All this time....you could've corrected this. It doesn't look like it's streaming for free. Tell you what, you pick that and I'll give you my Vudu password so you can check it out. It's on Showtime, which I get through Hulu, so it IS readily available.

Let's make the due date April 15th. The Wrong Guy (1997)IanTheCool (played by actress Dave Foley) arrives at the corporate offices of Canada’s largest board game manufacturer. He’s excited for a big promotion that ends up going to someone else. Enraged, he confronts his boss but finds his corpse instead. Ian doesn’t possess what one would consider intelligence, and so, he makes it seem like he was the murderer. This forces Ian to go into hiding, and following a few mishaps, he ends up working as a farmhand and bank teller for Jennifer Tilly and the dad from Freaks & Geeks. All is going well until the real killer shows up to get rid of some loose ends. If you enjoy laughing at other’s misfortunes, this is a solid cinematic achievement by David Steinberg, known better for a slew of 1990’s sitcoms. But if you’re more of a humanitarian, I still recommend to give it a shot. It’s silly, fun and occasionally clever. The characters might be a tad too dumb for those that don’t care for comedies (meaning most of y’all here), but this is based on a true story of Ian’s life, so it’s really more of a documentary. If you can enjoy Tiger King and 90 Day Fiancé, you can enjoy this too.

Persona (1966)
It's hard to figure out where to even begin with this one. True to the hype, to even attempt to try and decipher this thing after a first viewing feels like a fool's errand, but I at least can buy into/cling onto the reading that this is about dissociative identity disorder and about a woman attempting to come to terms with her fractured mind. Beyond that...I'll leave it to film buffs much more learned than me to dissect this film. How did I feel about it overall, though? Honestly, for as weird and experimental this film can get, I can't deny that I found myself fairly caught up in it, even still. This film just has a hypnotic effect that makes it hard to look away from, even when you're not quite sure what to make of it all -- which is the vast majority of it. Just from the opening five minutes alone, this thing draws you in on a "Whaaaaat am I watching...?" sort of way, though that feeling really never lets up through the rest of the movie. Even if it's to a slightly lesser degree than those opening minutes. But the key here is Ingmar Bergman's execution. Because even though this is an incredibly odd film stylistically, Bergman still keeps things interesting to watch in some form (the film is beautifully photographed a lot of the time, too), and the same goes for the two main actresses. Persona is unquestionably extremely arthouse, but there's at least a level of intrigue here to keep it from veering into being inaccessible. Even as I sat down to watch it, I wasn't sure what to expect, but what I got surprised me in a good way.

P.S. I might not necessarily be done yet with this round...

When Doomsday said April 19th, he really meant March 2nd. We’re ready for the next round, sir. There’s people that haven’t watched the Wrong Guy yet.

The version on YouTube in glorious VHS quality? Of course. Nothing but the best for the Citizen Kane of Canada.

P.S. I might not necessarily be done yet with this round... Glad you liked it. You're definitely right that, for as capital A-Art Film as Persona is, it's a shockingly easy watch even if it doesn't all make sense.

