In war, the poor fight for the interests of other people. Obviously, there are exceptions to that, like WWII, which Leone himself live through, but this movie was made in 1972, during Vietnam. I hadn't actually thought about Vietnam, but that connection makes a lot of sense and does add another layer of resonance. I remember you posting something about the movie and its themes of family over country in another thread.

That's not an unfair characterization of the Mexican revolution, which was basically a decade-long civil war in which a series new presidents from the landed aristocracy kept coming to power only to prove to be just as bad as their predecessors, leading to a new wave of fighting.

The Andromeda Strain (1971)“The Andromeda Strain” was Michael Chrichton’s first novel published under his own name (beforehand he published a number of dime novels under pseudonyms) and was something of an instant success and his first of many works to become a major motion picture. That film, which was directed by Robert Wise, didn’t exactly take the form of a mockumentary but did try to look like a sort of docu-drama which re-enacted a real event, albeit a real even that never actually happened. The film follows a group of scientists trying to find a cure for a disease after an outbreak and discover it to be of potentially alien origin. The film doesn’t seem to really show these scientists using technology that’s futuristic exactly so much as it shows them using technology that appears to be much too expensive to fit into the budget of the actual CDC. The underground bases in the film is a very interesting set and the film does a pretty good job of using actors who actually look like science professors rather than hot young movie stars. I also like how it’s the government’s over-abundance of caution that nearly kills everyone towards the end rather than its recklessness. If I have criticisms of it it’s that it feels a bit longer than it needed to be and also that some of the techniques used to make it feel like a docudrama like the split screen just feel rather dated. I probably got more out of Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion as far as fictional disease movies go, but it’s certainly better than Outbreak. ***1/2 out of Five

Mute
My film this round was Mute, a Netflix original mystery, with sci-fi elements, directed by Duncan Jones (Warcraft). The film follows Leo (Alexander Skarsgard), a mute bartender of Amish background, as he searches for his missing girlfriend, who also works at the same club as him, but appears to have gotten mixed up with the seedy patrons and mobsters that frequent their establishment. Along the way, he runs into such characters as Bill (Paul Rudd), a black market surgeon, his partner Ducky, a borderline pedophile with the same skillset as Bill, Marksim, the club owner who seems to be behind the scenes of everything that goes on, as well as various other shady characters.
I picked this movie before I realized Duncan Jones had directed it. I only know of him from Warcraft, which was a gorgeous mess of a film that, despite bad acting and a terrible script, took itself too seriously, which was unfortunate considering it payed much respect to the details and locations of the game that it was based on, and visually looked great. The latter can be said of Mute. The film looks great, taking place in an undefined near future that appears to be like something out of Bladerunner, except that it’s in a Berlin embraced with neon, drone delivery services, and robotic strippers. There’s a lot to look at, and Duncan manages to use these visual elements to carry the content of each scene. Thankfully, that’s all Mute has in common with Warcraft, as the acting and characters in this movie shine. Paul Rudd stands out as Bill, a military deserter who’s working as a black market surgeon for the mob in order to get forged documents so he can get away with his little girl. I found myself more intrigued by his character than I did with Leo, although their stories and paths seem to intertwine around each other until they ultimately intersect. I think that was my biggest problem with the film, which was the lack of interest in Leo’s quest. Every time it came back to him, the movie seemed to slow down, until it eventually wraps it up with an unsatisfying conclusion.
Overall, pretty good film, a lot to look at, cool characters, but, story wise, a little messy on the edges.
7/10

Sorry... The OutsiderThis one had been on my radar for a while now, so I was looking forward to finally seeing it. From the poster featuring Jared Leto holding a sword, I was expecting some kind of action-packed samurai epic but what I actually got was a (mostly) authentic and serious look at warring yakuza families in postwar Osaka, Japan. The opening 15 minutes set in a Japanese prison were heavily reminiscent of Bruce's self-imposed exile in Batman Begins, which made me think my initial assumptions might have been correct, but rather than take on a group of Japanese criminals singlehandedly with martial arts skills, Leto's Nick keeps his head down and manages to save a fellow inmate from death. His reward: release from prison thanks to the inmate's yakuza connections. What follows is a slow-burning, beautifully shot exploration of Nick's gradual acceptance into the "family", his forbidden relationship with the sister of one of his "brothers" and the rising tensions between two rival crime families that must, as always, come to a head by the film's conclusion. Playing a brooding gaijin that lets his actions speak louder than his words, Leto doesn't exactly hit the dizzying heights of performance he's capable of; his Japanese delivery, for example, tends to sound either forced or stilted, but his Japanese co-stars more than make up for it. At times gory, but never excessively so, and with a soundtrack that subtly complements the visuals only when necessary, The Outsider is an interesting little movie shrouded by an under-explored period of Japanese history. 7.5/10

There are a couple good-sounding movies in there. I'll go with Embrace of the Serpent with Mustang as my backup.
