Cool, glad you mostly enjoyed it. I'm not wild about Frances Ha either but for whatever reason I really liked Girlfriends. I also know Kubrick quite liked it for whatever that's worth.

Kubrick rarely commented on contemporary movies he liked and when he did they tended to be random stuff that's nothing like his own work. He was a huge Woody Allen fan, for example, largely because he admired that Allen could crank out a movie a year rather than toiling for years on perfect composition.

If you had to guess what do you think he liked about Girlfriends? It's never easy to guess what was in that guy's head, but I imagine it was similar to what he saw in Allen's films, an ability to express a story like that without all the same planning and care. It's a movie he probably couldn't make himself in that way, his own style would have suffocated it. This is what he said in the interview where he praised it:

One thing about Woody Allen that I can't decide whether is good or bad is that he doesn't really go heavy into details that he doesn't feel are entirely relevant to the story. For example most of his characters are actors, writers, comedians, something he can relate to but whenever he has a character doing something else, instead of delving into that profession and lifestyle Allen mostly glosses over details most other filmmakers would study quite heavily. I think it was Blue Jasmine where Alec Baldwin was 'in real estate' and 'defrauded some people' and that's about as much as you ever hear about it, not what kind of real estate, not how he defrauded anyone, no board room meetings or anything. In Match Point Jonathan Rhys Meyers works at some big time family company doing something or other, it's never really explained. Whether or not that helps a movie I guess depends on your taste.

Well, it depends on the movie. Blue Jasmine isn't about real estate fraud, it's about a woman unable to reconcile here high society identity with her current (relative) poverty and Match Point isn't about industry, it's about homicidal greed, jealousy, and the role luck plays in people's lives. Delving too deep into the details can be a distraction. Notably those are some of Allen's heavier films, movies where he's taking more of a comedic approach might make bigger diversions into the day to day lives of his characters in order to find some jokes to make.

Yeah I get it and going too hard in another direction can be a distraction like you said. Sometimes though a few extra details can help add to a character. So Rhys Meyers married into a big shot position, but what is it that he and his family do exactly, or even generally? Alec Baldwin is getting arrested but what for? It doesn't need to be a whole side plot but sometimes those details can help. I felt that those sparse details usually serve Allen pretty well but here and there it makes me think that maybe he could add just a bit more. A nitpick I know.

It has been over fifteen years since I've seen Match Point so I can't speak too much for that one but... I don't think it's too hard to connect the dots on how a shady businessman might have been in trouble in the backstory of a movie set in 2013... it's clearly an allusion to the 2008 financial crises and he was likely some sort of Bernie Madoff type.

Time Bandits
This movie is ultimately one where the plot doesn't really matter that much. The kid's a stand-in for boyish wonder, and often when he's shunted from locale to locale (with or without the six dwarves), he doesn't spend much time there. What it does excel at is feeling very lived-in. Director Terry Gilliam and his crew stretch practical effects and sets to their early 80s limit, and every bit of dialogue feels natural if irreverent. There's a lot of good Monty Python-esque humor in there, and its the type of movie i would have absolutely adored if i watched it for the first time when i was younger.
Ian Holm and David Warner steal every scene that they're in.
7/10

If you're going to sully the image of Alec Baldwin, the national face of temperance and sophistication, I demand an explanation.

Finally sitting down to watch Ran. It's pretty damn good! Just finished it. I need to collect my thoughts some, but my initial reaction is it's my favorite Kurosawa movie I've seen thus far.

I watched my film this afternoon. Wasn't the one I committed to, but it was on the list. Enjoyed it and will post my review Monday night.

To say I’m disappointed is a massive understatement. I still might watch it this week as a bonus review. I just happened to be on Netflix yesterday and the other option popped up right in front of me. So much more convenient than having to switch apps on the TV.

So just a thought, I'm heading out of town on Friday morning for a few days. If we get a couple more reviews in between now and tomorrow night I'll throw up a new round so people can get the ball rolling on their picks over the long weekend.
Who's in for next round?

I'll be out of town for a few days, too, starting Saturday, but I'll get my Ran review up before then.
In for the next round, though.
