Finally got around to seeing Cats, just out of curiosity (no pun intended). This was quite a fascinating piece of cinema. It looked bad. I heard it was bad, but I still had no idea just how bad it really was. Some movies you can go into and be like, "Yeah, it wasn't good, but it wasn't nearly what everyone was making it out to be". Not this movie. It was one of the worst wide released films I've ever seen. The cast and crew involved just make it more astounding.

It's insane what VFX houses and artists do on a regular basis. 30+ hour shifts, sleeping at their desks, none of that is uncommon. How anyone can work at one of those places in the long-term is beyond me.

How anyone can work at one of those places in the long-term is beyond me. Post production gets absolutely no respect. On set, we're so spoiled and throw money away on the most frivolous of things. Post production is constantly working under the gun and under barrages of impatience from producers and directors that have no clue how long their processes take but demand perfection instantly, as you can see here with Tom Hooper. It's similar to the issues with assistants' pay and treatment in our industry; it's just disgusting how these two factions are constantly treated from project to project. These VFX houses in particular are operating on razor thin margins, and it's not uncommon for even the ones that work on blockbuster projects to go belly up shortly after. Assistants are staging their protests for better working wages and conditions. I'm shocked that post production people aren't doing the same...yet. |

I remember seeing this. Astounding that a movie could be the literal backbone of a two billion dollar grossing film, and shut down. Things really need to change, I feel for post production workers out there. They've got it really rough and no one seems to care. |

There are simultaneously no words to describe this thing, and not enough. It just astounds me that anybody at Universal looked at this and in good conscience said, "Yeah, release this to the public." I'm sure it's only a matter of time before there's some kind of behind the scenes tell-all book or something about the making of this film, and I for one can't wait to hear that full story. Cause I look at this thing and struggle to find any positives in a movie featuring the work of so many clearly talented individuals. Well, okay, there are two positives: the songs themselves are sometimes pretty good and catchy (but they come at the cost of the accompanying visuals), and Ian McKellen somehow comes out of this having given a somewhat decent performance. At least he committed to it. Everything else...yikes. I can't remember the last time a big budget studio production made so many bad decisions on so many levels. I mean, you've got a musical number featuring cockroaches with human faces for the love of Christ. WHAT? Just how many drugs did this cast and crew do? I'll say this: it's so stupefyingly bad that you can't take yours eyes off it and in that respect, I AM glad I saw it for myself. But to say Cats is one of the worst big budget studio movies of the past or any other decade would be a severe understatement. It's bound to gain The Room-levels of notoriety, and it already has.
