Spielberg inbetween directing E.T. and Poltergeist. Well technically he didn't direct Poltergeist, though that's a rumor that he directed some scenes.

If the Stranger Things guys and JJ Abrams can believably steal Spielberg's style I'm pretty sure Tobe Hooper could have done it too.

The film Spielberg was supposed to be making, The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara has been shitcanned. His next movie is The Post starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. Presumably he would shoot Indy 5 after if that's still on the docket...?

Your argument would have more weight if Spielberg's other produced movies from the 80's and 90's relied on his style. Poltergeist stands out because it's specifically a Spielberg-esque movie and it's well-documented that he was on the set almost everyday. E.T. and Poltergeist were made at the same time and right next to each other. Spielberg was accused of directing the movie since its release and even had to issue a press statement. There was even an investigation by the Director's Guild. Everyone agrees that, at best, Spielberg was a hand's on producer on the movie.

I don't doubt that he was pretty hands on with it, perhaps almost to the point where George Lucas was very hands on with Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, but at the end of the day I feel like you need a lot of proof before you just call the "directed by" credit a lie like some people do.

The closest thing Kubrick has to stinkers is some of his really early work when he wasn't fully formed. Most of his work is rock solid. Lolita is probably his weakest movie post-Killer's Kiss and even it is pretty damn good.

Lolita is probably his weakest movie post-Killer's Kiss You mean Spartacus. Maybe. I've been meaning to rewatch both Spartacus and Lolita. I will say while Spartacus isn't really much of a "Kubrick movie" it executes really well as far as Old Hollywood epics go.

it executes really well as far as Old Hollywood epics go. True... but that's still beneath Kubrick. Even he believed that.

I like Killer's Kiss for what it is. Spartacus is good, it's just not really a Kubrick film.

Spartacus is good, it's just not really a Kubrick film. Spartacus is a Kirk Douglas movie. Kubrick just did all the work while Douglas invited young ladies to his trailer. It's like when you need an oil change in your car. You can do it... but you rather have someone else do it instead.

It might not have a real Kubrick stamp to it, but he still directed a movie most directors would be lucky to call their best work.

It's also the movie that made Kubrick decide that from then on he would have full or nearly full creative control over the final product. There's a reason Spartacus doesn't feel like a Kubrick movie while all subsequent Kubrick movies do.
