So if elite tier are movies like Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Schindler's List, E.T., Saving Private Ryan... Then upper is like Minority Report, Munich, Lincoln, etc. Empire of the Sun is not quite among those. Middle tier is pretty accurate. That's where I'd put The Post, The Color Purple, and to a lesser degree The Terminal and Sugarland Express and some of those other movies. And then bottom is of course The BFG, Always, 1941, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Tintin. Might be a hot take, but I like Empire of the Sun more than E.T. You?? Have a hot take?? Really, you??

I may be biased but there are a lot of weaker Spielberg movies than Ready Player One. BFG is one of them.

I think Ready Player One is pretty okay for what it is. The BFG, 1941, War Horse, and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull are not. I know some people, including this thread's OP, would argue Hook is better, but, no.

Ready Player One is better than The Sugarland Express No way. Sugarland Express isn't much more than a fun romp, but Ready Player One is an adaptation of second-rate fan fiction and filled to the brim with contrived plotting, a world that isn't interesting or believable in the slightest sense, and isn't so much a movie but more two hours of cameos and pop culture references with a flimsy story supporting it. Sugarland Express is fun and sort of impressive for a young Spielberg to have put together a lot of those car chases and stunts. Ready Player One is a stupid movie. A very stupid movie based on a very stupid piece of source material.

Sugarland Express is honestly pretty dull and standard for what it is, certainly nothing special.

I'm not really saying Sugarland Express is anything special, but it's harmless escapism.
Ready Player One is an idiotic film that hardly even musters up the escapist fun that Sugarland Express does.
And the fact we're even comparing a simple road movie from the 1970s to a massive budgeted science fiction film from the 2010s says a lot about how bad Ready Player One is.

I'm actually with Neverending on this one. Ready Player One satisfied and entertained me more than The Sugarland Express. It's not top tier Spielberg by any means, but it's a lot of fun and easily the most energetic movie Spielberg has put out in his later years, the kind of movie I didn't think he still had in him.
But I'm getting way ahead of myself.
