Also…bit of a peek behind the curtain: not everything I’ll be reviewing for 31 Days of Halloween will be things I watch actually in October. Just like I did last year, I’ve already watched/reviewed some of the films I’ve picked out. That’s mainly to lessen the pressure of the time crunch somewhat.
So, yeah, I’ll have time.

This Island Earth
On the one hand, this is exactly the kind of dopey sci-fi movie you're not surprised to here was featured on Mystery Science Theater. It has a loose plot, sluggish pacing, and some very stiff acting. On the other hand, this movie is actually kind of good. The special effects are generally quite neat and charming and the movie is especially entertaining when we get to Metaluna and all sorts of alien chaos breaks out. The story goes that the producers were dissatisfied with initial director Joseph M. Newman and brought in Jack Arnold, a king of sci-fi B movies. I'm glad they did because the results are pretty fun. I really like the design of the aliens. Not surprised to see that look has been referenced and featured elsewhere. This is definitely an acquired taste and not a movie I'd necessarily recommend widely but I certainly had a good time with it.
