I'm probably very late to the game on this but I logged onto facebook for the first time in a while. I scrolled my feed a bit, saw nothing but garbage and ads, saw that there were barely any posts from my facebook friends, looked up a few people off the top of my mind, saw they hadn't posted a single thing in months if not years and then thought 'what the hell am I doing here?' and just deactivated my account. Facebook has been on the way out with us older millennials for a while now but I'm trying to weed out the things that waste my time without giving me much satisfaction and facebook/social media in general is high on that list these days. I'm probably very late to the game on this but I logged onto facebook for the first time in a while. I scrolled my feed a bit, saw nothing but garbage and ads, saw that there were barely any posts from my facebook friends, looked up a few people off the top of my mind, saw they hadn't posted a single thing in months if not years and then thought 'what the hell am I doing here?' and just deactivated my account. We all left Facebook the moment our parents joined. That was, like, 15-16 years ago. Remember FarmVille?  This was all pre-Trump. Twitter is as big of a cesspool, I’d argue. We all took MySpace for granted. We owe Tom an apology. Twitter's a cesspool but at least I see tweets I want to see from people I choose to follow. Facebook is a ghost town. All I get are posts from pages that I do not follow trying to harvest hate clicks. Mostly from pro-wrestling pages because wrestling fans are both assholes and very stupid. |

That said, I think we all took for granted how much free time we had in our teens and early twenties. I remember people used to do keg parties and post pictures of it on LiveJournal. Yes. Livejournal. That’s how fucking old I am. Fast-forward to now, I’m halfway through 8 straight shifts at work. Do people our age have time to post anything exciting on Facebook or Instagram? I think social media is a young person’s game. Unless you’re living off Baby Yoda money and wanna show off your riches. |

Facebook has taken over craigslist so that's why I use it. Tons of paw paw trees free fire wood cheremoya fruit for free when they come in.
Grabbed a beater stroller to take on flights (just in case they don't know how to close my uppababy - I ain't risking the Cadillac) this summer and patiently waiting for a free wheel barrow to show up.
Also got some tomato cages for free and a ton of mulch someone bought too much of. And there's some local music and food groups I like to pop in every so often just see what everyone's loving.

When Facebook landed and destroyed Myspace its appeal was its exclusivity, only college students could join. Then they opened it up more and more and more and now it's mostly a bunch of baby boomers talking conspiracy theories. Millennials had alternatives and ran over to Instagram to post pictures and LinkedIn to talk about their 'awesome' careers. Also, maturity probably has something to do with it as well. I have no desire to post pictures of, well, anything going on in my life. I'll text pictures of my kids to my family and friends but otherwise I just want to keep to myself without feeling like I'm 'plugging' my life. People realize that you're ultimately competing with yourself and it doesn't matter what the fuckwit you knew twenty years ago who peaked in high school is doing with his life. |
