Nice. First person to draw a Doomsday round in 2023... you know what to do.
BTW, this is actually the first of the inter-quel trilogy as it takes place after 2 Fast 2 Furious but before Tokyo Drift (because they wanted to bring Sung Kang back even though his character died in Tokyo Drift... or did he?). Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6 are also set before Tokyo Drift (a movie filled with flip phones). We don't catch up to the present until Furious 7.

Perfect Blue (1997)
I sat down to watch Perfect Blue knowing only the most basic of information about it, and I think that served me very well, because it added to the overall effectiveness of the experience for me with this film. Up until now, my experience with anime features has mostly been about either hopeful or fantastical stories, however there have been the odd ones like Akira and Princess Mononoke that have shown me just how adult they can get. But if the latter two films were akin to me dipping my toe into that sort of pond, then Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue is the same as me doing a cannonball into it. I think I’m on fairly safe ground with myself when I say that Perfect Blue may have already skyrocketed to rank amongst some of the most effective and overall best animated movies I’ve ever seen. As I’ve already said, once the movie started getting into its plot and letting it unfold, the sheer dizzying power of it overtook me. My previous perception of anime films was largely one of overall hope and pop and happy characters and bright colors, but Perfect Blue pretty much just strips that all away to show that this medium, like other heavyhitters before it, can be used to tell some truly psychologically affecting stories. One can look at the plot and themes of this film and draw obvious comparisons with Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, especially in the way both films deal with the perception of reality and a female lead character struggling to justify her place in a specific section of society. And it says something about Perfect Blue that the movie is easily able to go toe-to-toe with Black Swan in terms of its gradually suffocating and intense psychological horror. Because make no mistake, this is a true psychological horror thriller, and the animation medium actually serves to make it that much more hard-hitting. At least, for me it did. The movie is effectively able to disarm you at first with its slow-burn beginning, but once main character Mima starts gradually tumbling down the rabbit hole of madness, so then, do we. That’s because Satoshi Kon’s filmmaking is vividly able to disorient us and cause us to question what’s real and what isn’t, right alongside Mima. Not to get too much into it for those who haven’t seen it, but the way Satoshi Kon plays around with scenes themselves, transitions between each, etc. truly capture a WTF-worthy quality that showcases just how much of an iron grip he has on his storytelling here. Also to that effect, when the film begins to embrace a more horror/thriller angle, the results are genuinely disturbing and suspenseful and constantly had me guessing what was going to happen next. And yet, beneath all of that expertly-crafted genre window dressing, the movie legitimately does have impactful things to say about a life of stardom and even social media – an especially impressive feat for the latter, considering this came out in 1997. The only thing that sticks out as questionable to me is the revelation at the end, specifically if it works thematically with the rest of the film or not and if it may detract from further viewings once you know it. But still, Perfect Blue struck me as a massively riveting film, one whose impact I can already tell will linger with me for a while.

This Happy Breed (1944) David Lean will forever be immortal for having made The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia, there’s no contesting that, and Doctor Zhivago is pretty cool too. Lean did however have a pretty established career leading up to that and in certain circles you’ll occasionally hear the semi-contrarian opinion that his earlier films are every bit as good if not better than his epics and I simply cannot get behind that. I certainly don’t dislike early Lean, in fact certain movies like Brief Encounter are indeed classics, but I don’t really love early Lean… in a lot of ways the pre-1957 David Lean just kind of feels like a standard British Prestige filmmaker not terribly distinct from several other directors who did not go on to make some of the greatest films of all time once given the resources to do so. This Happy Breed is kind of an example of what I’m talking about, it’s an appealing drama of its time but not exactly what I would peg as the work of a master. The film basically follows a family in interwar England as they react to the various events of the era and fight about politics along the way. Sort of an “All in the Family” meets Cavalcade. I was interested in some of the history it covered but was not necessarily enthralled but the specific characters presented here. It was an interesting enough watch but probably not a movie I’m ever going to come back to. *** out of Five

Alright, Nilade, let me know what streaming services you have or if you're okay putting down $3.99 or so for a digital rental, etc.

At least four viable easy to obtain choices there: Heavy Metal, Roadgames, Petite Maman, and Forty Guns. Tell you what, you pick which of those four you want me to watch and I'll abide by the choice.

That's a lot of pressure. Heavy Metal is perhaps the one you're least likely to enjoy given it's both trashy and shoddy, even if I think it's very entertaining and fun and absolutely worth a look. Petite Maman is arguably a 2022 release and worth checking out before year-end honours, but it's also deliberately much smaller and lower stakes than Portrait of a Lady of Fire. I love Forty Guns but I also assumed it'd be an easy winner when I recommended it to Doomsday but he was kind of cold on it so maybe I'm alone on that one. With that in mind, Roadgames might be the safest bet. So yeah, go Roadgames.
