Sigh, so I foolishly assumed that 9 Souls would be available to rent either from the Playstation Store, Itunes, or my University Film Archive. It isn't, and I've seen the other three. Could I possibly have a new list? Feel free to put a bunch of recommendations to be safe. Thanks, Nilade. Also, Dooms. I know, I'm very late and am only now fixing this problem. I'm sorry. If a get a list from Nilade today and some of the recommendations can be rented digitally, I'll watch my film tonight.

Sometimes life wears you a little thin and finding 2 hours to sit down and watch a movie undisturbed is a tall order for me at this very moment. I'll get mine done, just maybe not today.

The Wailing (2016)
The Wailing is a 2016 South Korean horror film about a mysterious disease forcing victims to murderous urges which may have a supernatural background, and the detective trying to solve the mystery before the disease takes his young daughter. Some of those elements probably sound cliche on paper, but they don't feel like it in practice. Where the American version of this story would likely depend on high strings and jump scares, Na Hong-jin instead lets things build slowly and with minimal fanfare. The more overtly horrific scenes are used pretty sparingly, but they leave an impact when they hit.
The other thing that distinguishes The Wailing is its comedic streak. Though it doesn't seem like it at first, this film is loaded with "cringe" humour, as the characters awkwardly try and navigate their situation. This is most emphasized in the film's protagonist, whose a far cry from the grizzled policeman who usually leads this type of investigation. Rather, the dude's something of a bumbling clutz, socially awkward and professionally inept. It's only as circumstances become more dire that he starts to rise to the occasion.
There's a lot about The Wailing that I do like in theory, but in practice, a lot of the film's more unique ideas sort of backfired for me. I appreciate my horror taking a slower build, but I'd argue The Wailing stretched it too far. I'm not usually one to complain about runtimes, but I did feel the two and half hours here. The film loses a lot of its suspense by simply drawing things out too long, and Na Hong-jin is prone to some tedious tangents. Additionally, the film's humour was certainly unexpected, but some moments feel so goofy that any sense of terror tends to dissipate. The end result of all of this was a film whose elements interested me even if I don't think they actually work. Still, being interesting is something of worth and while I don't think The Wailing is all that successful, I certainly appreciated some of the film's imagery and creative scenes.

Leon Morin, Priest (1961) Compared to the other directors of the kind who tend to show up in the Criterion Collection I’ve always been a bit lukewarm on Jean-Pierre Melville. Melville’s filmography is divided into two pretty clear camps: “cool” noir riffs about French guys who wear trench coats and smoke a lot and more serious minded movies about the Nazi occupation and the resistance thereof. This movie would seem to fall into the latter category in that its indeed set in occupied France and deals with serious issues but it’s a bit lighter than something like Army of Shadows and it has a couple of new wavy touches here and there. I’ve certainly never known Melville to be too interested in spiritual angst in the way that someone like Robert Bresson and I’m not entirely sure that’s what he’s doing here either. Though named after a priest, the main character here is a woman named Emmanuelle Riva and her relationship with the titular priest played by Jean-Paul Belmondo who seems to be an almost platonic ideal of what a man of the cloth is supposed to be: confident but tolerant, patient but firm, unwavering but understanding of the world he lives in. The woman by contrast is a communistic atheist who at first goes to Morin to taunt him but begins to be fascinated with the discussions she has with him. Basically every time the two are talking in their chamber there’s a clear sexual undercurrent to their interactions. She clearly has a crush on him and he’s clearly aware of this and while this remains unconsummated a “will they or won’t they” vibe runs throughout. Perhaps what Melville is trying to do with this is establish that the line between seduction and evangelism is not so distinct. The movie is fairly talky and employs some very strange editing. I was interested by it but I can’t say that I was rapt with fascination by it, which tends to be my response to Melville’s other films but usually for different reasons.

Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story (2005)
Tristram Shandy has a unique premise which is what attracted me to it. It's a mockumentary starring Steve Coogan as actor Steve Coogan, but also with him in the role of Tristram Shandy from the real 18th century novel of the same name, but in a fake adaptation of it. I was unfamiliar with the novel, but it sounds like the complexity and non-linear storytelling of the novel has given it a reputation of being "unfilmable." With this in mind, it appears that the style of this movie is inspired by this burden, and is itself all over the place between film footage and behind-the-scenes footage.
Unfortunately, this directionless attitude to the filmmaking kind of left me lost for most of the movie. There are a few laugh-out-loud moments, and I did enjoy most of the squabbling among the filmmakers about how to make this bad adaptation work, but most of the time I was a bit bored. I did like the subtle nods here and there that seemed to suggest Steve Coogan never read the book while everyone else has.

I still owe my movie. Not to bore you with details but I've been working surprisingly long hours and to find 2 free hours with an infant on a weekend is sometimes difficult to say the least. I'm just going to burn the midnight oil this week and give it a whirl, I hate bringing up the rear.

TiMER
This really was something of a mixed bag for me. It's low-budget, indie sensibilities mean that despite its high-concept science fiction premise it already seems dated and even old fashioned, which is always a risk with near-future stories. E.g. the TiMER itself, which looks like a an elongated casio from the 90s.
This is all superficial, of course, and where the film excels is in the naturalistic, and very funny, writing and also the cast's delivery. Both leads and the support all deliver performances worthy of better direction and a bigger budget.
Maybe I'm being a little harsh on writer/director Jac Schaeffer given it was her debut, but i think writing is where her true talents lie. Checking her Wiki, I'm happy to see she's written the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake due out next year (entitled The Hustle), directed by The Thick Of It and Veep alumnus Chris Addison. She's also writing the Black Widow movie, so clearly the right people were similarly impressed with her work here.
All in all, this was a fun 90ish minutes that breezed by, and a film I'd recommend.

I'm actually surprised that J-Bone holds it in such high esteem. I feel there's a nostalgia element to it. Or he banged the Grip.

Timer and The Graduate (which came up a whole lot back when we were doing AFI rounds for whatever reason) might be the two movies that have been recommended the most in the history of the Film Club.

I watched TiMer too, I wish I had my review from the old boards. Not pouring over the original thread and saving my reviews is a big regret of mine. I think the movie of mine that people have picked the most is OSS 117: Lost in Rio. I think almost every enjoyed it for the most part.

It would probably be fun to join this. Though I doubt I'd be able to come up with a decent list of films you guys have never seen for the life of me.
And if I were to, I'd probably get kicked out of the thread because they'd be schlock.

I watched my film last night, but we had to bump our road trip to Vegas up a day to beat traffic, so review is still coming. I'll be back early Wednesday, as we're only going there for a friend's birthday dinner. I'll post then.
I'm in next round.
