Thanksgiving is at the end of the month. It's a holiday where we give thanks to people, health and things. And I think we can make room for movies. So from here till Turkey Day, I'm gonna pay tribute to some of the movies I'm thankful for. You guys can join me if you want. MOVIES I'M THANKFUL FORDAY ONE: KING KONG (1933)December 2005. Peter Jackson's remake is released and two King Kong movies are on television: the original and the De Laurentiis version from 1976. I watched them all cause I'm a wild man. And to my surprise, the original is the best one. How? Why? Well. Two things. One, stop-motion animation is very underrated. We've had a guy in a suit and a CGI Kong. And neither one was able to bring Kong to life in a way that emotionally connected to the audience. There's a certain magic to stop-motion that people don't appreciate. Stop-motion is taking something that physically exists and giving it a soul. That's powerful. And two, story and characters are everything. 1933 was a primitive time for filmmaking. De Laurentiis and Jackson had the technology to make Kong truly cinematic, but they did not have the right script. Watching the 1933 King Kong is a reminder that story and characters are what matters and that everything else is icing on the cake. So for that, I am thankful.

I am Thankful that Kong has lived long enough to have remake in every generation and really Peter Jacksons was the best looking visual Kong. The Classic however I remember well for most part because the village rampage scene at the end.

MOVIES I'M THANKFUL FORDAY THREE: SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950)sorry for skipping a dayWhen I was in High School, my experience with movies from the 1950's was very limited and I didn't have much of an opinion for what I had seen. When it came to 1950's pop culture, I gravitated more towards music and television. But that all changed when I saw Sunset Boulevard for the first time. I had heard of the movie and its reputation, but until I actually saw it, I didn't know how raw and emotional it is. The movie is about a struggling Hollywood writer who gets stuck living with a has-been actress who has a few wires loose in her brain. Director Billy Wilder doesn't sugarcoat anything and gives a fairly realistic portrayal of Hollywood and the people in it. Granted, some things are exaggerated for the sake of entertainment and storytelling, but generally, I feel like Wilder is being mostly honest. This also opened my eyes to "the industry." I knew a lot about Hollywood history at this point but had never really analyzed "the business" and how it affected people. So for all this, I'm thankful.

Im thankful for Michael Mann's Heat for giving me my all time favorite movie, and for arguably one of the best shootout scenes in cinema and for giving Pacino and De Niro arguably they're last great roles

GHOSTBUSTERS (1984)As a kid, Ghostbusters was in my Top 10 favorite movies. Looking back, the appeal wasn't the humor or the special effects. It was the world. The best thing about Ghostbusters, which is greatly lacking in the remake, is the sense of reality. The characters feel real. New York feels genuine. The ghosts, as outlandish as they are, feel like a threat. It's easy to get invested in the story. Yes -- a comedy -- where the story matters. It's even debatable if Ghostbusters even qualifies as a full fledged comedy. Bill Murray plays the only character trying to be funny. Everyone else is either playing it straight or is only funny from the point-of-view of the audience. Effort was made to create a real world that audiences would care about -- and they succeeded. That's why there was so much anger about the remake. As crazy as it may sound, Ghostbusters is up there with Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Audiences want good stories and characters from that world. Look at the Star Wars prequels. You felt the CGI. The wooden acting was a disgrace. That's not what you want from Star Wars and it's not what you want from Ghostbusters either. The remake isn't terrible. There's a lot of good stuff in it. But it feels fake. That's why it failed. Ghostbusters, the original, is a testament to the importance of reality in cinema regardless of the genre and style. It HAS to feel real. For that -- I am thankful. Happy Thanksgiving, CS!.

Remember the 5th of November, for that is when Dr. Emmett Brown invented time travel. Let's hope Marty steals the Sports Almanac from Donald Trump so we can go back to the real 2017. BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985)So what is it about Back to the Future that has made it one of the most beloved movies of the last quarter century? The answer is in the Sports Almanac. As we get older the number of "what if" questions grow in our head. Life is a neverending quest for happiness and depression is usually winning the battles. You spend most of your time playing Monday Morning Quarterback. So here comes along Back to the Future, a movie about how the little moments change your life for the better. Punching the school bully. Performing at the school dance. Reading a letter. It's a movie that makes you feel good and gives you a positive outlook on life. For that, I am thankful.

