This discourse made me more excited than ever to watch something with Kirk Cameron since I was 6 and Growing Pains was on. Yes, so Fireproof for you. Let me know if you have trouble finding it and I'll find something else equally worthy. And Whedon's Justice League for me.

Christian movies are all over the place, and Fireproof is a high profile one. I could waltz down to Walmart right now and buy the DVD for 5 bucks then send it to key grandma if I needed to. I'll try to have Ian's list this afternoon.

Beyond the Hills, A Ghost Story, and Mustang are all available through streaming to me. I also had no idea Mustang was on the Criterion Chanel so I appreciate just learning that. Not sure which one I'll watch yet. I know my partner was interested in A Ghost Story too so that one might be the easiest.

That's a slow one, but stick with it and it gets really rewarding in the second half. From your list I'll probably do The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum depending on some availability logistics.

Joss Whedon's Justice League
Where to even begin? I suppose at the very beginning. Man of Steel I am well aware has its fans and they will go to bat for it, that's fine. I am certainly not one of them, I found it a tedious, soulless, obnoxious bore that portrays many of the negative traits of contemporary mainstream Hollywood films. It's alright if you enjoyed it, different strokes however the franchise that initially got off to a bumpy start has really only barreled downhill which is something I think everyone can agree on. For me though the modern DCEU never sat at these great heights nor were they quality cinema. Because of my disdain for Man of Steel and the negative word of mouth that pretty much every other DCEU film received with the exception of Wonder Woman I never rushed out to see any of them. I finally caught up to Batman v. Superman on blu-ray (a title I never really understood, is it 'Batman versus Superman' or 'Batman VEE Superman?' Because I've heard both. And why not just call it 'Dawn of Justice?' Or 'Batman and Superman?' Or literally anything else). Truth be told I didn't like or even really dislike Batman v. Superman. It was nothing, I felt nothing, I recognized the stupidity and silliness of the movie, the casting, the creative choices and wrote it all off thinking 'yeah, what did I or anyone else expect?' I actually don't remember all that much about it as it's been 4 or 5 years since I've seen it but I never had the simmering hatred that many people have for the movie because my expectations were already as low as they could possibly go. Suicide Squad is legitimately one of the worst movies I've ever seen and the less said about that 'film' the better. Wonder Woman was fine and managed to clear the incredibly low bar that was set for it and I never watched Aquaman because who cares? And of course I skipped Justice League when it was released because it once again had incredibly poor word of mouth, was by all accounts a massive disappointment and from what I understand put the skids on a lot of Warner Bros.' plans for that universe. So there's my brief history with the DCEU, something I never latched onto and a franchise that I have little to no interest in.
So that brings us to Justice League. I don't see much reason to explain what this movie is about because I'm sure most of you have seen it and even if you haven't, if you've seen the Avengers movies then you've in effect seen Justice League. There really isn't much for me to say that hasn't been said already or isn't perfectly obvious on its face. It's clear as day that Warner Bros. was desperate to catch up to Marvel and decided to skip introductory films for many of its characters that (almost) all the Marvel heroes had and went straight to Justice League. The gamble to not invest in the characters and also not invest in the audience clearly didn't pay off and it's no surprise, it's hard to really latch onto anything happening here. In the Marvel films we're given several films and many years to learn about the Tesseract, the Infinity Stones, the Guardians and Doctor Strange and who Thanos is and finally we get to see everything come to a head over the course of multiple movies. Justice League does all of that in a single movie, only you substitute Infinity Stones with Mother Boxes and you can keep going down the list. It's also worth noting that each Marvel movie clocks in at over two hours on average with some of them reaching 2 1/2 and even 3 hours. Justice League without title and credits comes in around 105 minutes. So that's 105 minutes to introduce us to characters, some of them brand new, bring Superman back to life, give us a hamfisted villain and reveal his plan to, surprise, use the Mother Boxes to destroy the world. If this movie wasn't written in a meeting room with several people in tailored suits drawing on a white board I'd be astonished.
Now all that said, I certainly didn't hate the movie. I'm not saying that I took it seriously because I didn't, it's almost impossible to do so. Instead I just let my guard down and watched a completely predictable movie with stock characters and no ingenuity or creativity all play out. It's everything we've seen before but...I knew that already before going into it. So let's kick our feet up and take it all in. I mean how bad could a movie possibly be if composer Danny Elfman shoehorns the classic Batman theme into random scenes. Some people might have had a problem with that but I didn't, because again who cares? This movie, this franchise is nonsense. The characters were what you would expect and once again they were trying to mimic the chemistry that the Marvel team has only with no success. Aquaman has no depth, Cyborg is a complete waste with equally little characterization and Flash, obviously the comedic relief, falls flat every single time he's on screen. He's basically Justin Long's awkward character from Die Hard 4 only in a red costume. Then they fight Steppenwolf who is pretty invincible until Superman shows up, he beats him in about 90 seconds and that's that. Nothing that's unexpected. But Steppenwolf has an army of Baxter Stockman-esque fly things that feed off fear. We're told that they were drawn to the fear on Earth after Superman's death, okay. World Wars I and II didn't create enough fear? Mao's China? The Khmer Rouge? Nevermind, why ask? It's a flashy, plain Jane movie that stands on the shoulders of giants from another company and while it's not a complete disaster it's nothing memorable either. I suppose it's better than Batman v. Superman in the sense that I don't think I'll delete the entire movie from my memory bank but it's a movie that's still...there.
But what about the DCEU? Like I said I haven't been following new developments but I do read the trades. So Henry Cavill is out as Superman, fine. Ben Affleck is also out as Batman but instead of recasting they're just rebooting with Robert Pattinson in The Batman? And they're also bringing back Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne in another Flash film? Does that mean the DCEU is dead? But what about Wonder Woman 1984 and a likely third film? What about Aquaman? Are they just keeping pieces of the DCEU while writing off others? Is Warner Bros. just shooting from the hip at this point and hoping for the best? Because that's certainly what it seems like. WB should have been thanking Disney and Marvel for giving them a detailed roadmap on how to craft a successful extended universe that fans would deeply invest in. WB thought 'nah, we got this' and did everything just the opposite. It shows and it's sad. Superman and Batman deserve better.

(a title I never really understood, is it 'Batman versus Superman' or 'Batman VEE Superman?' Because I've heard both. And why not just call it 'Dawn of Justice?' Or 'Batman and Superman?' Or literally anything else). It's "Batman Vee Superman" like a Supreme Court case. Not sure why it's like that, but I think that is the correct pronunciation. Well, if a lack of running time is your problem, there's certainly a solution for that on the way. WB thought 'nah, we got this' and did everything just the opposite. It shows and it's sad. Superman and Batman deserve better. It seems like what they're doing is keeping the characters that work and ditching the ones that don't. Aquaman was financially successful so they're probably going to keep doing solo films from that iteration of the character, same with Wonder Woman. They will probably nominally maintain the previous films as canon while allowing there to be other non-canon stuff along the way. Not 100% sure what's going on with that Batman reboot.
