I haven't watched some of these older Bonds in a while. I watched From Russia with Love during my lunch earlier today. When I was younger I thought it was "good, not great" but now I kinda want to smack younger self and say "it's great, you shit!"
Unwinding after a long day now to The Man with the Golden Gun. I guess we all have one dumb Roger Moore movie we like for some reason. I think this one is mine.

“As strange as it may seem, I’ve grown accustomed to your face.”
“Do you mind if my friend sits this one out? She’s just dead.”
Fucking savage.

I like the small touch of Bond putting on the sunglasses so he doesn’t have to show emotions.

They cut out the James Bond will return part. I want my money back!
Anyway, you can tell this movie was saved in the editing. It was a thick, and sometimes nonsensical, script they had to get through and used the editing to keep the pace up. I’ve heard/read they worked on this movie until the very last minute so I actually wouldn’t mind it getting the George Lucas treatment and tightened the editing a bit more. There’s definitely scenes they could have deleted or re-arranged. Maybe there’s deleted scenes that could be reinstated. A trip to the EON vault for Thunderball would be nice.

Yeah, at the time of release, Thunderball was the worst of the Bond films, but it does work in spite of itself. There's some great stuff in there.

Within the context of 1965, Thunderball might as well been Star Wars. I think the sheer spectacle of it would have left you saying, “it’s at least better than Dr. No.”

Your argument that Thunderball was “weakest upon release” is pretty weak. The movie was clearly groundbreaking in its day.

Adjusted for inflation, Thunderball is the highest grossing movie of the franchise. I think most people today attribute that to how beloved Goldfinger was at the time, but it's true that if people didn't enjoy the film then it probably wouldn't have sold tickets like hotcakes.

It’s remarkable how much Sean Connery aged between 1962 and 1967.

TBS cut out the scene of James Bond being shot out of the submarine. The first time I saw that I was like “what the fuck?” I agree with their decision. Cutting from “I took Oriental in Cambridge” to the billboards in Japan makes more sense. We don’t really need to see how the supposedly deceased Bond resurfaces.

“That’s stirred not shaken?”
“Perfect.”
I once read a theory that Bond is indeed “dead” and the whole movie is his journey through purgatory. lol.
Oh, no. They killed Blofeld.

I would argue this is the best fight in the Connery era, from a choreography standpoint.
