Guaranteed none of those girls were alive when the first American Pie was released. It's been 21 years since the first movie, and teenagers in sex comedies are usually played by women in their mid-20s... so they might have technically been alive, certainly didn't watch it in theaters.

I looked up the top 4 and the two with birthdays available were born in 1998. They were one, eff!

I have seen Playtime (watched it for the Film Club actually) and have seen Children of Paradise. Beneath that I've never seen Virianda (because I'm trying to watch as many of the Bunuel movies in chronological order) or La Strada (because I always assumed I'd just blind buy that once Criterion put out the blu-ray) or Shoah (which would obviously be impractical for a round 200). Beneath those the highest one I haven't seen was Jeanne Dielman, which I had hoped to see if it ever showed up at my rep theater (I've heard you need to pay very close attention to it). Only other one lower in the top 100 I haven't seen are Gertrud.

The Guns of NavaroneIf one good thing came out of World War II, it's that Hollywood was able to use it as a backdrop for their movies and a vehicle for their stars time and again and again. From the onset of the war through the decades that followed, there was no shortage of war films and everyone wanted a bite at the apple. Of course, like anything Hollywood takes a crack at, there were 10 bad war movies for every good one and believe me when I tell you growing up my parents tried to watch everyone one of them regardless of quality. One that slipped through the cracks for me was The Guns of Navarone which is obvious because I'm reviewing it here. This was one of those movies that has always been on my list because it almost felt like I was disappointing the old timers that I grew up with and after seeing it I can understand their appreciation for the movie. Gregory Peck stars as a Captain/mountain climbing enthusiast who helps lead a team to destroy a pair of Nazi cannons that are wreaking havoc on the Royal Navy who are attempting to rescue two thousand British troops before the Germans come to wipe them out. With a crack team of explosives experts and professional soldiers, the team must scale an impossible rock face before traversing the island of Navarone before infiltrating the heavily guarded fortress where the guns are located before time runs out. Technically this is a war movie since it's a story with the war at the forefront and Nazis as the villains however it's just as much an adventure story as it is a war movie. For one this movie had a lot of action and suspense outside of the standard battle scenes we're used to seeing. There are a lot of gun fights and straight up killing to the point where it almost made me forget I was watching a movie with Gregory Peck and David Niven from 1961. There's also a sort of charm to how the production quality has aged. A lot of people might see an old school matte painting and instantly think a movie looks dated but to me things like that come across as elements that establish a time and place not just for the plot of the movie but for how the movie was made. There were a lot of those effects of the time used in The Guns of Navarone and for me they only make the allure of the filmmaking behind it more vivid. The movie was directed by J. Lee Thompson supposedly as a last minute hire after the original director was fired. I hadn't heard of Thompson and looking him up it was neat to see how he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Director for this film. He directed the original Cape Fear also with Gregory Peck and later went onto direct several more films that I've never heard of however among those were some of the Planet of the Apes sequels as well as Death Wish 4: The Crackdown and the 80s version of King Solomon's Mines with Richard Chamberlain. Some would call that a downward trajectory but I consider it a diverse filmography. Who else would have wanted to director two Planet of the Apes sequels after all? Also on a personal note, when I was working at Dreamworks there were several huge, enormous posters throughout the small lot. Posters the size of large garage doors taking up entire walls. It was actually pretty cool. One of those posters was an Italian print for The Guns of Navarone. I don't think this is it exactly but it's very close. Maybe it is, I'm going based on memory that's a few years old at this point. Anyways, I walked by a 10 foot print of this every day for a long time so it was always in the back of my head, I'm glad I finally knocked it out. Good rec, Ian! A- so says Doomsday

