I wouldn't say it stars Samuel L. Jackson. He has about a 2 minute cameo, at best, and this was before he was even a household name. That was the joke.

For Round 200 we should watch a Samuel L. Jackson movie that only features him for a minute.

Jabberwocky (1977) Jabberwocky was Terry Gilliam’s first non-Monty Python branded film (though it does have Michael Palin in it) and I remember it being kind of hard to find back when I was first exploring Gilliam’s filmography. Looking at it now you can certainly see it as a bit of a transitionary film in which he was coming to find his later style but it wasn’t quite there yet. The film is named after a Lewis Carroll poem about a monster, and that monster is part of the movie but doesn’t really show up until the very end and the movie ultimately doesn’t have much to do with Carroll’s work… or does it. Much of the film feels kind of aimless sand doesn’t really connect with its protagonist in the same way most movies do, which is to say that there’s a stream of conscious quality to it that one could argue is in line with Carroll’s writing style. I guess you could call the film a comedy, it certainly has a sort of manic energy, but it’s also kind of a one joke movie around the theme of how life in the medieval was kind of shitty, which is sort of the same comic premise as Monty Python and the Holy Grail but less funny. The film does go out on a bit of a bang though as things do get pretty fun when the titular monster finally shows up at the end, that’s some good Gilliam there. Despite that ending though I’m not sure Gilliam was quite “there” yet when he made this and I’m not sure the movie really works as a whole despite some highlights. **1/2 out of Five

You're Next (2011)
Over the past decade, critics have been quick--and right--to point out that much of the innovation in filmmaking is happening in the horror space. Ari Aster and Robert Eggers have taken the mantle in recent years with The Witch, Hereditary, and Midsommar, but back to High Tension in 2003 the original Saw in 2004 and The Descent in 2005 you could see flashes of adept storytelling and camera work in horror films. I'd first heard of Adam Wingard in the run-up to his generally acclaimed reboot of Blair Witch in 2016, with most reviewers speaking highly of this movie and The Guest. I expected arthouse horror here, but what I got was a pleasant surprise of a movie loaded with dark comedy, nihilism, and the ever-present fear of containment.
Our movie opens with Erin (Sharni Vinson) accompinying her boyfriend Crispian (A.J. Bowen) to his family vacation home in the Ozarks for his parents' 35th anniversary. The initial feel is of a mumblecore farce; aside from a killer opening where we're treated to boobs two minutes in, the greatest sense of tension looks to be Crispian's overwhelming sense of smallness in his family. His parents don't respect his career and his oldest brother is a gigantic preppy asshole who seems content making quick snipes under his breath over the anniversary dinner. Eventually the entire family is in heated argument over the dinner table, escalating to the home-invasion thriller main plot marking its arrival.
The movie is peppered with character actors and directors who convey a sense of realism, even underneath the snippy asshole one-liners. Directors Ti West, Joe Swanberg, and Amy Seimetz are all younger members of the family, and the mother is horror stalwart Barbara Crampton. I appreciate that when the action gets going and the home invasion is afoot, the in-fighting doesn't entirely dissipate.
Anyone who knows these types of movies knows who will survive from the first 10-15 minutes, but the journey is great. From the demented Home Alone traps, to the multiple twists, to a truly inspired strobe sequence, the movie knows how to entertain and keeps the energy going nonstop for its breezy 94 minute runtime.
I was expecting a drudge of a film and got so, so much more. I'm now going to have to watch The Guest and Blair Witch.
B+. Hit the spot.

Just peeked the rotten tomatoes score and you can't stop me from watching it.
Are you concerned this guy is helming Godzilla vs Kong?

Just peeked the rotten tomatoes score and you can't stop me from watching it. Are you concerned this guy is helming Godzilla vs Kong? Lol. It has some slight moments, but it's mostly just a movie that substitutes loud foley for jump scares. As for Godzilla vs. Kong, dunno. I heard great things about Your Next and The Guest, but the only Wingard movies I've seen are Blair Witch and Death Note. Didn't like Blair Witch and Death Note...the manga/anime/Japanese live action movies are all better (though Willem Dafoe was inspired casting for Ryuk). But I don't want to be too judgmental before I see the stuff that people praise from him. And even still, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, while I enjoyed it, is Michael Dougherty's worst movie, so pre-judging based on past work seems silly to me.

Just looked up what other stuff Wingard might have done on Vudu. You're Next was on sale for five bucks, so why not? I wanted to watch it before GvK came out anyway.

True RomanceI did think the violence was excessive for excess's sake and could have been toned down.
You must be new to Quentin Tarantino.
