For you: Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd Tokyo Drift and then Dumb & Dumberer. No, I want Dumb and Dumber first. We need an answer as to whether Doomsday hates it more than To.

It would be very, very tough to dislike Dumberer more than To.

I'll take Columbus, based solely on loving John Cho's performance in Searching.
Gonna watch one of my Criterions and I'll give you a list.

I haven't even had time to watch mine from this round. I'm probably out for now. donny and Nilade I know you still have yours to power through but any interest in next round? I'll pass this round and jump in the next. I did finish my movie a few minutes ago, but will post tomorrow night. We're doing a refi on our house and I need to scramble around tonight looking for all the required paperwork the mortgage company is asking for.

Man fuck mortgage paperwork. Buying a house? Bought one last year. The search took long enough to have to pull all that crap twice. Fresh in my brain how terrible the process was.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg There a couple of things that jump out at you right away with this film, primarily its use of color, impeccable set design and last but not least, Catherine Deneuve. What a babe. It's fitting that in the last month I saw one of her most recent performances in 2019's The Truth only to go back to the beginning with Umbrellas.
Ultimately, I enjoyed this. I always have a soft spot for romantic movies where the two lead's don't end up together. Star-Crossed if you will. It has a nice clean, 3 act structure that spans 6 years. We quickly meet our two lovers, Geneviève and Guy, with little to no background, other that they are madly in love, and that's fine by me. Sometimes, the less the better. We do know the Geneviève's mother disapproves and that Guy lives with his sick aunt, whom he takes care of.
The first act of the story takes up around 40 or so minutes of the overall 90 minutes and it sets the stage for what will come. You do really get a sense that these two people care for each other, so when the inevitable separation comes at the end of the first act, you feel the heartache and pain. Though her mother might not approve, she is there to console Geneviève, which I liked to see.
I think the pacing is pretty good, all things considered. You are dealing with a 6 year window of time over only 90 minutes, so it definitely is a bit of condensed story telling. I think some things could have been fleshed out more, but overall it has a good flow. Another thing is that pretty much the whole movie is in song, which isn't unusual for musicals, I suppose, but at times I felt it dragged a bit. On the flip side though, there are some great sequences of song and dance. I loved their first night out together, and it was a nice callback to see Guy return to the bar where they last sat together before he departed.
One thing I couldn't stop thinking about was the connections to 2016's La La Land. I believe there are some reports out there that Damien Chazelle really looked at Umbrellas as some sort of inspiration, and between the color schemes (yellow dresses) and the overall themes, you can see the impact this movie has.
Look on the bright side Guy, it's not all bad. You got the all white gas station you always wanted.
8/10