His Girl Friday (1940) His Girl Friday by Howard Hawks is the sort of romantic comedy that nobody makes anymore. Cary Grant's portrayal of Walter Burns is the perfect balance of cocksure, charm and smarminess. Rosalind Russell's Hildy Johnson can switch between assertive, ruthless and loving in an instant without it feeling jarring. Ralph Belamy's turn as the straight-man Bruce Baldwin has a wholesome naïveté that bounces between Grant and Russell mostly at an utter loss for what is really going on, unable to keep up with the non-stop banter. If you're an Aaron Sorkin fan, then you should be thankful for His Girl Friday. It's his favorite film, and certainly holds more influence over him than any other work. The long shots of rapid dialog and clever wordplay that are his signature can be traced straight back to this movie. His excellent HBO series The Newsroom is as close to a modern remake as we are likely to get, which is for the best. Most rom-com directors would mangle the characters and story just as badly today as was done with Switching Channels (1988), which was a disaster of a picture.

RoboCopRobocop is the kind of movie I just love. You hear the premise and title and you assume another brain-dead 80s action movie, but the film goes well above standard action fare. The film's fans will typically jump to Robocop's satirical elements to argue the film's greatness. While the film's portrayal of rampant crime is certainly exaggerated, it's depiction of the news media and ruthless corporate culture have proven very prophetic. Additionally, the film is able to mine this satirical streak for some genuinely hysterical bits of comedy. Robocop is often laugh out loud funny, even slapticky at points, but it never descends into farce. A big part of this is the film remains interested in Murphy's remaining humanity and allows the seriousness to play in certain moments. Peter Weller also brings a lot to the role, especially when you consider the massive limitations placed on him. Another crucial player is the score, which balances an inspiring action movie sound with a more contemplative and melancholy side. Even without these elements, Robocop would still be a movie worth valuing. The film is effectively able to balance Robocop's personal story and satirical elements with a criminal conspiracy and a ton of well-developed characters. This is a film with a hero, a sidekick, two different villains, and a plethora of other side characters. Most movies would collapse under the weight of so much going on, but Robocop is able to juggle everything and tie up loose ends in a clean hour and forty minutes. Most of the characters aren't particularly deep, but they have distinct personalities and are brought to life by a wonderful assortment of character actors. The film also features several fun action scenes which are distinct and memorable along with some awesome dialogue. Robocop is the kind of movie that could have been nothing more than a silly novelty. Instead, it's an action movie classic and a masterclass on how to balance a complex tone. What's not to love?

Love Actually So thankful that all the other versions that tried to do multiple stories like this in the Rom-Com genre failed. This movie Reminds us all heart-warmingly of the importance of love—no matter what the circumstance or situation.

THE USUAL SUSPECTS (1995)It's a matter of time till Bryan Singer joins Kevin Spacey in the Hollywood sex scandal and society no longer let's us enjoy this movie. That's a shame because it's a fucking great movie. This cop, played by Chazz Pama-Whatever, is obsessed with taking down a corrupt ex-cop played by Miller's Crossing. He thinks he got his shot when he gets to interrogate one of his associates played by Spacey. What's great about Usual Suspects is that it's arguably the best example of an unreliable narrator on film. We never really know what happened or who any of these characters are. It's just two shit-talkers having a battle of wits in a room. What's not to love? I used to read the screenplay religiously back in high school. It taught me everything a book or teacher couldn't. For that, I am thankful.

The People vs Larry Flynt (1996)Hugh Hefner passed away recently. There was talks of a biopic directed by Brett Ratner and starring Jared Leto. It's doubtful that project will see the light of day and that's fine because we still have The People vs Larry Flynt. I won't pretend it's a great movie. Most of it is your run-of-the-mill biopic. But what works IS great. Larry Flynt is a joke and morally questionable but he took a bullet to defend a right we're all entitled to: freedom of speech. In recent times, people have misunderstood what that means. We have the right to speak our mind but we aren't exempt to consequence. If I say Kevin Smith is a national treasure and SnoBorderZero punches me in the face, well, I had it coming. But if SnoBorderZero burns my house down, well, that's just ridiculous. And that's at the heart of the movie. The whole story leads up to the Supreme Court trial between Jerry Falwell and Flynt. Falwell sued Flynt because his feelings were hurt. You know who else's feelings were hurt? Donald Trump. You know who got him elected? People who's feelings were hurt. It has been exactly one year. Are you happy with your buyers remorse? Don't let your emotions overwhelm you and also be mindful of how you exercise your first amendment rights. Learn from Larry Flynt and Jerry Falwell.

