Are we going to do some kind of vote to rank these once we have our hundred? Yes. If anyone is familiar with Google docs and guide me where to start, that's probably the easiest, unless people will want to email me and I'll do it in excel.

This pairing brought to you by European emigre directors from neighboring countries:
Director: Billy Wilder Written by Billy Wilder , I.A.L. Diamond Starring: Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis , Jack Lemmon Genre: Comedy, Music, Romance
#14 on 1998's AFI Top 100
After witnessing a Mafia murder, slick saxophone player Joe (Tony Curtis) and his long-suffering buddy, Jerry (Jack Lemmon), improvise a quick plan to escape from Chicago with their lives. Disguising themselves as women, they join an all-female jazz band and hop a train bound for sunny Florida. While Joe pretends to be a millionaire to win the band's sexy singer, Sugar (Marilyn Monroe), Jerry finds himself pursued by a real millionaire (Joe E. Brown) as things heat up and the mobsters close in.
Trivia: In 2008, a Californian man who found a little black dress in his closet was stunned when appraisers for U.S. TV series Antiques Roadshow (1997) determined it once belonged to Marilyn Monroe. The frock - which Monroe was sewn into for Some Like It Hot (1959) - was estimated to be worth $250,000.
Director: Miloš Forman Produced by Michael Douglas Written by Lawrence Hauben , Bo Goldman Based on the novel by Ken Kesey Starring: Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher Genre: Drama
#20 on 1998's AFI Top 100
When Randle Patrick McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) gets transferred for evaluation from a prison farm to a mental institution, he assumes it will be a less restrictive environment. But the martinet Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher) runs the psychiatric ward with an iron fist, keeping her patients cowed through abuse, medication and sessions of electroconvulsive therapy. The battle of wills between the rebellious McMurphy and the inflexible Ratched soon affects all the ward's patients.
Trivia: Four actors from this movie-- Brad Dourif, Vincent Schiavelli, Michael Berryman, and Sydney Lassick--would later make guest appearances on "The X-Files" (1993).
My votes:
Some Like It Hot: Keep, I guess, though it's certainly not as good as Godzilla. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: Keep.

These are both close for me and have their merits, but at the end of the day I think I can probably think of a hundred movies that are better than both. So, for now I'm going to say cut both.

I do like Some Like It Hot -- it's a good, funny comedy -- buuut I can't really say it's Top 100-worthy. So, cut.
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, I love, but I'm kinda torn on.... You know what, keep.

I'm kind of shocked at the Cuckoo reaction. Top 20? villain, some great shots inside the asylum, and got to love a story of a sane man judged insane/antisocial by the system.
If not Cuckoo, would Cool Hand Luke serve that itch?
Or is it a more of a "on the cusp of 100" feel?

Some Like it Hot: Keep I generally find that the classic screwball comedies are often good but not great and are largely rated too highly on a lot of film lists. Some Like it Hot is not one of those movies. It's a bold, constantly hilarious movie that also ends on one of the greatest closing lines in cinema history, up there with the likes of Chinatown and select others. It was well ahead of its time in 1959 but is amazingly fresh even today. Movies like The Philadelphia Story don't belong. Some Like it Hot is as good as classic Hollywood comedies come, and removing it would be a mistake. I'm not sure why this board isn't full steam ahead with this movie, it's a fucking classic and appears highly on all of the major critical lists for a reason. www.theyshootpictures.com/gf1000_all1000films_table.phpIt's #26 on this list. 26! One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: Keep Also not sure why this isn't getting more credit. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest won the Oscar in all of its major categories for a reason. Nicholson's best performance aside from The Shining, incredibly directed by Milos Forman who nails the difficult job of balancing the film's cynical examination of mental healthcare with hilarious scenes of rebellion, a fantastic script, and of course one of cinema's great villains with Nurse Ratchet. It has all the essentials that make a Hollywood classic a classic, and was a key film in the 1970s movement of Hollywood's greatest decade. Also it's #120 on the 1,000 list. Removing these two movies is a definite oversight.

This is probably our closest round yet. As of Dracula's post, Some Like it Hot is 4 keep, 6 cut; and Cuckoo is at a 5-5 standstill. Leaving this up for tonight, give Neverending, Wyldstaar and others a chance to put their two cents in.

This pairing brought to you by counterculture films of 1969:
Director: John Schlesinger Written by Waldo Salt, James Leo Herlihy
Starring: Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight
Genre: Drama
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #36 on 1998's AFI Top 100
Convinced of his irresistible appeal to women, Texas dishwasher Joe Buck (Jon Voight) quits his job and heads for New York City, thinking he'll latch on to some rich dowager. New York, however, is not as hospitable as he imagined, and Joe soon finds himself living in an abandoned building with a Dickensian layabout named Enrico "Ratso" Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman). The two form a rough alliance, and together they kick-start Joe's hustling career just as Ratso's health begins to deteriorate.
Trivia: Bob Dylan wrote the song "Lay, Lady, Lay" for the film, but didn't complete it in time to be included in the soundtrack. This was eventually replaced by "Everybody's Talkin'", a cover from Harry Nilsson
Director: Dennis Hopper Written by Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper Starring: Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper Genre: Adventure, Drama
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #88 on 1998's AFI Top 100
Wyatt (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Dennis Hopper), two Harley-riding hippies, complete a drug deal in Southern California and decide to travel cross-country in search of spiritual truth. On their journey, they experience bigotry and hatred from the inhabitants of small-town America and also meet with other travelers seeking alternative lifestyles. After a terrifying drug experience in New Orleans, the two travelers wonder if they will ever find a way to live peacefully in America.
Trivia: The favorite film of Charles Manson.
My votes:
Midnight Cowboy: Cut. I think if the flashbacks has more insight to them I'd be inclinded to keep it, but Jon Voight's character has about as much depth as Bill Fagerbakke in The Stand. Easy Rider: Cut. I find it self indulgent and uninteresting with little room for nuance. Dennis Hopper was a boatload of drugs during the shoot and it shows.
