Hook is just way too long, especially for a kids movie. It has some great production design and Spielberg magic and I don't think it's bad, but it's sort of all over the place. It's entertaining, but not much perennial focus. Have you seen the Kevin Spacey movie, Nine Lives? It's like that, but instead of turning into a cat, Robin Williams turns into Peter Pan.

Hook is better than: The Sugarland Express 1941 The Color Purple Always The Lost World: Jurassic Park Amistad A.I. Artificial Intelligence Catch Me If You Can The Terminal War of the Worlds Munich Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull The Adventures of Tintin War Horse Lincoln Bridge of Spies Got a beef with maybe two of those, but yeah you're right Yeah, I debated whether or not to include War of the Worlds.

Catch Me If You Can, War of the Worlds, Munich, Lincoln, and Bridge of Spies are all WAY better than Hook. Also, while I can see the argument against films like The Sugarland Express, The Color Purple, Amistad, and A.I., I'd say they are all also better than Hook.
Anyway, the reason I say Hook works mostly as a nostalgia piece is because everyone I know who loves it was exposed to the film at a young age, whereas anyone who saw it when they were older had much more neutered reactions. I know when I saw it a few years ago it mostly just struck me as kind of lame with some small bits of enjoyment scattered throughout.

My buddy was going on a tear the other day about how Kevin Spacey might be the greatest living actor, so I showed him the Nine Lives trailer and now he wants to die.

Bill Murray is stoked because now Garfield looks like Citizen Kane in comparison.

When he calls Michael Keaton the greatest living actor, you can show him:

I don't know that there's a single actor alive (with the possible exception of Daniel Day-Lewis) who doesn't have some bullshit in their filmographies.

I haven't seen everything he's made but pretty much everything from '89 oneward seems entirely dignified and nothing from the 80s jumps out to me as embarrassing.

It does! Best Actor that year should have probably gone to Ed Harris in The Abyss - who wasn't even fucking nominated. Or MAYBE Robin Williams for Dead Poet's Society. Billy Crystal for When Harry Met Sally? Dare I say... Michael Keaton as BATMAN? I know Daniel Day-Lewis' performance in My Left Foot predated the Oscar cliche of rewarding actors for playing a character with a disability, but there's a reason why people generally look down on it. It FEELS like cheating and the audience is rarely emotionally connected. If Dracula , who's a HUGE film snob didn't know about My Left Foot until the other day, that says a lot about that movie's legacy.

It's a well respected movie, got mutliple Oscar nominations, and is currently at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. I doubt he views it as an embarrassment.

I started rewatching AI yesterday, until I was interrupted. Will probably finish today. I used to defend this movie, but am finding that more difficult to do....
