When Facebook landed and destroyed Myspace its appeal was its exclusivity, only college students could join. Then they opened it up more and more and more and now it's mostly a bunch of baby boomers talking conspiracy theories. MySpace and Facebook imploded. But people our age didn’t necessarily hop on Instagram or TikTok. And I think it’s cause we really have nothing interesting to share the majority of the time. Maybe once a year we’ll take a trip on vacation that’s noteworthy. Or maybe occasionally we’ll attend a reunion. Most of the year we're just going through the grind. Unless you got Baby Yoda money and can effectively start early retirement. There’s an element of that as well. There’s an element of that as well. I remember when social media was a great way to “keep in touch”, but the people that actually care about you will make an effort to remain in contact. Ultimately you realize, “who is this for?” 100%. Social media has done nothing to benefit my current friendships, if anything it's only caused issues at some point or another. Now it's only there to feed me info on people I haven't spoken with in years or girls I used to like and are now married with 3 kids. Hope you enjoy life with your balding lawyer husband! |

On a quasi-related note, one of the highlights of my youth was making up a story for my high school newsletter. A couple times a year they send out a thing to all alumni with the goings-on at the school along with updates from alumni who submit a little blurb, usually where they live, kids they have, how 'great their lives are' and all that crap. A few years after I graduated I sent one in saying that I was a professional fighter in Japan, married to a Japanese woman and running my own dojo. Aaaaand they published it. So much for verification and quality control.
For years, years, people would call my parents congratulating them on their martial artist son, asking to see pictures of me and my Japanese wife, saying 'isn't it incredible how much he's accomplished?' Then my parents would have to tell them that it was all made up, it was all a lie, and the same people would ask 'but...why would they print something that isn't true?' Why indeed. That is my legacy at my high school.
