You bought the first two in steelbook, not not the third? tsk tsk It's not what you think. I bought the two steelbooks and the Blu-Ray/DVD combo on the same day. Best Buy was selling the two steelbooks for $5 each as an incentive to people buying The Dark Knight Rises. But the steelbook for The Dark Knight Rises was at regular price - and if I recall correctly - more expensive than the regular Blu-Ray/DVD combo. Not having all three movies on steelbook seems silly now but it made sense at the time.

I've decided to take a page out of Wyldstar's playbook with the side displays. I kinda like it. Fills out the shelf nicely.

I like the idea that he is basically preserving all of these films, like a library. But my collection is far more personal. I'm at 179, and its going to be a while before I even reach 200.

Nice shelves. Half-Price Books has another warehouse sale this weekend, so my collection just got another big infusion of titles. My new project is going to have to be consolidating a lot of these big box sets into small, more efficiently stored box sets.

Lots of Criterion,, but that was to be expected. I see you have organized by director, interesting. I don't approve of mixing the DVDs and Blurays, but we've discussed that before.
Would you consider taking the individual films out of the box sets, like the Kubrick one for example?

Would you consider taking the individual films out of the box sets, like the Kubrick one for example? The Kubrick one is the only one that would really make sense for, firstly because it's a cheap cardboard box and secondly because that's just a really unpleasent section and I hope to soon make it a non-issue through Blu-grading but it's tricky because Warner is constanly re-issuing that shit and it makes it hard to buy with confidence. The one real problem is that one of the discs in it is the Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures Documentary (which has its own plastic case) and it feels just wrong to have what is essentially a bonus feature taking up an individual slot on the shelf. Other sets just won't separate like the Hitchcock one which basically has pages that the discs slip into or the America Lost and Found (which I awkwardly have filed under "R" for Rafelson even though he only directed 3 of the 5 movies in it) have individual cardboard cases which fold out and don't really close and there's also a booklet in there. That said there are other boxed sets in there which I have separated out. For instance, I bought the Bourne movies as part of a boxed set and because they were all basically just the retail discs put in a box I had zero hesitation trashing the box and just putting the discs on the shelf. Ditto the Mission Impossible movies, and ditto for a Coen Brothers boxed set I had. Also if you look close you'll see I have a Charlie Chaplin boxed set (upper right of the second close up picture) which I have facing spine side out and I'm replacing the DVDs in it with BRs as Criterion releases them.

I have the limited edition Kubrick Blu-Ray which has everything from Spartacus on. It's served me pretty well. The transfer of Spartacus is said to be mediocre so I'll probably update that, but have been satisfied with everything else. Anyway, you've got one hell of a collection. I like that you organize by director. I probably would too but stuff like the Alien Anthology Blu-Ray set makes that difficult.

I've started watching, it looks good.

I avoid getting box sets whenever possible, and when I do its because I either have no choice (Star Wars, i mean I have to have Star Wars) or I can easily separate the individual movies/seasons (like LOTR or the Wire).

I had the Alien Anthology back in the DVD days, always a pain in the ass to file given that it had four different directors and that three of them were pretty major figures in my collection. I usually just filed it under J for Jeunet as a sort of compromise rather than break up some of the other ones. For Blu-Ray I just bought them separately so I wouldn't have Alien Resurrection sullying my collection and because I would be holding onto the DVD boxed set so I'd still technically have all the extra bonus features.

Drac, I noticed you only own the first two X-Men films. Would you consider adding First Class and Days of Future Past to the mix?

PG, what is your avatar supposed to be? Serj Tankian, the lead singer for System of a Down, eating Chop Suey in the video for the band's song "Chop Suey". The phrase "When angels deserve to die" comes from the song.
