Smaller round this time. For anyone who owes a movie and finds themselves feeling ill or in extreme pain, that would be my voodoo doll doing its magic. There's only one way to get it to stop. You know what it is. donny hasn't been active in a couple weeks but if you see this and want in just say the word. Round 224Dracula - Doomsday PG Cooper - PhantomKnightLet's go for November 21st as a due date but you guys are usually some of the faster ones, if we can get them in earlier we can start the next round sooner.

I'm open to things that aren't on streaming. I have seen all of those except Sergeant Rutledge though and that doesn't look like the easiest option to find, would you mind giving me a few more choices? I'll have a list for you shortly.

You sonofa... I'm conflicted. I know I said I'd watch a Fast and Furious movie every year and this is the one I would be on next. At the same time I'd rather watch a legitimately good movie. Maybe I'll see if I can pick two from your list this time, Rome Open City has been on my list for a while.

For what it's worth, Fast and Furious is the last of the really "meh" F&F movies. Get through that and the rest of them pick up a lot of steam.

Will probably roll with This Happy Breed. I'll get around to The Gray Man eventually, but, I have a bunch of dumb self imposed rules about when and in what order I see new 2022 movies.

PG Cooper, just double-checking: is a movie's easy access/availability on streaming important to you, or can you roll with whatever avenues to get access to them?

I must have just assumed that you had seen This Happy Breed which is probably why I never recommended it before. Even today I was looking at your Letterboxd and thought 'I'll put this on his list but there's no way he hasn't seen it.' But I think you'll enjoy it, it's hard to go wrong with David Lean.

Given I'm in Canada checking for streaming options might be a pain on your part. I'd say just put together a list and I'll let you know if I run into issues.

Fast and Furious (2009, the fourth one)
I've got to hand it to Dracula, at least he's keeping me honest. A couple years ago I said in another thread, partially/mostly/entirely in jest, that I would watch a Fast and Furious movie once a year or something to that effect. I had seen the first already, watched #2 in 2020, #3 in 2021 and more or less forgot about my promise and was hoping everyone else had too. Well, here's Dracula coming in hot with #4, Fast and Furious. I knew what I had to do. With some reluctance I turned on Fast and Furious however I was also a bit curious if this would be the movie to take us down the path that I now see in the trailers; insane, ludicrous stunts that are in no way grounded in physics, reality, and least of all intelligence.
Alright, where to begin? Released 3 years after Tokyo Drift, Fast and Furious was a very apparent attempt to right the ship by pairing Vin Diesel back up with Ryan Walker. We open with Dominic Toretto and his gang hijacking a fuel truck. Honestly, this is a pretty cool chase and up until the very silly chase climax with Dom timing the drive under the exploding gas tank, I was having a good time watching it. Afterward we find out that Dom's girlfriend Letty was murdered by a gang of drug dealers and Dom hits the road seeking revenge. In the meantime, Brian O'Connor has traded in his oversized t-shirts and Vans shoes for a suit because he's in the FBI now. Yup, the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Hey, if Johnny Utah can be a fed, why can't Brian? Evidently the same gang that killed Letty is in the FBI's crosshairs so Dom and Brian go undercover so they can drive for the cartel. Wait, wasn't that the same plot as 2 Fast 2 Furious? They infiltrate the gang, Gal Godot shows up, Dom turns her down because he's a complete moron, they go through chases in miles-long underground tunnels back and forth across the US/Mexican border and they finally nab the bad guy, all after Brian put his t-shirts and Vans shoes back on. Dom is arrested though and gets a 25 years to life stretch. Poor guy. But hey, the movie ends on Brian and the gang on their way to break him out of his prison bus. Talk about cliffhanger!
Where Fast and 4ious (why didn't they go with that as a title) gets credit is for at least trying to make a halfway decent movie and this is certainly a halfway decent movie. It's easily better than the last two installments from top to bottom because it at least makes an attempt to do something. Sure, it's not very well written, it certainly doesn't cover any new ground and Dom and Brian's characters act like they're picking up right where they left off instead of 5 years after last seeing each other. It has stock lines that are ripped right out of Screenwriting For Dummies like 'Maybe you're the bad guy pretending to be the good guy' and the always inspired 'You and I, we aren't so different.' But it's still a breezy, for the most part entertaining flick that doesn't plunge too far into the absurd, although it often comes close. While it's nothing groundbreaking and is mostly by the numbers it's definitely an enormous step up from the two previous movies in the franchise and as cliche as it sounds, I wasn't bored and that always counts for something.
