We're also talking about a film that is absurdly iconic and yet still completely unique. Despite being a major influence on movies like Fight Club, The Dark Knight, and a swathe of dystopic sci-fi in the 70s, there's nothing quite like A Clockwork Orange.

I'd happily cut Spartacus for Clockwork. I broke the tie. Crisis averted. Next round.

I'd happily cut Spartacus for Clockwork. I'd rather have Barry Lyndon than either of them, but I'm pretty sure I won't be getting that.

This pairing brought to you by the costs of World War II:
Director: William Wyler Written by Robert E. Sherwood Starring: Myrna Loy, Fredric March, Harold Russell Genre: Drama
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Poll #37 on 1998's AFI Top 100
Fred, Al and Homer are three World War II veterans facing difficulties as they re-enter civilian life. Fred (Dana Andrews) is a war hero who, unable to compete with more highly skilled workers, has to return to his low-wage soda jerk job. Bank executive Al (Fredric March) gets into trouble for offering favorable loans to veterans. After losing both hands in the war, Homer (Harold Russell) returns to his loving fiancée, but must struggle to adjust. Trivia: Despite his Oscar-nominated performance, Harold Russell was not a professional actor. As the Academy Board of Governors considered him a long shot to win, they gave him an Academy Honorary Award "for bringing hope and courage to his fellow veterans through his appearance". When Russell in fact won Best Supporting Actor, there was an enthusiastic response. He is the only actor to have received two Academy Awards for the same performance. In 1992, Russell sold his Best Supporting Actor statuette at auction for $60,500 ($110,200 today), to pay his wife's medical bills. Director: Steven Spielberg Written by Robert Rodat Starring: Tom Hanks, Edward Burns Genre: Epic, War
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Poll Too recent for the 1998 AFI list
Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) takes his men behind enemy lines to find Private James Ryan, whose three brothers have been killed in combat. Surrounded by the brutal realties of war, while searching for Ryan, each man embarks upon a personal journey and discovers their own strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honor, decency and courage.
My votes:
Best Years of Our Lives: I'm torn. The filmmaking here isn't spectacular, but the story is an important one, and much better told than The Deer Hunter. Harold Russell's performance is what may keep this for me, but I'm up in the air.
Saving Private Ryan: Keep. The execution here isn't perfect, but as someone that grew up with my grandmother very active in the VFW Auxillary, I'd heard so many WWII stories from the vets there. They all greatly appreciated this movie, particularly the D-day scene. That's enough for me to keep. I'll sharpen my Spielberg ax for E.T.

Cut Days of Our Lives. We have no room for soap operas.
Keep Saving Ryan's Privates. Porn is under-represented on the list.

Cut Best Years of Our Lives
Keep Saving Private Ryan, and if it gets cut, all of you will be dead to me. Dead!

While I express distaste for the disrespect it has been getting from these parts as of late, I will nonetheless vote to cut The Best Years of Our Lives
And I will also vote to cut Saving Private Ryan, which has an amazing opening battle scene and a very innovative visual style but whose script is kind of basic after that point and which has a kind of mawkish framing story.

Clockwork Orange sitting at a 5-5 tie. Frizzo the Clown come vote for Clockwork so we can get it across the finish line. I'm all for hot takes but the fact that Clockwork Orange might get cut is absurd. Come on guys, we're better than this. Looks like I arrived a bit late, so sorry At least it got voted in.

Out of respect for PhantomKnight and his strong opinion on this topic, I will switch my vote to keep for Saving Private Ryan. I do this because there are a lot of things I like about the film and because I think a community list should include films from individual members that they have strong good-faith opinions towards. This should not be viewed as a precedent that I will support anything that anyone decides to whine about the inclusion of.