MAN ON THE MOON (1999)In honor of the Jim Carrey/Andy Kaufman documentary on Netflix, let’s talk about Man on the Moon. MAN ON THE MOON (1999)Hugh Hefner passed away recently. Are you happy with your buyers remorse? Don't let your emotions overwhelm you and also be mindful of how you exercise your first amendment rights. Learn from Larry Flynt and Jerry Falwell. Doomsday and Dracula were debating what defined a millennial. Well, millennials turned The Grinch into a holiday classic. Clearly - Doomsday won this argument. We... are the Jim Carrey generation. In Living Color. Ace Ventura. The Mask. Dumb and Dumber. The Cable Guy. Liar Liar. These are the defining comedies of our childhood and have no relevance to millennials whatsoever. Ask thebtskink. He’s done the research. You know what else millennials don't care about? Andy Kaufman. Can you imagine if millennials discovered Andy Kaufman? Unleash the trigger warnings! Kaufman was the Sacha Baron Cohen of his day minus the social commentary. He lived to prank the masses. He’d go to comedy clubs and do anything except a standup routine. He pretended to be a chauvinist pig and wrestled women. He’d go on late night television and stage fights. All this was before the Internet. Entertainment options were limited. Us pre-millennials know that pain. We used to watch Jackass. All this is covered in Man on the Moon. The timeline isn’t entirely accurate and certain things were omitted, but it covers all the basics. As far as biopics go, it’s okay. The reason to watch is for Jim Carrey. Whether he portrayed Andy Kaufman or the public image of Andy Kaufman can be debated. Whether that was a good decision or not can be debated as well. I just see it as another wacky Jim Carrey character. You can watch the Kaufman footage. He had a Jew-y approach to his hoaxes that’s missing from Carrey’s performance. Kaufman was a New Yorkers. That’s just not in Carrey’s arsenal. Not that it mattered. The movie is just a celebration of harmless fun. On the surface, his hijinks might seem outrageous and offensive but no one was hurt. In these millennial influenced days, we’ve lost track of that and it is good to be reminded not to always take things so seriously. For that, I am thankful. Millennials, listen to your pal The Grinch. He has never given you bad advice.

Man on the Moon might be my favorite Jim Carrey movie. After first watching it I started reading a lot about Kaufman's comedy and it's so damn funny. You can still find a lot of it on youtube.

DoomsdayHe went a tad overboard in the 80’s but he was lovably mischievous in the 70’s. That’s what was missing in the Jim Carrey movie. Although Carrey is BY FAR the better Tony Clifton,

Not a movie, but whatever... Thing I'm Thankful For: Rocket LeagueIn the wake of the Battlefront II controversy, it's refreshing to look to a game like Rocket League, which is very loving to its fans. Here's a game that a lot of PS4 owners (myself included) picked up for free with a PSPlus subscription. I didn't know what to expect, but the game has become one of my biggest time sinks of this console generation. The premise of "soccer with bumper cars" is simple, but one which leads to a lot of fun chaos and can be wonderfully addicting. The simplicty of the game masks some very well-refined mechanics. A surprising degree of thought and skill is required to really do well at the game. It's also proved a great way to game with friends, especially since the game's silly concept and aesthetic made for a lighter environment than something like Call of Duty multiplayer. Psyonix have also been a remarkably cool developer, dropping tons of new content for free including new arenas, new cosmetic items, and several new game types. There is also paid DLC, but it's all cosmetic, as are the in-game unlockables. A first time player and someone with 100 hours in both have access to the same tools and that makes for a level playing field. In addition to the fun gameplay, creativity, and incredibly cool developer, I'm also thankful to have played Rocket League when it was still fresh and new. This isn't just for hipster cred either. As the game has been out for a while now, most of the people still online are people who play the game a lot and have really built up their skills. Not to sound like a scrub, but I do miss the shared, wonderful chaos that defined lobbies back in the day. So yeah, I'm thankful for Rocket League, the little game that could.

BATMAN (1966)Long before Thanos turned people into dust, there was the United Underworld, made up of Gotham’s greatest supervillains, doing the same. While the fate of the Avengers remains to be seen, history teaches us that it took a dynamic duo to solve this devilish crime. When PG Cooper returns home for Canadian Thanksgiving (I believe they eat moose instead of Turkey), he’ll binge Batman: The Animated Series on blu-ray, a show made when he was still in his daddy’s nutsack. He only understands a world of Christopher Nolan’s and Zack Snyder’s. But when Doomsday and I were elementary school aged children, we could watch Batman: The Animated Series on Fox Kids, then switch to the Family Channel to watch 1960’s Batman and then put on our VHS copy of Tim Burton’s Batman. Adam West was Batman just as much as Michael Keaton and Kevin Conroy. Ceasar Romero and Jack Nicholson were equals as The Joker. Julie Newmar’s Catwoman and Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman gave us an erections. So why must the fandom be divided by a Trump wall? Can’t we love these different versions of the Caped Crusader and Boy Wonder? Batman doesn’t need to be one thing. Don’t let Batman divide. Let Batman unite.
