Award nomination for Chaplin is not the same actor appearing in Hollywood blockbusters during the past 6 years. Downey created a new on-screen persona for this movie and it led to his global success. So just for that, I think the film is worth watching at least once. C+

TRADING PLACES (1983)Most people involved with Trading Places say the movie is based on the works of Mark Twain. Director John Landis (Animal House, The Blues Brothers, Coming to America) is not one of those people. He's usually an honest guy and a straight shooter. So he's the first to admit that the movie is based on one of the early Three Stooges shorts where rich people bet if they can adapt to high society or not. They don't and the short ends with a pie fight. And it's that mentality that made Trading Places a comedy classic. No lessons are learned. No characters "change their ways." The whole movie is a giant middle finger to rich powerful people who take advantage of the disadvantaged. In the movie, two old geezers, played by Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche, get into a nature vs nurture debate and decide to prove it by turning their best employee into a homeless person with a criminal record and then turning a poor Black kid into a millionaire. Those roles are played by Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy. And if you think their switcheroo will give them a new perspective in life, it kinda doesn't. Aykroyd spends the whole time trying to get revenge and Murphy is too nice to go along with the geezers, so they team-up with a prostitute, played by Jamie Lee Curtis and her breasts, to destroy what's left of the geezers' lives. Then the movie ends with the three of them enjoying life at a private beach. 31 years later and this movie is still insanely relevant and a great crowd-pleaser. If you're one of the few people who haven't seen it, now is a great time to watch it. It takes place during the holiday season and it's one of the better movies you can watch in December. A+

RISE OF THE GUARDIANS (2012)This movie, from DreamWorks animation, got lost in the shuffle of the winter movie season in 2012 but it is slowly finding an audience. And I'm glad because it's really good. It's about Jack Frost (Chris Pine) joining forces with holiday mascots to stop The Boogeyman (Jude Law) from letting darkness and negativity take over the world. The concept is a bit sappy and the design of the characters and their world is a bit creepy, but the story is so well-told that it doesn't matter. Plus, the re-interpretation of the holiday mascots are creative. Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin) is portrayed as a general. The Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman) is shown as a no-nonsense worker. The Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) is like the spiritual one in the team. The Sandman is basically the comic relief. And their efforts to save the Earth are filled with good drama, fun action scenes and genuine laughter. Rise of the Guardians offers something for everyone and the whole family can enjoy it together. FRED CLAUS (2007)Remember that movie where Vince Vaughn plays Santa Claus' brother? You don't? I'm not surprised. Everyone ignored it back in 2007. But let me tell ya, it's pretty good, and try not to be a Grinch about me enjoying the movie. Fred Claus is not as silly as it sounds. Even though there's a lot of slapstick comedy and sappy explorations about sibling rivalries and the meaning of Christmas, it's also a very adult movie about family issues. And I don't mean "adult" in a sophisticated way. I mean adult content. I honestly don't think children fully understood what was happening in the story. For example, there's a scene where Vince Vaughn gets an intervention and then throughout the therapy session the focus changes to Santa Claus - played wonderfully by Paul Giamatti - and his wife starts complaining that he's so fat he can't "get it up" anymore. Isn't this supposed to be a kids movie? I'm amazed Fred Claus got a PG rating. It crossed the line many times and that's what I love about it. It has enough Christmas-y stuff to entertain your grandparents, but make no mistake, it's still a Vince Vaughn comedy. A-

A movie called Cancel Christmas came on after Simpsons yesterday and the remote was too far away while I was laying on the couch in full flu mode. It was beyond awful.

FOUR CHRISTMASES (2008)"Isn't it too cold to be wearing that outfit.""Bitch, you just jealous."I'm guessing Vince Vaughn lost a bet because he did back-to-back Christmas movies. This one is about a couple who each have divorced parents so they're forced to visit four houses on Christmas. It's a nice concept for a comedy - and very relatable - but since the movie was directed by Seth Gordon, who has a very uneven track record, Four Christmases ends up being very mediocre. There are scenes and characters that are very amusing and have some substance to them, but overall, it's a very forgettable movie. I would recommend watching this solely for Kristin Chenoweth's cleavage. C
