The Lost Daughter (2021)
I remember The Lost Daughter coming out at the tail-end of last year and receiving lots of acclaim, particularly for Olivia Colman, who it's starting to seem like she can just sneeze and get an Oscar nomination. And it would still be well-deserved. So, true to form, she is indeed fantastic here. In this, an adaptation of a 2006 novel of the same name by Elena Ferrente, Colman plays Leda Caruso, a university professor vacationing in Greece who becomes fascinated by a young mother with a very young daughter, who are also vacationing in the same small city with their extended family. From there, the film takes the bent of a full-on psychological drama as it uses this starting point to delve into Leda's own past as a mother, alternating between the present and the past (where the younger Leda is played by Jessie Buckley) as events unfold. The film has a pretty basic and loose plot, all told, but I do have to give it credit for the fact that it manages to make that work to its advantage. This also happens to be the directorial debut of Maggie Gyllenhaal, who adapted the screenplay as well. And something that I can definitely say for Gyllenhaal as a director and general storyteller is that she displays a sure and confident hand in both departments. Again, this isn't a movie that's really driven by plot, yet it always manages to stay interesting to watch. And I believe that's in large part due to Gyllenhaal's command of tone and whatnot. She always keeps the movie clipping along at a good pace and the drama at a pretty engaging level. Not to mention that she has actors like Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson and Ed Harris, all of whom deliver strong work. But Colman and Buckley in particular really drive home Gyllenhaal's intent to portray complicated and imperfect characters through the lens of motherhood, and I'd say both of them are absolutely worthy of the praise they've already gotten for this film. That said, I think The Lost Daughter falls short of being considered great. I generally found the film's deliberate pace and mysterious tone engaging, yet felt it could've been tightened up some here and there. And while the "climax" of sorts hits well, I'm not really sure what I thought about the actual ending. Still, this is a strong and competent piece of work worth celebrating, and I'd be interested to see where Maggie Gyllenhaal goes from here as a director.

P.S. if you can, make sure your Blind Spots post is completely up to date.

It's on my list of things to do. One day, some day.
I was going to say Tenet just because but I remember you giving Perfect Blue a great score. I might try to do that.

I won't be able to get to it until January, but I think I'll do Iron Monkey. That looks like fun.

Perfect Blue
I've probably posted in this thread several times that anime is not my thing. I've tried to get into it, I watched some of the heavy hitters with an open mind and by and large none of them connected with me. I finally watched Akira a while back which I enjoyed more than I thought I would even though I felt it went off the rails a bit. After seeing people here previously talk about how much they enjoyed Perfect Blue I thought I would dip my toe back into the anime pool. I knew nothing about the film other than it was a late 90s anime but I thought the film club would be as good a time as any to finally throw my hat back in the ring and expose myself to this genre that has never really agreed with me.
Perfect Blue centers on Mima, a former Japanese pop star who quits her music group to break into acting. She soon discovers a website dedicated to her that writes in the first person as though she's the author yet speaks of very personal and intimate details of her life. She finds her way into a bit part on a show Double Bind but her part begins to grow and take shape. As her role grows though so do the asks to do more risque scenes. Soon she starts experiencing what she thinks are hallucinations and at the same time people around her are being viciously murdered. Her grip on reality starts to crumble as she doubts her own sanity and questions everything surrounding her and her new lifestyle.
To be honest I had to do a few double-takes which I don't feel are entirely my fault. It took me a minute to figure out the twist that was going on but once that settled in I was having a tough time tracing back exactly how all these different hallucinatory threads connected or how they made sense in relation to the final reveal. Granted the confusion lends itself to Mima's state of mind and that is one of the qualities of the movie; you wonder what's real just as much as Mima does. It adds to the intensity of the film while you watch and you wonder whether or not what you're seeing is real or just a piece of a fictional puzzle that she's playing. Overall this was another effective and engrossing anime film that I would like to see more of. Maybe it's the highly fantastical ones that turn me off for some reason but this one stood apart for me, perhaps because it's still somewhat grounded in reality while taking on mature and heavy themes. I know there's a wall between me and anime that still has yet to come down but movies like Perfect Blue do a good job in opening up my curiosity to the genre even more.
B+ so says Doomsday

Bonnie and Clyde
The film starts out with Bonnie (Faye Dunaway) gazing out of her window when she witnesses a man, Clyde (Warren Beatty), trying to steal her mother's car. After she confronts him, before they even exchange names, she challenges him to rob a bank. Thus begins the story of Bonnie and Clyde. They are soon joined by a gas station attendant, C.W. Moss (Michael J. Pollard), who becomes their getaway driver, and eventually Clyde's older brother Buck (Gene Hackman) and his wife. With the Barrow Gang complete, they soon become celebrities. Meanwhile, the law is hot on their trail and closing in fast.
In “Bonnie and Clyde”, directed by Arthur Penn, the duo is portrayed as misunderstood youths, and it works. They are perceived as sympathetic outlaws who are merely just trying to get their share of the American dream. The film comes off as almost light-hearted with certain scenes sped up with zany music playing during the robberies and chases until you get the reminder that these kids were cold-blooded killers. There's a point near the end of the film where Bonnie expresses herself in a poem called "The Story of Bonnie and Clyde”. It was written in 1934, the year their crime spree came to an end. Until that point, the word “impotent” is never used although Clyde is clearly that, as he wards off all of Bonnie's advances. This seems to break the spell. Unfortunately, the pair would soon go down in a hail of bullets that same year.
I really enjoyed “Bonnie and Clyde”. I never followed them prior, so I couldn't distinguish what was real or what was added for dramatic purposes. Nevertheless, I had a great time.
8/10
