I think $20 is a little more reasonable, allows Dvd\blu-ray purchases. I think the reddit secret santa does a $20 limit, and that seems to work.

So at this point we have 11 people interested:
Jibbs Neverending Seakazoo PhantomKnight sabin26 Nilade Justin equipe Knerys Doomsday FShuttari
My hope is that by end of November we can have the list of participants confirmed to give people some time to buy for others and get the present to them before Christmas.
Will be sending out some PMs to all on the boards here to see if there are more interested.

I'm afraid of buying people something they already have. Can we narrow it down on the list if everyone can name something they want that's 20 dollars or less... like dvds, games, ect...

We should all PM docstop with our addresses, a little wish-list and whether we have a DVD or blu-ray player. Then doc can disseminate all that info to those participating.

One thing about the addresses that I wanted you all to know. As soon as I've got them all and sent them out, they will all be deleted. I will also not be copying them anywhere else, they will stay on the msg system here and then be deleted.I get the importance that Secret Santa stay secret and that everyone's privacy is respected.
I will also not take part unless we have an uneven number of participants at the end.

Doc if we have an uneven number of participants I will buy for you in addition to whoever I get. There's no reason the person who initiated the idea and is doing most of the legwork should be excluded from Secret Santa. If $20 is the most I can spend I will gladly be santa to 2 people.

I normally am all for charity stuff and i dont want to seem like a Grinch when I love giving presents for christmas. I am on a fixed income and can barely buy my own family gifts this year. But your welcome to put me down for next year for a 35.00 dollar gift to make up for missing this years.

I'm afraid of buying people something they already have. Can we narrow it down on the list if everyone can name something they want that's 20 dollars or less... like dvds, games, ect... Well, if we use the Amazon Wish List idea, then those should be made up of stuff people want but don't already own. The prices are also listed underneath each item so you can pick and choose what to get that's in the price range.

I think we should just pick someone we want to shop for and kinda choose from a list of CS members.

Maybe next year when you're actually participating you can offer some input on how you think it should be done.
Secret Santa is you give a gift and you get a gift. You can't just say "I'll buy something next year someone buy me something this year". Picking who you buy for off a list of participating members sort of eliminates the "secret" part of "secret santa"
RE: Not wanting to buy something that someone already has Anyone who has an amazon account can easily create a wishlist specifically for CS! Secret Santa. I'm adding a small handful of items ranging in prices with nothing over $20 so whoever has to buy for me can pick what they want to buy and I still have the element of surprise from not knowing what item on my wishlist will be purchased. If you don't have an amazon account you can create one in under 5 minutes, and amazon exists for people outside the USA, so members in other countries can have an amazon wishlist.

We could make fake accounts on amazon one in usa and one in uk and just order from there, get cheap shipping. I'm assuming it is as easy to make as the US ones are. Canadians get deals all the time on the internet.
I prefer to remain anonymous on this site... so I prob won't partake. Just throwing out ideas.

FT raises a good point.
Otherwise, I'd say shipping is around $10?

I can't remember for certain but I think back on the old boards, Psykooo, had the original idea. Hopefully there will be an odd number and I can partake. Nothing against your amazing suggestions, I'm truly flattered, but to me it would seem like I'm getting something for nothing, if that makes sense. Also, to all currently involved please make an Amazon Wish list and start to compile a list of items you would like Santa to give you.

Why would there be even numbers? Secret Santas don't usually pair up, do they? Then they wouldn't be secret.

Doesn't Amazon ship for free on orders $25 and over? Shoulda made it $25 instead of $20. And like JBond said, even or uneven numbers shouldn't make a difference in Secret Santas.

Nah, they changed it to $35 last year.
We should also set a hard date that the gifts need to be bought by. That way people aren't hitting 'Purchase' on December 23rd with the present getting there 10 days later because of holiday shipping. Maybe we all agree to buy on December 15th or something that way we all get our gifts at roughly the same time.
