I feel like there needs to be more discussion about how other movies get onto the list. Like, having people make their pitches and try to convince everyone. Cool. We should each make cases for our picks next round.

So much hate for Tootsie. I’m sure Big Momma’s House would have done better.

This pairing brought to you by fascist states and people dressing up very strangely:
Director: Bob Fosse Written by Joe Masteroff, John Van Drutun Starring: Liza Minelli, Michael York Genre: Musical, Drama
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Poll Does not appear on 1998's AFI Top 100
In Berlin in 1931, American cabaret singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) meets British academic Brian Roberts (Michael York), who is finishing his university studies. Despite Brian's confusion over his sexuality, the pair become lovers, but the arrival of the wealthy and decadent playboy Maximilian von Heune (Helmut Griem) complicates matters for them both. This love triangle plays out against the rise of the Nazi party and the collapse of the Weimar Republic.
Director: Stanley Kubrick Written by Stanley Kubrick, based on the novel by Anthony Burgess Starring: Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee Genre: Crime, Drama, Sci-fi
#46 on the 1998 AFI list
In an England of the future, Alex (Malcolm McDowell) and his "Droogs" spend their nights getting high at the Korova Milkbar before embarking on "a little of the old ultraviolence," while jauntily warbling "Singin' in the Rain." After he's jailed for bludgeoning the Cat Lady to death, Alex submits to behavior modification technique to earn his freedom; he's conditioned to abhor violence. Returned to the world defenseless, Alex becomes the victim of his prior victims.
My votes:
Cabaret: Cut. If anything Fosse should be on the list, it should be All That Jazz. I don't get the appearl of this movie.
A Clockwork Orange: I'm inclined to cut as it's barely an American movie. Stanley Kubrick and the financial backing are both American, but the filming and stars are all British. We have 2001 and Dr. Strangelove already kept, Shining voted in, and Spartacus is probably a shoe-in. I'm fine with cutting this movie.

Cut Cabaret. I agree with thebtskink - All That Jazz is a much more worthy Fosse film to include if it manages to get on.
Since we now have The Shining, cut A Clockwork Orange, too.

Cabaraet can go. And clockwork... hmm that's a tough one. I might need to hear SnoBorder's write up, but for now I'm going to say cut.

I abstain from voting regarding Cabaret, as I haven't seen it.

I understand the impulse to cut Clockwork given we already have a lot of Kubrick, but I think it should stay. Certainly a milestone in pushing on-screen violence and the more complex morality of the New Hollywood. It's questions of how to fight crime and where the limits of the state should end are still extremely relevant. It's also just an exhilarating watch with an amazing central performance and some unforgettable scenes.

Clockwork Orange sitting at a 5-5 tie. Frizzo the Clown come vote for Clockwork so we can get it across the finish line. I'm all for hot takes but the fact that Clockwork Orange might get cut is absurd. Come on guys, we're better than this.

Me too.
And Spielberg will have Schindler's List, Jaws, Raiders and probably Saving Private Ryan and Close Encounters on the list. Scorsese will have Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas. I think Kubrick can keep 2001 and Clockwork with Shining on the side.