Last Round:
Balloon (2018) Hollywood has a pretty long tradition of remaking foreign films but recently there’s been something of a trend of foreign filmmakers making “remakes” of Hollywood films, or perhaps more accurately making more authentic adaptations of local stories that had previously been made by Hollywood during an era where they were the only ones with the funds to make such projects. The recent German All Quiet on the Western Front is a good example of this, as is Society of the Snow but one movie that was perhaps ahead of the trend was the 2018 German film Balloon, which was the second film adaptation of the Strelzyk and Wetzel families’ escape from East Germany via homemade hot air balloon in 1979. That story had previously been brought to film by none other than Disney in the 1982 film Night Crossing. I haven’t seen that film but I can see why Disney would be interested in the film: it presents an “inspiring” story of escaping from evil communists and posits this escape as something of a project for the whole family. This recent German version is presumably more culturally accurate but I wouldn’t call this a particularly hard hitting or artistic adaptation itself: I can definitely still kind of see the DNA of an uplifting Disney movie under its surface… but maybe that just kind of what this story invites. The movie does rather notably not put too much effort into explaining why these people are unhappy in East Germany beyond the fact that it seems like quite the police state, I can definitely see an American movie in 1982 feeling more of a responsibility there. The more recent movie this reminds me of is actually Argo, which is another “escape from a hostile country” movie that probably amps up the suspense in the finale a bit more than what happened in real life. This one isn’t about a clever agent helping them though; it’s just them acting on their own accord to make it over the border and the process of seeing them do that is interesting to be sure. *** out of Five
This Round:
The Valley of the Dolls (1967) I hadn’t seen Valley of the Dolls before now but I had seen its pseudo-sequel/spoof Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. I don’t think the two movies really have that much to do with each other but while watching the original movie I could kind of see why Russ Meyer would have been inspired to make it. I can just see him watching the movie and thinking “this has all the makings of an exploitation movie but they never actually show anybody’s tits… what’s up with that?” Of course what’s up with that is that this was actually a huge studio movie that has a lot of money put behind it despite its source material being this lurid book that was viewed as being trash and normally wouldn’t dream of having an adaptation this expensive if not for the fact that it sold a gazillion copies. In that sense this was the 50 Shades of Gray of its time, but that comparison maybe sells it a bit short as the basic filmmaking here isn’t half bad. The main performances here are decent and there’s certainly a charge to seeing Sharon Tate on screen, but some of the side characters aren’t great and its depiction of addiction does not seem terribly authentic. The bigger problem here is just a bland problem with story structure, it’s about three not very related stories that don’t really blend together that great. I wouldn’t call this movie “good” but I’m glad I saw it just the same, it’s an interesting relic of a strange cultural phenomenon that’s worth knowing about. **1/2 out of Five

Thanks to MovieBuff801, I spent $5.99 on a monthly subscription to Peacock. 99.9% of America spent $5.99 on a Kansas City Chiefs game. I was the 0.01% that spent that much on the Holdovers. I also watched Ted: The Series. That show is a masterpiece. Thank you, MovieBuff801. MovieBuff801 is being a little bitch and won’t watch X-Men ‘92 with me. It’s on Disney Plus if anyone is interested. I’m seven episodes in. The first two are the Sentinel ones. Jubilee, the girl that shoots fireworks, is reported to the Mutant Registration Program. The Sentinels are sent after her and the X-Men have to rescue her. Gambit nicknames her, Petite. Homeboy flirts with anyone. I dozed off during the Magneto episodes (three and four). Episode five features the Morlocks. Cyclops and Jean are attacked while on a date. Wolverine tries to rescue them and gets his feelings hurt. He runs off to Canada (being a bitch like MovieBuff801) which leads to a Wolverine/Sabertooth in Canada episode (number six). Episode seven is the one in Genosha, the island where mutants are forced into slavery. Episode eight features the Juggernaut. Is it the famous, “I’m the Juggernaut, bitch” episode? Maybe. Mayyybe. Also, checkout Ted on Peacock.

I watched X-Man '92 recently... that show does not really hold up. It's what happens when you directly translate 90s comic books in all their messiness directly to the screen.

I get what you mean. Some of it is needlessly convoluted… but the overarching plot is easy to follow. They do the Sentinels and Days of Future Past and tie it into Senator Kelly and his campaign against mutants. MovieBuff doesn’t have the time to go through the 90’s animated series. I’ll leave this one to you. At least watch Ted. $5.99. Worth it.

I saw that American Cinematheque is showing Harakiri at the Egyptian in Hollywood. I was about to fly out PG Cooper because I know he's never watched it but my plans were destroyed when I saw that it's on the same date as my wife's birthday. She's not much of a movie fan, even less of an old movie fan and even less of an old foreign movie fan so I know that's not how she would like to spend her evening. But hopefully Coop is able to fly out for it, I think he would really like the movie.
