I've got a Criterion only shelf. I haven't quite decided how to organize it, spine number doesn't make much sense because the directors are all spread out but it's also kinda tough organizing by filmmaker because there are so many one-offs. If you guys have suggestions I'm all ears. Just put them where it feels right. Colour-code that shit if you have to.

Since I just got a whole slew of Criterion Blus....why do those cases need to be slightly thicker than regular Blu Ray cases? So far, when I've put those on my shelves (I have one of those shelves made up of separate spaces where you can fit 15-20 Blu Rays in each space), I've had to clear room by shifting down two Blu Rays instead of one, which is what I typically do for a regular-sized case. It has to be two to fit in a Criterion, otherwise they get packed in incredibly tight.
I want to keep things simple. I want to only have to move down one Blu Ray per space when I add a new addition to the shelves. Recently, I've been going through and taking out ones I can do without/don't like anymore as a way to make more room, but I think I've used up all those expendable titles.
So I guess my fix would be making Criterion cases regular-sized. Like, when the time comes to put Do The Right Thing on my shelf, that's going to be a pain. That's the first Criterion I'd put in slimmer packaging.
Okay, first I want to say that I love the passion about minute details. This is exactly what I'm looking for. I actually like the extra thickness of the Criterions though. I find the varying heights are much more visually offensive.
I get what you are saying about the shelf-shifting though. Again, love the nitpicking.
To expand on this particular nitpick:
This past Friday night, I re-watched The Game, which is one of the Criterions I got in the past month. Afterwards, I went to put it on my shelf, but the particular sub-shelf it was to go on already (somehow, I don't know how) had enough room to fit it on without shifting anything down. Great. Simple enough. However...the sub-shelf before it has the Criterion of Election as next in line to get shifted down whenever I add the next Blu Ray that'll go somewhere before it. Which will be soon, since I have quite a few waiting to be added. And where The Game is, it's second in line to be shifted off of its current sub-shelf. So when Election inevitably gets moved down, that's going to require moving The Game and the movie after it -- Game Night -- down, but thereby create an imbalance on that shelf. Unless I add Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind to The Game's shelf and THEN add something that'll require Election to shift down...
This is the game of Chess I sometimes have to play in shelving Blu Rays.

Its annoying when a film trilogy/series gets broken up between shelves. But thems the breaks.

"I got a Criterion-only shelf," is a sure-fire sentence into any girl's pants.

Bluray collectors, help! How much of an upgrade is the collectors edition blu of The Thing (with kurt russell pointing his flamethrower) compared to the older release with just the exploding snowsuit on the cover?

The shout factory version is the version I have and it looks pretty darn great. Haven't looked at the older blu so I don't know how substantial a glow-up it is though.

— — — — 31 DAYS OF HALLOWEENLET'S TALK BLU-RAY'STHE THING (1982)I spent like 6 hours going through this blu-ray the other day. There's new special features plus ones from the 90's DVD. It's a bit repetitive but still nice to have. The 2K transfer is fantastic. Although I'm not as picky as Dracula so I can't say it has the full seal of approval. The movie holds up pretty well. It's a bit of a slow burn but the great moments are still great. Now here's the part that stood out to me. Since the special features are a mixture of old and new stuff, you're able to compare the various film qualities. There's the original theatrical trailer in all its 1982 glory. There's TV spots in their... betamax quality? I think that was still the industry standard at the time. In the 90's documentary, you see clips from the DVD. The main difference in all four is the lighting. The trailer and the DVD clips are really dark. There are scenes where you barely see what's going on. The TV spots and the 2K blu-ray are bright. Even in nighttime scenes and low-light interiors you can see every detail. I thought that was very interesting. From what I saw, there's no feature on the 2K restoration, but it's possible the details are included in the commentary tracks. ARMY OF DARKNESS (1992)This blu-ray features FOUR versions of the movie: theatrical, director's cut, international and the TV version. I don't have time to watch all four before Halloween and I don't think I need to. I watched the director's cut. The only difference from the theatrical version is that sex scene, which is in the TV version so you've probably seen it already, and the original ending. Also, I think some shots linger a bit longer. The movie felt slower than I remember. Then again, I'm probably just thinking of the TV version. I've seen that one more than the theatrical cut. The special features are pretty standard. I'm assuming the past DVD's and Blu-Ray's didn't have much features cause there isn't too many old stuff here. Most of it is brand new. They even manage to plug Ash vs Evil Dead on Starz. The one thing that stood out is the clips from the theatrical version. The colors seem very... artificial. It's possible they may have tampered with it. I'm gonna have to watch the theatrical version and see what's going on. The director's cut has the natural looking colors you associate with the movie. It also doesn't have that new-looking quality that come with most blu-rays. It has that 90's film quality. It's possible they just cleaned it up and upgraded it to 2K, but didn't do a restoration. To me it's fine. I can live with both. The Indiana Jones blu-ray is a great example. Temple of Doom and Last Crusade look brand new, but Raiders still has that 80's look to it. I don't know the details of why things like that happen. I just go along with it as long as it looks good. 31 DAYS OF HALLOWEENLET'S TALK BLU-RAY'STHE THING (1982)I spent like 6 hours going through this blu-ray the other day. I'm not really a fan of that cover, but if the picture upgrade is worth it then sure. Also, kind of neat of the progression of looks of the special features. As for Army of Darkness, the philosophy behind restorations can be different. Some like to make the movie look new, and so they try to get rid of the film grain with digital noise reduction. But its widely believed that this actually removes detail from the picture and it can end up looking really waxy and with unrealistic fleshtones. My Batman Begins bluray is like this, and the previous release of Spartacus i famous for it. However, companies have mostly taken the philosophy that movies should look pristine but still look like the time they were made in. Great examples are the Jaws bluray and North by Northwest. So if this bluray has a 90's film quality, its likely a success. Bluray's, now we're talking! So The Thing looked good with the 2K? Should I upgrade maybe? I'm not sure whether it's closer to the theatrical look, but I'm guessing it is. If you want a detailed breakdown you can always check out DVD Beaver: www.dvdbeaver.com/film5/blu-ray_reviews_73/the_thing_blu-ray.htmPersonally, I'll probably stick to my Universal BR, especially since I also own the old DVD with most of the special features on it, but would obviously go for the new one if I was buying for the first time.

The Shout Factory release is the one I'd recommend, too. Between the better-looking transfer and the buttload of cool special features, it's definitely the one worth more bang for your buck if you're a collector.

Wow, that was a lot. Very eclectic. But your mixing of formats is rather gross.

What is that Star Wars you have right beside Rogue One? My educated guess would be the VHS Star Wars tapes transferred to Blu Ray. In other words, the original cuts.

What is that Star Wars you have right beside Rogue One? That is the Project 4K77 edition that was fan generated a couple of years ago. It is an HD restoration of the theatrical cut of Star Wars using a combination of techniques I don't fully understand by a group of dedicated fans. It is far superior to the theatrical cut that was included as a bonus disc in the "Limited Edition" DVD set pictured beside it. The fact that it has proper cover art instead of some lousy photoshop garbage tasked out to a Fox intern is an added bonus.

I own the whole series on blu-ray, so I can confirm it's all on blu. Battlestar came out when TV on home media was hot shit and they came out on blu super early. Original BSG and 1980 are also on blu-ray. The only BSG series not on blu is Caprica, which sucks for me because I'm the one person alive who enjoyed that showm
