and (hot take) better songs. Oh yeah 100% agreed, this movie reminded me just how bland a lot of RHPS's songs are.

Pretty Woman (1990)
When it comes to movies about a sex worker which star Richard Gere and Héctor Elizondo, Pretty Woman is no American Gigolo.
There are a number of thematic issues I could take with Pretty Woman. Despite technically being released in the Bush administration, this is peak Reaganite cinema, a celebration of consumerism and wealth which redeems crass capitalists with trite concessions to salt of the earth values of hard work. The film's snide paternal attitude, with Gere educating Julie Roberts on the proper ways to behave, is part and parcel with Pygmalion style stories so I suppose I shouldn't object to that too much, but that Pretty Woman immerses itself in the world of sex work invites greater scrutiny. Roberts is not the least bit believable as a streetwalker in either style or temperament but the bigger issues are the film's writing and direction, which do not feel the least bit insightful about sex work and instead draw from an extremely sheltered perspective, the kind of person for whom joking about hookers is the height of edge.
I could complain about all that, but the real Achilles heel is that Pretty Woman is a romantic comedy that I did not find particularly romantic or funny. Don't think I laughed once in fact, and the unequal power dynamics of the Pygmalion narrative prevent a lot of the charm from watching a couple fall in love. That leaves the film with little more than the sexual charisma and appeal of the stars, which is admittedly not insubstantial, but it's not nearly enough to carry a movie
D+
In for next round. Actually early for once too.

The Wrong Guy (1997) Confession: I don’t think I’ve watched a single episode of the 90s sketch comedy series The Kids in the Hall and may well have never seen a single sketch from it in its entirety. I don’t know why, I guess the reruns were just never put in my face. I do think I got the gist of comedian Dave Foley’s shtick pretty quickly with this movie though as he’s playing a sort of pampered spaz who over-reacts to things. The film is ostensibly supposed to be a parody of the works of Alfred Hitchcock, but more in terms of plot structure than from individual references like what we got out of Mel Brooks’ High Anxiety. The film looks at a guy who finds himself in a compromising position where it appears that he’s murdered someone and proceeds to go on the lamb, but unbeknownst to him the police already know who the real killer is and aren’t pursuing him, so he’s kind of fleeing for nothing. That idea of a guy going “off the radar” out of paranoia is amusing but the movie never quite commits to it and still ends up having him interacting with the police and the real killer over and over again. That was a little disappointing, but perhaps inevitable given that they need to give this guy something to do through the whole movie. Occasionally the movie does reach for some more direct parodies like the finale on a statue of liberty replica, but most of the movie could be understood by those who don’t know the references, which is probably to the film’s credit. The whole thing did start to get a bit old by the end however, which is a problem given that the movie is not very long. You can kind of tell that the people who made it have more of a background in sketch comedy because it does kind of have that “sketches strung together” feel. It’s a movie I was amused enough by, but probably not one I’ll be remembering too long. *** out of Five

This man didn’t watch Newsradio. Correct Your loss for missing easily the best sitcom of the 90s.

Your loss for missing easily the best sitcom of the 90s. For the next round, instead of a movie, Dracula should watch 4 episodes of Newsradio. Handpicked by Skink.
