Today is Ultraman Day! And Mill Creek used today to announce its Ultraman releases for the rest of 2021, following their release of Gridman next month, and they are unfortunately DVD only, but the majority of material is in standard def so it's not a huge loss. Gridman is also in standard, which makes its Blu-ray release a bit curious, though apparently Japan has that material upscaled to HD. But a few of its titles announced today also have upscales available, so this is a bit of a "Well...what's the deal?" situation.
But any Ultraman in still Ultraman in the US. As long as they don't revert to beta, I'll be fine.
So the rest of Mill Creek's schedule:
Gridman: The Hyper Agent - August 17
The Ultraman - September 14
Ultraman 80 - September 14
Ultraman Tiga - October 5
Ultraman Dyna - November 2
Ultraman Gaia - December 7
Tiga, Dyna, and Gaia will bring a new mural on the side of the sets, like the original Showa blu-rays.
It's also confirmed that Dyna and Gaia will both have their films included in the sets (unfortunately in SD despite being, you know, real movies), Ultraman Tiga: The Final Odyssey was denied release by Tsuburaya Productions, due to a music licensing issue that somehow complicates international release. Still, it's out there if you want to find it.
It gets added to the list of Ultraman shows and movies that will not be released by Mill Creek due to licensing issues:
The 6 Ultra Brothers vs. the Monster Army
Ultraman USA: The Adventure Begins
Ultra Q: The Movie - Legend of the Stars
Ultraman: Toward the Future
Ultraman: The Ultimate Hero
Ultra Q: Dark Fantasy
Most of which can't be released due to being co-productions and Tsuburaya doesn't own full rights to them. And in the case of 6 Ultra Brothers, it's the film that led to the infamous Tsuburaya/Chaiyo licensing dispute, so, I doubt anybody wants to be negotiating with Chaiyo for it.
What Mill Creek has left beyond what they're released, which will probably equate to seven more box sets:
Ultraman Kids
Ultraman Zearth
Ultraman Zearth 2: Superman Big Battle - Light and Shadow
Ultraman Cosmos (along with three films)
Ultraman Nexus (along with Ultraman: The Next)
Ultraman Max
Ultraman Mebius (along with two films)
Ultraseven X
Additionally to this, there have been three additional shows in Japan since Mill Creek inked this deal: Taiga, Z, and Trigger, as well as the anime series on Netflix based on the manga. Mill Creek does not have deals set for these, but apparently the door is open if they want to license them. I'm hoping they will.
But that's my Ultraman round up on Ultraman Day. He's to the shiney silver guardian!
