The scene between Xavier and Magneto outside the US Senate chamber always struck me as odd. The hallway in which they're speaking is clearly not the Senate building. I suppose Singer was more interested in giving the scene a visually interesting location.

I've always liked Kamen's score the best of the Singer X-movies. Ottman's is too bombastic and repetitive for me, but I've always liked the way Kamen embraced the sci-fi aspect instead of the superhero.
Henry Jackman's First Class score might be my favorite though.

The first DVD I bought was X-Men, before I had a DVD player. It seemed so ground breaking at the time. X2 is still mostly great though. The thing about that first X-Men movie is that it was probably the first superhero movie that attempted to have dramatic weight without losing sight of the spectacle. Superman movies were fun showcases of superpowers and Batman movies...weren't really about anything (a villain shows up, Batman punches people). Blade was a step in making superhero movies sexier, but that film doesn't really have a strong narrative. I remember being in that theater and thinking to myself "holy crap, this movie has a story!" |
