Round 200 is just IanTheCool marathoning Quentin Tarantino movies. We've also agreed PG Cooper marathoning Ed Wood. We should all pick one.

True RomanceI did think the violence was excessive for excess's sake and could have been toned down.
You must be new to Quentin Tarantino. I often feel the same with most of his flicks.

Badlands (1973)
My experience with Terrence Malick up till now has been limited to nonexistent. I'd only ever seen The Thin Red Line before -- a movie which many cinephiles would rank over 1998's other WWII epic Saving Private Ryan, a decision I disagree with personally, but I digress -- and I remember thinking it was a strong piece of work, if not more than a tad pretentious. So here we have Badlands, his debut feature and arguably more straightforward. The movie tells the tale of Kit Carruthers (Martin Sheen) and Holly Sargis (Sissy Spacek), a young couple in South Dakota who go on the run from the law after a violent crime. The set-up immediately brings to mind comparisons to Bonnie & Clyde, but given that this is a Terrence Malick film, the execution is decidedly less..Hollywood. While I was watching it, the style and tone certainly struck me. Badlands certainly has a pretty straightforward narrative, but it operates on a kind of logic that seems to rub up marginally against that of the dream variety. Given that Malick himself has since described it as its own folk/fairy tale, my impression didn't seem far off. Mood, music and imagery are just as important here as plot and character, and the balance feels pretty even throughout. Sort of like a best of both worlds between more Hollywood expectations and what would by all accounts become Malick's trademark sensibilities. Another big factor in the film's success are the two main performances by Sheen and Spacek. Sheen in particular is really interesting here as Kit, a Korean War vet who clearly has issues with authority and rules and a casual propensity for violence, a volatile combination. So when he and Holly hit the road, you're kind of just waiting for those moments where he'll do something, but not in a detrimental way to the film. In short, he's a really compelling character brought to life vividly. As a debut, Badlands is quite impressive and I can see here what so many have come to admire about Malick. I'm not quite sure I can say I loved this movie, but I certainly liked the hell out of it.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
It was truly infuriating to watch Portrait of a Lady on Fire become the critical darling of 2019 cinema while Neon's fucked release schedule made it impossible for me to see the film within the year. Why most you hurt me, so? Finally catching up with the film, it really is as great as everyone has been saying. Céline Sciamma and actors Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel do a marvelous job subtly building a deep intimacy between leads. Rather like falling in love, you don't realize how deep you're in until it's too late. The film in general is beautifully made and really comes alive in a handful of amazing scenes. The beach scene from the poster is hauntingly sparse and the final stretch of the film is amazing. In this way, Portrait of a Lady on Fire reminded me a lot of Call Me By Your Name. Much of the runtime feels like it exists outside of time until suddenly we're remained of impermanence and each scene hits a perfect emotional tone before hitting a powerful end. But while Call Me By Your Name ends on a deep sadness, there's more of a bitter-sweet quality to Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Certainly, something has been lost, but the overall emphasis is on the powerful impacts characters have made on each other.
Beautiful film.
