Glad to hear it still has the horror elements. It was speculated that Scott Derrickson originally left because he wanted to lean more that direction and Marvel didn't. Kevin Feige recently dismissed those rumors, and if several review tidbits are to be believed, that's definitely not the case. It’s obvious Scott Derrickson left cause it’s a sequel to WandaVision, Loki and No Way Home and he wanted to make a sequel to his 2016 original. Sam Raimi did an interview with Rolling Stone and said the script kept getting rewritten to accommodate the timeline of events. They also did reshoots in late 2021 to make the story clearer cause the original cut of the movie got lost in MCU lore. Raimi wanted a movie that had an A-to-B-to-C story that audiences could follow. He said Kevin Feige gave him creative freedom as long as it didn’t stray from the overall arch of the MCU. Multiverse of Madness was originally supposed to release before No Way Home. Both movies had to be reworked quite a bit. From the GQ Tom Holland interview:

Multiverse of Madness was originally supposed to release before No Way Home. Both movies had to be reworked quite a bit. From the GQ Tom Holland interview: Raimi talked about that in the Rolling Stone interview. The script was constantly in flux. I think Scott Derrickson saw the writing on the wall and dipped. He probably just wanted to make a sequel to his 2016 original and not juggle all these multi-franchise stuff. Raimi himself only agree to direct if it wasn’t a Spider-Man 3 level meddling. Feige assured him creative freedom as long as he stuck to the lore.

We'll see if this pans out. Spider-Man turned out pretty good. Only Kevin Feige could handle such madness. Seeing quotes like "this is very much a Sam Raimi film" and "one of the weirdest Marvel movies yet" certainly has me intrigued. I'm beginning to imagine some of the insanity of the What If? series in live-action form at this point.

Please, please don't neuter Raimi. Just to assure thebtskink: In the first hour of this movie: A giant eye is gouged out. People drown in puddles. Evil Dead zooms on slamming doors. Bruce Campbell punches himself in the face repeatedly. This is a Sam Raimi movie.
