Never got though the Silmarillion. Perhaps I will try it on Audio. Audio books are great for epic stories - I read the actual books back when I was a teenager, but I'll admit to skipping quite a bit about the battles. I have the audio collection now though and that is a great way to wade through a lot of those missed parts to get toe whole story

I started Fellowship and tapped out at Tom Bombadil.

You should finish the series. There's a reason it's so popular.

Yeah the songs are a bit tedious but mostly they're there as flavor text. Songs have always been a way to tell tales in and of themselves. Some are relevant, others not.
it's one big reason Tom didn't make it into the movies

I received a $20 giftcard to Barnes and Noble for Christmas, decided to put it toward the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series (first five books).
Still waiting for it to arrive, but I'm excited to jump into it.

I tend not to buy from them in store because they're outrageously overpriced. The same set I purchased from their website at $30, they were selling it for $50. A book about the Chicago Bears I was looking at: $16 in store, $8 online.
It lead to an amusing argument with a store associate who clearly was flustered by my question as to why they don't price-match themselves, and if it leads to frustration that they're losing out on business to themselves. As somebody who used to work for a retail outlet that had/has a very successful online business, it wasn't good for our store for people to leave and then go order the product online. They may as well have ordered it from Amazon or WalMart at that point because we weren't going to see any of that margin. This can't be good for B&N either.

Well, what can you expect from a store that has a huge selection on hand and (in the case of the one here) is partnered with a Starbucks coffee shop. Nice place to read things before you decide to buy, while you drink pretentious over priced coffee

I got a $15 B&N gift card for Christmas and plan to use it in-store. I figure I can find maybe two paperbacks on my Wish List that are $7 or $8 each, and that should mostly cover it. Plus, I just really like going in the store for the atmosphere and the chance to look around; the mix of coffee and book smells is just intoxicating to me.

Watch them raise their online prices now to match. They have to actually pay people to be nice to you in their stores - so I guess that means they don't want to see you in there

Fine by me. After my experience yesterday, B&N will just be a place I kill time in or get ideas to pursue online/elsewhere. Won't spend another dime in store.

lol. I guess it's the convenience of having it right in front of you to grab and take home that they expect you'll pay for. But yeah,I can order it online and wait for stuff too. I'm still waiting for my Cthulhu Balaclava from Amazon by the way They sent it from China I guess by snail driven carriage - last time I cheeked it was in NYC

I still occasionally buy books from B&N; but yeah, they are a little overpriced. Lately I've been buying e-books on Amazon instead though. It's cheaper, quicker, and you have a wide array to choose from all on one device. Plus, if I buy a physical copy, it's usually used. I rarely, if ever, buy them new.

I'm rereading the Silmarillion right now. I'm the only other person I know besides my dad that's survived the Simarillion. Blew through the original Trilogy in less than a month. Then got all my roommates on board when the movie came out.

I've found I mostly buy game books because the PDF files are too hard to reference if you are running an RPG or Miniatures battle game. I usually only buy a physical book now if it is something I really want to have on my bookshelf. Like the very nice bound set of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll.

Years ago I began writing a sequel to Mac and Me titled Big Mac and Me. It didn't get very far. What a shame. Mark McGwire would have been great.

I remember when the Fellowship of the Rings came out in 2001 I wanted to read the Lord of the Rings books. I tried and failed. It was all fields, little hills and woods and fields, little hills and woods. By the mid point of Fellowship I was shouting, "Get on with it!" I was never able to get any further.

I'm rereading the Silmarillion right now. The Silmarillion is sort of the reason I want to read the Rings books. It has all this history that is never tapped in the movies. I want to know it and I want to get my head round the fact that one guy made it all up. I received a $20 giftcard to Barnes and Noble for Christmas, decided to put it toward the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series (first five books). Still waiting for it to arrive, but I'm excited to jump into it. A Song of Fire and Ice is another book I'd like to read but I don't want TV spoilers and there are WAY too many characters for my little brain to get around. But what does Randal know? He thinks it's okay to have a donkey sex show in a fast food joint and not worry about health and safety.

Also there are a few very well done documentary films on the subject as to what life experiences he wrote the book about - very interesting history of the man behind the books Knerys I also know two people who have completed reading The Silmarillion at least once. Surprisingly my friend Terry who doesn't strike me as someone who could wade through it, but nonetheless has read it three times because he loves fantasy. And my brother Pete who is a voracious paperback book reader - in winter he usually sits on top of a mountain all day running a ski lift and manages to go through 2 or three novels every other day or so

The Sil is awesome. It feels very mythological and very much the stuff of legends.

How does that make you depressed? In WW2 nuclear bombs became a reality. This led to the idea that the only way to be safe is to resort to Mutually Assured Destruction. Bring the world to the brink of destruction in order to prevent it. It will not be a great idea to do this same thing with Artificial Intelligence once it begins to do every task humans used to do. A careful strategy to avoid being toppled off the spot of dominant species on earth, needs to become a reality before the hour is too late. Depressing enough for ya?

It was a misunderstanding. I wasn't talking about the contents of the video.