God Told Me To
A detective investigates a series of connected violent incidents, including a sniper attack, a cop on a shooting spree, and a man who gunned down his family, in 1970’s New York. The connection – all suspects claimed “God told me to” as the cause. As he gets deeper into the case, he begins to realize that the root cause goes far beyond cult like tendencies, and realizes he’s more personally connected to these murders than he would’ve ever guessed.
I didn’t realize that I was a fan of writer/director Larry Cohen, until I started looking into his body of work, after I watched this film. He’s written/directed such genre greats as the Maniac Cop series, It’s Alive series, The Stuff, Q, and a number of other classics that I didn’t even realize he was responsible for until after viewing this film. Maybe that’s why I’m so disappointed in God Told Me To. What elevated those movies to me was that they were fun and didn’t take themselves seriously, which is the problem with this film. What could’ve been a serious crime/occult/horror thriller takes a sharp detour three quarters into the film with two major reveals, one of which is great, and the other which reduces this to a campy sci-fi genre flick, but one that’s guilty of taking itself too seriously.
I’d be wrong to say I didn’t enjoy portions of the film, but for me, that finale failed to deliver the way I’m sure it was intended to, reducing the film into almost a parody of how it began.
5/10

The Hill (1965) The Hill was one of the last films that Sidney Lumet made during his early 50s/60s winning streaks before he sort of went dormant before making a big comeback in the 70s. It concerns a British military prison in North Africa where the officers are sort of trying to “break” their prisoners for whatever reason leading said prisoners to sort of fight back. As such it could be seen as a sort of British set take on Cool Hand Luke, although it was actually made two years before that and is sort of in a lineage of movies that take the side of prisoners who kind of stand up to their authority figures which would eventually culminate in The Shawshank Redemption, but this lacks the feel good triumph of the human spirit side of some of those movies. The film stars Sean Connery right when he was at the height of his James Bond fame and was a part he plainly accepted as a means of working against type and emphasizing his rough and tumble credentials that the nominally more suave and sophisticated James Bond role didn’t quite hit. Lumet shoots the film in black and white towards the end of when that was seen as a routine option and he has a lot of it shot handheld and in relative close-up to give it a sort of subtle documentary-like intimacy. The film is not too heavy on plot and mostly focuses in on the effect of the prison on the prisoners as conditions worsen and it can take a little while to get where it’s going and then it ends really abruptly, which I have mixed feelings about. A strong movie to be sure, but Lumet certainly made better movies both before and after and if it’s a classic it’s a minor one. ***1/2 out of Five

I will say my 4.5 Letterboxd review was probably a little overzealous. I just remember it being a movie I'd never heard of and finding it pretty gripping.

PhantomKnightWidows (2018)I’m not a fan of Fake Steve McQueen. That movie with Michael Fassbender’s dick in your face was a joke and his White Jesus slave movie is overrated, but I was curious to watch his UK version of Melissa McCarthy’s The Kitchen. Basically, three women have to pay back their dead husband’s debt. Pretty simple premise that could lead to an effective thriller, but McQueen seems more interested in U.S. politics and whats-his-face from Get Out trying to act like a badass. Hard pass. Palm Springs (2020)Another movie riffing on Groundhog Day. It doesn’t offer anything new from a storytelling perspective. The script is arguably the worst thing about the movie. But the cast is really good and the film is very charming. It’s a breezy watch. Highly recommend.

Dumb & Dumber (1994) (Review 1 of 2)
Like the title and characters would suggest, Dumb & Dumber isn't a movie that requires a whole lot of analysis. It's your fairly standard, straightforward comedy, and like a lot of the rest of those...it's very hit-and-miss. About half of this movie I would say is honestly pretty funny, while the other half...not so much. The latter half contains the typical sort of bathroom/gross-out humor that seems typical of a Farrelly Brothers comedy in particular -- the gag with the cop drinking pee, Harry unknowingly drinking a laxative, etc. -- and is roll-your-eyes-worthy. The movie also has a kidnapping/ransom plot concerning Lauren Holly's character that just feels random to have in this movie and concerns some gangster-like characters that are kind of boring. Fortunately, though, the half of the movie that's more focused on Harry and Lloyd -- and thus the chemistry between Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels -- works considerably better, as does the humor when it comes about more from their personalities than the crazy/wacky circumstances they often get into. Carrey and Daniels are the glue keeping Dumb & Dumber together, and they save the movie from being just another dumb (no pun intended) comedy.
