2016 gave us Doomsday’s favorite movie, Paul Feig’s acclaimed reboot of the Ghostbusters starring Melissa McCarthy. But it also gave us Rogue One. A movie that would lead to the Emmy award winning Mandalorian featuring visual effects by Doomsday. Rogue One brought back to life dead actors and now that seems to be all the rage in Hollywood. It’s a great time to be dead, famous and have a family eager to cash in on your likeness. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is literally just Ghostbusters (1984) but set in Oklahoma, home of dirt farmer Frizzo the Clown, instead of New York City. And it stars children instead of former SNL / SCTV cast members. Although yes, all four original Ghostbusters are predominantly featured — including Harold Ramis. This is all rather lame but the movie surprisedly overcomes all that. It is exactly what the trailer said it is. It’s a throwback to 1980’s Spielbergian films. That’s been another trend in recent years. But this movie actually pulls it off better then the rest. This actually felt like an 80’s movie. It’s very impressive… and touching. I loved the cast and all the emotional beats. Objectively, it’s a really good movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it. And I think you will too. Unless you’re a sour puss like Dracula & PG Cooper. But it is funny that a comedy from the 80’s starring the top comedy stars of its day has failed twice to recapture its magic. How difficult is it to get Ryan Reynolds to do a goddamn Ghostbusters movie? Instead we get feminist Ghostbusters and Spielberg Ghostbusters. And people say Ghostbusters II is “the bad one.” Get the fuck outta here.

Underdeveloped, but enjoyable.

How much screen time do the originals have? Actual roles or just cameos?

I truly think this movie's trailer is one of the most embarrassing trailers I've ever seen.

I truly think this movie's trailer is one of the most embarrassing trailers I've ever seen. You and I have very different definitions of the word 'embarrassing'. The movie itself doesn't look that bad, but the notion of a Force Awakens-style legacy sequel to fucking Ghostbusters of all things is ridiculous. It be like a sequel to Spinal Tap where Nigel Tufnel's grandkids learned that their grandpa used to be a rock god. And yeah, I find the desperate pandering to gen-x nostalgia and reassurance that "don't worry, the stuff you liked in childhood is indeed the most important stuff ever and will be treated with awe and reverence" deeply embarrassing.

How much screen time do the originals have? Actual roles or just cameos? Dan Aykroyd has the most screen time. They give him an exposition dump scene in the 2nd act and a “funny” scene after the climax. Ernie Hudson sets up the sequel in the post credit scene. Yes. There’s a post-credit scene. And Bill Murray & Sigourney Weaver are in the mid-credit scene. Yes. There’s a mid-credit scene. All three of them plus CGI Harold Ramis show up for the climax.

I just read the synopsis on Wikipedia. Holy shit, it really is the first Ghostbusters.

Granted, I don't hold the original Ghostbusters up on a Holy Pedestal of Reverence like a lot of movie fans do, but the idea of a Force Awakens-style legacy sequel to it doesn't perturb me at all. I mean, if the alternative is movies like the 2016 reboot, then sure, go for it.

Eh, they tried doing the irreverent comedy Ghostbusters remake in 2016 and it blew up in their faces. Kind of makes sense this is the next idea on the checklist.

They turned Winston into Nick Fury. Next movie he’ll assemble a new team of Ghostbusters. “Pete Davidson , I’m here to talk to you about the Ghostbusters Initiative.”

Is that the one with the wheelchair guy, the goth chick, and the dude with the soul patch?

She was the best non-OG in the movie.
But she was also the only one developed so...
