I have an Iron Monkey Blu-Ray rented from the video store and will likely watch it in the next three days. Ian and I record tonight and I'm introducing a screening of Head at my local theater tomorrow night though so we'll see.

I watched Josey Wales on Sunday. Review coming soon, but to summarize, I really liked it. It's a more meditative, character-driven take on the Western that feels like an interesting predecessor of sorts to what Eastwood would later do with Unforgiven, and I dug it.

Iron Monkey
Iron Monkey is a Robin Hood-esque tale of a noble warrior who steals from the rich and redistributes food and money to the impoverished and poor in the town. The film was directed by famed martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping and the action here is indeed the best part. Fight scenes in Iron Monkey are a complete blast, fast-paced bits of kung-fu goodness with supernaturally gifted martial artists either laying waste to legions of goons or going mano a mano with each other. Action is generally light and breezy, with just enough hints of graphic violence to punctuate danger when necessary. The actual story to string all these fights together is a perfectly serviceable fable, if a bit simplistic. All the heroes are one-dimensional paragons of good and all the villains completely vile and horrible. The film is also arguably too breezy. The main antagonist is such an obvious boob that there's very little tension or threat. It's very telling that the movie needs to introduce a new heavy in act three to serve as the final boss.
Overall, I'd say Iron Monkey is more firmly "good" than it is "great", but I also should stress that I had a ton of fun with this movie. The action sings and the film is also laugh out loud funny at many points. Very enjoyable and entertaining.
B
In for next round.

Getting ready to head back to work at the beginning of February after being off for eight months while I recovered. I'll probably sit a round out while I get back in the groove of things, but I'll jump back in the round after.

Figures in a Landscape (1970) I’ve always been fascinated by the films of the 70s and the “New Hollywood” era and am always fascinated whenever I find one that I hadn’t really heard of and didn’t go down as a classic in the same way. This one is actually British rather than Hollywood in origin but it kind of feels apiece with that whole movement and also features a pretty cool casting coup in its pairing of Robert Shaw and Malcolm McDowell while both were in their prime. The film itself is something of an experimental work in that it starts right in the middle of things mid-adventure without really explaining who our two protagonists are, how they got where they were… or even when and where we even are. The two are being chased through some sort of rural area by a helicopter, but we aren’t privy to what they did to get on the wrong side of these forces or who the forces even are. That’s an interesting experimental element, but what really makes the film stand out more is some rather basic aesthetic wins: the landscapes in the movie look really good (it was shot in the Andalusian region of Spain) and there’s some pretty decent action to be found in it. It’s a strong visual experience though it’s intentionally Spartan storytelling definitely won’t be for everyone and I maybe would have liked it to have revealed at least a little bit more about these guys by the ending. ***1/2 out of Five

Glad you enjoyed it. I came across it from all people Eric Vespe, formerly Quint on AICN. He talks about Robert Shaw's performance a lot on the Kingcast.
I know I'm behind, will try and get mine watched earlier during this work week.

The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
The words 'Clint Eastwood' and 'Western' have mostly been synonymous with each other for a vast number of years, with 1992's Unforgiven often serving as the film where both reached their peak for each other. Although having now seen The Outlaw Josey Wales, I think I can say that this film walked so that Unforgiven could run. That's not to say that this film is a shadow in any sense -- on the contrary, it's a very strong piece of work -- it just shares similar thematic and dramatic building blocks that Eastwood would go on to hone. This definitely has the expected hallmarks of the more exciting, shoot-em-up brand of Westerns, but at its core, The Outlaw Josey Wales is a much more character-driven piece than the spaghetti westerns that Eastwood also built his image on. And it's all the better for it. The plot description for this movie details the main character going on a quest to avenge his murdered family -- which the movie opens with -- and that created certain expectations for me. Plus, the first half hour to forty-five minutes have a lot of the action you would expect in a movie like this. But I was pleasantly surprised when the movie began to slow down and delve into the characters more, allowing for a more meditative approach on the genre, something that seems like a bit of fresh air considering what the genre had mainly been like up until this point. The film is also able to follow through on that approach by offering up a cast of interesting characters, a fairly gripping mood/atmosphere and effectively visceral bursts of violence. Plus, Eastwood's performance is dramatically compelling and satisfying itself and helps hold everything together well. The Outlaw Josey Wales is a revisionist Western before revisionist Westerns seemed to be in-style, and it has the material to back itself up. A very pleasant surprise.

Coop: Home Alone 2: Lost in New York Boudu Saved from Drowning The Ox-Bow Incident One, Two, Three Hmmm, Boudu Saved from Drowning offers a comedy of manners, but Home Alone 2 offers the comedy of a man being hit in the groin. Tough call but I'll give Renoir the edge. For you: F for FakeTenetFanny and AlexanderThe Great SilenceWatership Down (fun one for the kids)
